Lose: FW 400, Matte Option
Swap: DVI for Mini DisplayPort, Current Overall Design for New Overall Design
Same: Price
Gain: ?

You gain better graphics and a multi-touch glass pad. You lose more money paying for an adapter for the new DVI port and a FW400 adapter. Apparently, Apple's new big profit margin items are adapters for non-standard ports. :D

You WILL buy them too because you have NO OTHER CHOICE in Mac HARDWARE. How do you feel about rooting for Apple against Psystar now? Still think Apple's hardware competes with Dell, etc., when they aren't allowed to install OS X? If you want OS X, you have to pay the piper. I've been saying it for months. Get used to it because it's what you all asked for. Steve rules your world and you love it and you love him and you will pay anything to stay with Apple and everything Steve does is good. He is your master. Welcome to the Dark Side.

"...Really all some third party needs to do is develop an anti-glare film for the new MB and MBP. Done deal. Stop complaining....."

With answers like this, it's no wonder wikipedia is so popular!

It's not just the glare that's the problem...the glossy monitor has much higher contrast that even after calibration (because Mac monitors have NO contrast controls) make it pretty much useless for high-end photo retouching. Ya know what...forget that I said 'high-end photo retouching'.....even if you plan to take the digital files of your kids playing in the backyard to a Wal-Mart for printing, if you've done any work on them on a glossy screen, they're gonna be DARK!

Case closed...no argument...game over!

I'm still wondering what happened to Hybrid SLI, will this feature still be possible? Or do I just have two graphic card but I am really just switching between them. If it is the latter, what a waste of hardware! From what I know, the 9600M GT is a terrible graphic card.

Sorry but I use a glossy MBP screen, have done for 2 years nearly, and I stare it for a minimum of 50 hours a week, I haven't had a holiday in 2 years either so thats a lot of staring. I don't get headaches or eyestrain or find the glare an issue - there is no glare - so this might just be a problem some people have, it certainly is not a fact that all glossy screens cause these problems.

we are not the same...I can tell you that it does bother me.
I will say that yes, it is pretty, but the glare bothers me. (and it does others)
There should be an option, thats all.

Im sure you would appreciate it if you were one of the people it bothered. ;)

Peace

do you know what the best option is for us? (I'm also a video-editor)
I need my FW400, but as you see, there's only !! 1 !! FW800 on the new MBP that I'm going to buy.
Think I need some help!

I'd like to know what you video guys are considering as alternate options instead of the MacBook Pro. I'm a graphic designer, I don't do video editing, but I do love my FW 400 connection for target mode and I hate this glossy display nonsense. So what kind of machines are you considering? If they don't change the MacBook Pros in the next year or so, when I'm ready to buy a new one, I'd consider switching to a PC.

First off, get over yourself...a little sarcasm on an online forum is hardly gonna cause the Earth's rotation to slow down! I doubt any Apple engineers have taken out an order of protection against me...

I didn't realise Americans did sarcasm ;) And I agree, I doubt any of them were scared!

But secondly, yes, unfortunately as a professional photographer you are kinda forced into buying the next best thing that Apple puts out simply because every single piece of digital everything is designed first & foremost...FOR A MAC! So if I wanna keep using the newest software and work effectively, I hafta buy a Mac! And let's not forget that all of my clients also work almost exclusively on Mac systems, so being able to have everything Mac-centric helps a lot...

I do agree with you and more than anything, to be honest, you want to have the newest toys don't you! However if you are using the machine in a studio would you not have a top level pro display hooked up to your machine anyway? I don't see why Apple would force people to buy glossy, I wonder if the material being glass causes an issue and is harder to make matte?

17 inch still with antiglare option...

So, the next laptop HAS to be the 17 inch? *sigh*

This is the time to start whining to Apple directly. How does one get in touch with Apple efficiently, make the requests count somehow?

Petition anyone?

I've an iMac 20" as backup, but I don't know it's that evident to load-in my vids from my camera on m iMac, and transfer them to my new MBP.
I really gotta find a better solution.
Is there a trustable FW800 to FW400 adapter or something of that kind?

The white macbook may be $100 less in the US but here its MORE expensive. The pros have gone up by as much as £150. And on top of that it looks like a bloody DELL! What's going on?:mad::(

Air is more expensive in UK store now as well :(. I suppose it's because of current exchange rate (technically speaking they were setting new prices, not adjusting old ones). A pity it's in the worst possible moment (i.e. when dollar recovered a bit).

WOW

Why do they call these Macbook Pros?

As a pro video editor I can tell you these things will not do.

There is no Firewire 400? WTF? There is only ONE firewire 800 port instead?

Almost all DV and HDV cameras use Firewire 400!!! yes some of new cameras use P2 or XDCAM instead of tape, but most of us still use firewire 400!

I'm not sure a firewire 400-800 convertor will work, but then your running your camera and external hard drives on the same bus, which sucks for Final Cut Pro, and WILL NOT WORK with Avid.

That means you would need a card with a Firewire 400 port, arghhh!

Glossy screen? wtf?

To get this thing to be pro you would have to buy all types of adapters and mod the **** out of it. Carrying all the extra crap sucks.

I am in the same boat as you.

Apple are seemingly dumping the pro users. Add these "consumerish" mac updates (removal of FW400 ports, glossy screen, dropping standard DVI connector), to the lack of updates in the pro apps and lack of attention to detail... it all stacks up to bye bye pro users.

The problem with having these proprietary connectors is they are exactly just that. You need to carry a plethora of adapters with you, and god forbid you forget one and you need to do a presentation from your laptop to a DVI/VGA based projector.

Very poor.

Plus the fact that the 17" is all cheeseball compared to the 15" maybe they can listen to us cry and on the 17" add firewire 400 and use the 800 along with matte screen. :(

They have to hear me cry, I just will not buy.

These are great consumer laptops, they just suck for pros.

I guess the rumors about apple dropping their pro apps are true?

well some of us use mac software. OSX works great for an editor or graphic artist. I need to stick with mac even though at work we use both platforms (pc & mac). Expose hotspots alone can be my cause for not switching.

How exactly would you make glass matte? Isn't smooth and fully transparent glass always glossy?

I really wanted to buy the new MBP 15'' ! In fact: I looked forward to it to buy it this week...

But how can I justify paying >2.000 euros for a machine with a glossy screen and not an option to take a traditional matt screen ?

I once bough a glossy 22'' HP screen because in the shop the colours looked so nice. But I seldom use this glossy screen any more and now use my old Philips matt screen which is really a pleasure to the eyes. Is Jobs not using those Macbooks himself 24/7 ?

I can't say I am tempted to buy another laptop brand instead because I really love the OS, but I will stick with my old matt Imac & previous model Macbook (2Gb Ram) until a Matt Macbook gets released, which justifies the upgrade.

O well: Nikon D90 or D300 is something to start thinking of now instead ! More luck next year Apple...

Seriously, close the curtains or whatever is causing you such eye pain. Glossy really isn't that hard. I really don't get the issue. I whined about it when glossy first burst forth, and I went Matte, then for my next one I thought I'd chance glossy. It's fine. What reflections? Stop shining torches at it or whatever lunacy you're engaged in.

good question...Im asking the same thing from myself with the lack of updates of Apples pro line. I have worked with Final Cut ever since Apple acquired it from Macromedia and DVD Pro from Spruce (if I remember it correctly).

There are some viable pc options out there...the only thing apple has going for it now is case design. Lack of features like a quad processor in a 17 laptops...like I mentioned, apple used to blame IBM when they could not keep up...whats the excuse now when Intel has the chips?

Anyway...I have to wait and reconsider quite a bit of things.
Apple has some for awhile cornered due to their investment in software, etc.

But if they dont pick up, they will loose a market they once were strong in.
Its an irony to be sure how things are turning out. Apple the iphone consumer market.

Hmmm...time for me to buy a company or two and put together a revolution in computing and software for pros. (Ill take first dib at acquiring all of Autoedesk products and go from there.) ;)

Peace

No FW 400 is a bad move - as someone has pointed out you capture from the camera on the FW400 directly TO a FW800 drive.

And things have got crazy expensive in the UK for the entry level Macbook.

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out but I expect to see price cuts very soon.

I don't like the black border. I wouldn't mind them dropping the 2nd firewire port if they gave us eSata, but alas no. And glossy screen only, ick!

Jury is still out for me on the chicklet keyboard and glass trackpad.

On the positive side, finally a user serviceable hdd.

Overall, absolutely no desire to update my SR 2.4ghz mbp...
