3-5 Business Days?

Wow! It says the new MacBook Pro's are shipping in 3-5 business days. What is up with that? I thought they were shipping tomorrow. Should I just wait and go to the Apple Store tomorrow?

If I could vote your post upwards, I would. Well said.

I bet you it sells well ;)

I can understand some people need a matte display, but have those same people used one of the glossy displays in an MBP? I thought I 'needed' one too, but after trying (reluctantly) a glossy display I bought a glossy MBP nearly 2 years ago and would never get a matte now. Sure I'm not a hardcore designer like some of you, but I am launching a web project and need a good screen. I have never been able to use a laptop outside as the light on it makes it impossible to see the screen, I can do just fine with this display though. If you have looked and hate fine, but if you just think you won't like it but have never used one in anger take a look (unless you have a legitimate need for matte rather than just a bit of what you fancy).

Lots of hate for the new machines with people disappointed about the new line up. I wonder if its because they knew it all already? I think this is a big release personally, unless you start from scratch and redesign the laptop I'm not sure what more you could get apart from a feature here or there. And if they DID start again chances are it would not work, there are only so many shapes, sizes and material you can go for, yes it doesn't look totally new, but thats a bit like saying your TV doesn't look very different to the next one, it might have an extra lump or bump but ultimately unless they go obscure for the sake of it there isn't much more they can do. When you have a product that sells well and works well why rip it up and start again? Porsche demonstrate that, the 911 is not exactly a new design, its been around a very long time and simply refreshed over and over.

Personally all I want is a fast machine that does the job well, I don't go for gimmicks and tricks, the trackpad looks good but I think I will most likely not use the different gestures, I have a trackpad that I can do several things on now but I still use it the same way I always did with previous PowerBooks, I do like the idea of glass though as it might be really accurate and easy to use, but thats about it. Bigger hard drives, longer battery life, better graphics, faster processors, thats what does it for me. My brother has a Windows laptop he got last month, its got buttons and knobs all over it, fingerprint recognition for access, media player knobs and switches, but the fingerprint recognition rarely works and he struggles to get into his own machine, the media player takes ages to start up and shuts off often, the display is horrible....

Depends what you want, but some people wouldn't be happy whatever Apple released.

wow, a 2.4 GHz Macbook/4GB ends up around 1700 bucks without applecare. before the 2.4 GHz white macbook/4GB was around 1400 bucks without applecare.

That's around 20% more expensive.

That's why they keep the low end MB in the shop because lots of students will have a problem with that.

The MBP 2.4GHz/4GB will be around $2300.

So much about agressive pricing. I think they designed those notebooks without the economic meltdown in mind.:(

Well, I'm in the lucky situation to be able to afford these notebooks. But I'm very reluctant to throw out money for a beautiful notebook without FW400.

I'll have to look into the competition on the windows (ugh) side first.

I mean electronics should get cheaper over time with more power and features. Not just more stylish.

Bottom line: There are more people who want to use computers as entertainment devices then for creative work. Apple is going with the numbers

to bad apple just doesnt come out and say it though..."hey we are ditching the pro market...no Shake upgrades, no pro suite upgrade/blu ray, etc."

Seriously, your point is well taken...to bad Apple just cant be more forthcoming about their intent. (maybe its just to be greedy, who knows. With a quad processor out there, no reason it cant fit in the space of that 17 laptop.)

Peace

Please think about what you're complaining about.

OK. I've read through most of these posts and I guess I can't believe how much most of you have to complain about. You think you're owed something from Apple - if they don't make the perfect product, they are somehow doing you an injustice. Stop complaining because in month or two, you're going to buy a new machine anyway and deal with it.

Remember, Apple was the first to eliminate big floppies, then little floppies, USB only in iMac, etc. Give them some street cred. So if you're upset, start your own company and compete. Otherwise, stop speaking for the masses, calling people morons and stupid if they buy a certain product. It's offensive and quite honestly immature.

I haven't seen anyone mention the drop of the 1680x1050 option on the display. They kicked it back to 1440x900, which in my opinion is way to big for a 15.4. I'm happy with the glossy displays now, tho.

I wonder how it feels to click and drag on one of those things. Seems like that's a lot of pressure to put on one finger; how can you glide along with the greatest of ease while keeping the trackpad depressed? Doesn't sound like good ergonomics, but maybe there is still a way to click-and-drag with the thumb holding down the "button".

I agree with you about the pricing. $2735 for high end MB + applecare - edu discount. Blew my $2500 budget. Never imagined I'd have to pay so much for it

Considering the previous middle white macbook was $1650 with the edu discount, I didn't expect to pay more than 1800 for something with similar specs.

It's just really not a good thing to have the price as high as it is considering it's apple entry level mac. I can't see many people looking at switching over to mac laptops at a 2k+ entry fee the baseline next gen macbooks. .

Will stick with my old Powerbook until it lasts then switch to PC again. A very sad day. This is just expensive junk and with those horrible glossy displays they screwed them completely. It's not just a matter of being pro (I can hear their pain) or not: glossy displays are extremely annoying and cause strain to the eye.

"...I am a photo professional and I have to say that I am extremely disappointed with Apple's decision to go "glossy only" for their whole display lineup....The glossy screen presents several problems, not only in terms of a headache-inducing, eye-crippling glare, but in terms of colour rendition. In my experience, the saturation of the glossy screens is boosted in such a way that it makes colour editing difficult......"

Exactly! Just two weeks ago, I had to take some stuff home with me that I thought I could work up on my brand new iMac...even though it was calibrated with the same calibration device I use for my Studio monitors, when I loaded the retouched files into my studio machines and looked at them they we ALL waaaaaay too dark and contrasty! So much for using a glossy, high contrast monitor for anything critical.

I just got off the phone with my rep at Fotocare in NYC and he's already had about 30 calls since the announcement wondering what the pro-users options will be in regards to both the new laptops and monitor situation. I can guarantee you one thing...even I have been very happy with Apple's monitors up 'til now I am 98% certain to be buying a much more expensive Eizo retouching monitor in the future!

4 finger gesture

Will current (15" 2.4GHz) Macbook Pros receive a software update to support the new four finger gesture?

I can understand some people need a matte display, but have those same people used one of the glossy displays in an MBP? Web design is one area where a glossy screen would work fine. The problem with glossy is NOT seeing the screen. It is color fidelity. A web designer does not have to worry it the printed product matches the on-screen view because there is no printed product.

The problem with the glossy screen is that it exaggerates color contrast. Consumers like this it make everything look bright and more colorful but people who design for other than the web want "accurate" not "exaggerate".

What's odd to me is that Apple does not even have "accurate" as a build to order, extra price option.

<Senator Vreenak Voice> It's a faaaaake!!!

Really though...

- Unnecessarily blurry, even for a camera phone.
- No apparent click button
- No apparent power button
- Severe 'overbite' on the closed lid photo
- Bad Photoshopping of the card slot and mystery port (as seen in the previously leaked photos)
- Dodgy box (White is normally for MacBooks, but the black handle for MacBook Pros)
- iLife '08 logo on box - There's a possibility of iLife '09 being announced.
- Engadget won't mention their source! Not even 'a trusted source' or 'an anonymous submission'

Any more reasons why it's fake?...

SAY IT: IT'S A FAAAAAAKE!!!

No, you say it: FAAAAIIIILLL!!!

This part of the Q&A really struck a chord with me. To summarize from the keynote:

“Will the new MacBook cannibalize MacBook Pro Sales?”
-”No. Pros buy MacBook Pros.”

“Are you going to offer a matte screen?”
-”No. We’ll offset reflection with more brightness - consumers love it.”

OK, so consumers will love their glossy screen on their MacBook. Good for them. But what about the pros who buy the MacBook Pros as answered in the first question? We are not consumers - we are pros! Don’t give pros the things consumers like in your pro products. That’s why you have two product lines in the first place Apple. Terrible.

Wow... that was a kick in the nuts...

So... No Blu-Ray cause Steve said this :

10:56AM "Blu-ray?"
Steve: "Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It's great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we're waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace."

10:55AM Q: No Blu-ray, and display port -- why no HDMI?
A: Steve: HDMI is limited in resolution.
Phil: for typical computer use, display port is the connector of the future

Hmmm, How interesting!

Especially when you think about the market fro BluRay is booming and there's more than enough Laptops out there with BluRay capabilities... So what is Apple really saying here? That they don't want to put out for SONY... I can't believe what they just said... it's utter and complete BS!

Also, the new Monitor? Made for Laptops? Huh? Since when? I'm sorry but can't a monitor just work for ALL apple products? MUST it be a separate entity?

Also, no mention if the screen is Blu-Ray Compatible at all... The current models are not.

And then the MacBook and MacBook Pro's looking SO much alike is simply retarded. I mean really... it went from, cool to pointless in a hot second.

Apple is all over the place lately... I cannot fathom Apple going with Glossy on a Pro Laptop.

As a photographer I cannot even imagine the painful torment one has to go through to ensure the correct colors etc, not to mention the reflection the screen puts off... I don't care what Steve and Gang says... it's simple logic... it will reflect enough light to make you want to go insane when editing your materials.

Bad call Apple... JUST like that idiotic Accelerometer in the Nano... it is driving me nuts!!!!

Apple keeps making some dumb choices... I am wondering what's going on at Apple HQ!!???

These new macs and displays are bloody ugly, the old aluminium looks much better.
The 'pro' machines now look exactly like the imac, which i'm not to keen on anyway. I really liked the old square functional look to the apple pro stuff and the glossy screeen with the extra bezel around it is to all intents and purposes rubbish for working with Colour.

I think they look kind of nice. The new updates are not enough for me to replace my trusty MacBook right now, but I was certainly tempted.

Big Disappointment.

The cost in the UK for the base MBPro model seems expensive £1400.... thats more than I paid for my MBPro in Feb 2007 !!!!! Thats unbelievable for the entry model. Add some essential ports (FW 400 and display connector, plus an extended warranty).. and Holy Rip Off Batman.

I was ready to upgrade but there is no way now. Mandatory glossy screens on a pro model is a backward step.

Its time to start looking at Lenovo's latest line up I think. I am not tied to OSX, and perhaps apple should remember that before stitching us up with a pathetic update like this one.

What has happened to Apple ?

You are right, Apple owes nothing to no one...but their stock holders.
But aside from that, there are many of us who have been with apple before it was cool with the rest of the world...before the ipod and iphone became their main stay.

So in a sense, yes we feel they owe us something...it was the pro market that kept them afloat, and now its own to the consumer line leaving us who need dedicated hardcore computers in the dust. (with mobility.)

BAck in the days Apple blamed IBM for the slowness, etc.
Now Intel has a quad core for laptops that could fit in a 17inch case and what did we get...no update for the 17inch. (its using the old faulty Nvidia card as well as a slower processor than the 15 inch.)

This is not innovation, but then again, apple has been leaving their pro line (software) lagging as well.

Lenovo, as ugly as the machine is, at least has the inside of what should have been in a machine called macbook(pro).

Lets hope apple straightens this out...or someone pops out of the wood work and gives pros a new option. (like what Red camera is doing for the cinema and soon still photography world.)

Peace

Rip off!!!

The white macbook may be $100 less in the US but here its MORE expensive. The pros have gone up by as much as £150. And on top of that it looks like a bloody DELL! What's going on?:mad::(

January.
And excuse my french, but **** me!
Ive never seen so many people complain!
You dont have to buy them.
First off, that rude language is not French. I hate that ignorant saying.
Secondly, of course we dont have to buy them.. the only problem is they removed the option of us buying. As in matte.

The result is still a lost sale here. Will be looking at getting a great deal on a used MBP.
