Not good for Video Editors

WOW

Why do they call these Macbook Pros?

As a pro video editor I can tell you these things will not do.

There is no Firewire 400? WTF? There is only ONE firewire 800 port instead?

Almost all DV and HDV cameras use Firewire 400!!! yes some of new cameras use P2 or XDCAM instead of tape, but most of us still use firewire 400!

I'm not sure a firewire 400-800 convertor will work, but then your running your camera and external hard drives on the same bus, which sucks for Final Cut Pro, and WILL NOT WORK with Avid.

That means you would need a card with a Firewire 400 port, arghhh!

Glossy screen? wtf?

To get this thing to be pro you would have to buy all types of adapters and mod the **** out of it. Carrying all the extra crap sucks.

please explain

Can someone explain to me how apple sells a 17" laptop that costs $300 more that a new 15" one that has a faster processor, the same ram, same hard drive, a MORE POWERFUL graphics card, an extra graphics card that enhances the improved battery life, a thinner and lighter case, a sturdier case and more access to the hdd for upgrades???

is a matte screen, and extra usb and FW400 port and a higher res worth $300?

perhaps for some i guess.. but this update is just weird

Anyone know if the new MacBook has a removable/replaceable battery? I've been tying to check specs at the Apple Store but it's been down for the past hour or so...

Yes. RAM, HDD, SSD, Battery. More accessible than ever :)

Well, so much for replacing my 1st generation MBP...
I'd meant to replace mine once they got a new graphics chipset (as to avoid the failing chips...thank goodness my ATI card is solid), but suddenly, my MBP sounds pretty good, with its matte screen, FW400, dual-link DVI (without costly adapters needed), and non-chicklet keyboard. I fit squarely in the "prosumer" market, and this prosumer is going to be switching to a Thinkpad :( Sad really; I enjoy OSX more than Windows and Linux, but not enough to compromise this much on hardware, and pay more for the privilege.

Anyone else getting 3-5 days to ship?

Ordered the 15" MBP when the store was up the first time, and got the 3-5 shipping quote (even paid for overnight shipping).

Hoping it's a typo, but managing my expectations that I may not have it in my hands until Monday. :(

I hate to be the one to say it, but these new models look really similar to the Sony laptops that were out about 4 years ago. Except that these are made from metal.

I really think that most of you guys talking badly about the new models should first go to an apple store and check them out for yourself. I'm sure they're much better than you think.

I'm thoroughly impressed. I like the new design and I expect it to be of high quality. I will definitely check them out as soon as I can.

These are consumer machines, not pro machines. Glossy screen? Loss of 60 pixels vertically? A single firewire port?

What a joke. These will bomb. Of course, if you use Apple products, you don't have a choice. You have to buy what they peddle. Sad.

I've been saying that for months with the whole Psystar business and most Apple fanboys about tore me a new one. How SWEET it is to watch it all blow up in your faces now that you can't get what you want period. Too bad I actually need a laptop right now with firewire. I'm thinking Hackintosh isn't a bad idea. It'd half to cost half the price of that MBP and have a MATTE screen. Just remember, Stupid is as Steve does and you'll be OK. ;)

Need some help....

I want to plug my new MB/MBP into my 52" HD LCD.. DVI adapter is a must... Will both of these be able to run on that large a screen.. Playing HD movies and whatnot?

I'm kinda leaning towards the 15" pro... Let me know if the MB should work fine..

I'm not buying and I'm very disappointed ...
I was thinking of changing from PC to MAC, but not like this

No 17" MAC
Glossy screens
Very expensive
No VGA/DVI port. and the adapter is not included.
The trackpad without the bottom will make you clic without wonting to, with the palms

Apple just lost a long time user to MS Windows. My friend has been a long time Apple user and he really needs a new laptop. Long story short, no firewire on the MB means he's about to buy his first ever non-Apple computer.

Apple, what were you thinking?

Blu-Ray

 The thing that really disappoints me about this update is the lack of Blu-ray. I don't care what Steve said about licensing, if Dell can put Blu-Ray in their XPS laptops and keep it affordable, then there's no reason why Apple can't do the same thing.

If they want to continue to keep their products on the high end then they have to do things other than boosting RAM, HDD, and CPU. They need to modernize the WHOLE product, not just pieces of it.

I'm sorry, but someone at Apple screwed this up. I don't care what they say - if, IMO, inferior computer makers can add Blu-ray affordably, then there is no excuse for Apple in not pulling that trigger.

I really wanted to buy the new MBP 15'' ! In fact: I looked forward to it to buy it this week...

But how can I justify paying >2.000 euros for a machine with a glossy screen and not an option to take a traditional matt screen ?

I once bough a glossy 22'' HP screen because in the shop the colours looked so nice. But I seldom use this glossy screen any more and now use my old Philips matt screen which is really a pleasure to the eyes. Is Jobs not using those Macbooks himself 24/7 ?

I can't say I am tempted to buy another laptop brand instead because I really love the OS, but I will stick with my old matt Imac & previous model Macbook (2Gb Ram) until a Matt Macbook gets released, which justifies the upgrade.

O well: Nikon D90 or D300 is something to start thinking of now instead ! More luck next year Apple...

.....The glossy screen presents several problems, not only in terms of a headache-inducing, eye-crippling glare, .....

Sorry but I use a glossy MBP screen, have done for 2 years nearly, and I stare it for a minimum of 50 hours a week, I haven't had a holiday in 2 years either so thats a lot of staring. I don't get headaches or eyestrain or find the glare an issue - there is no glare - so this might just be a problem some people have, it certainly is not a fact that all glossy screens cause these problems.

Some people simply want an upgrade and are annoyed at the display not the graphics card, however there will be loads of the current MBPs around for a while, some nicely discounted. The new machines are not going to leave the old ones for dead and if they are upgrading from a machine of a few years old the step up will be huge.

Sadly if you are waiting for a new graphics card in the 17" the wait goes on, but as annoying as it is its just a computer, some people get a bit carried away, though I'm sure their words are little more than hot air ;)

The problem is that the graphics cards in the 15 and 17 inches were faulty Nvidia cards - which took apple months to admit to. And it seems only extended warranty to within the U.S. (Im sure Hungary wont honour such a warranty.)

So seeing updates and realizing they left the old faulty cards in there is beyond belief to me.

It wasnt about a card, in general, not being updated... as much as it was about a card with known issues not being updated. Macbook pro users have had multiple issues because of this card. (I cant afford the luxury of having such a faulty macbook pro.)

I remember my apple pismo (remember those) had a screen issue out the box and I returned it same day...Hungarys customer service isnt quite the same as in america. ;)
So Apple needs to have these screen issues fixed and machine working out of the box and not leaving in defective cards. :)

Peace

do you know what the best option is for us? (I'm also a video-editor)
I need my FW400, but as you see, there's only !! 1 !! FW800 on the new MBP that I'm going to buy.
Think I need some help!

We have already seen the iMac ugly black border thing.
So to see it on the formerly beautiful MacBook Pro is a shock.

The biggest mistake is no price drop - there is a RECESSION on and Apple might have compromised on price a little more.

What was all that crap about lower price points, lower profits a few months back?
They changed nothing.

If a machine has less ports and now needs an expensive adapter (display), and the price is the SAME, thats actually an INCREASE in price.

Thats crazy.

The reason some of us get upset about these things is because we want to see Apple succeed and always offer the best equipment.

Its a shame to see useful ports disappearing and no optional matte screens for those who like them.

Price isnt a problem at the high end - so offer more and charge more, and most will be happy.

Then there is design - the black border is gimmickry, and Apple should have done a bit more research before deciding on this ugliness.

What does the black border do? Nothing, except make a good product look like a frickin Dell!

Not one of Apple's better days.

Jobs and his team looked a bit miserable - is it possible that Steve Jobs is screwing up?
Is he making design and feature decisions and allowing no real input from others?
There is something wrong at Apple - these new machines show a lack of class and a desire for profit that will not help the company.
Does Jobs still want to 'beat' Bill Gates? What a waste of time that would be.

My conclusion: Something is wrong at Apple.

Whaaaah!

I am a PROFESSIONAL GRAPHIC DESIGNER and I am hopping mad.

I don't actually own a calibrated monitor. Even though I do this photography stuff for a living.

FURTHERMORE...

I do all my editing IN DIRECT FRIKKING SUNLIGHT.

So the GLARE on the new Macbooks Pros is TOTERLLY UNACCEPTIBLE.

(ok enough with the sarcasm)

But honestly, I work professionally with images, and consequently I own a 30" display and do that work in a darkened room. That's what the job requires.

My requirements for portables is different. And I think for most consumers, this new package is very sweet indeed.

Plus the fact that the 17" is all cheeseball compared to the 15" maybe they can listen to us cry and on the 17" add firewire 400 and use the 800 along with matte screen. :(
