people need to calm down, its like the "fat" nano..people hated it in pictures until they held it in their hands...thats when they fell in love with it.
this, i think, will be the same.
and glossy is seriously not that big of a deal...i've sat with my glossy mac in the sun...i know its a huge hassle for us fatass americans to move 180* to adjust our positions. :p

LOL

You kept them afloat, the same dude who goes on random sites bashing Apple, what do they own you, they don't own you jack.

I am not saying they "owe" me anything, I am saying I do not like the way they're headed, and I certainly don't like your argumentation that a) they SHOULD cater to the lowest common denominator, and if they don't but ALSO cater to people like me, they would "go broke".
And, no, this is not a "random" site. It's a site I frequent often. I'm sorry if you consider my arguments "bashing" of Apple – you truly sound like a full fledged fanboy, liking that big stick up your rear while your front is pulled by rusty tweezers.

Consumers are driven by fad, for the most part. At some point they'll fade or go towards the next fad and Apple will have to fall back on their core pro market to survive.

Unless they chase all their pro customers off first, of course.

no they will just invent the next fad for people to follow they will go with the flow or create it.

Giving the MacBook Air decent graphics, migrating to fast DDR3, and upping the storage capacity and drives to SATA is the biggest laptop news today. Shame it only got one minute.

MacBook - overpriced for consumers, underfeatured for pros, but as a device it is quite lovely. Shame the CPU speeds didn't improve. I think that for $1099 it would have been a far nicer deal.

MacBook Pro - overpriced, but a lovely device.

No new Mac Mini - may arrive with the iMac update in November if it happens.

I expect that they will still sell a tonne though, enough to be very successful. It's not for me, but I don't think I need a full laptop these days which is probably why I"m not so hot on today's news.

I do also think it is good that someone will go and make something properly, even if it costs more.

alright.. i get it now.. :) thanks for that.. but the current design is still a little hold back.. :( maybe i will just wait for the next revision with snow leopard.. just another few months i assume.. :p

I wouldn't assume that they will redesign it that soon. It took them five years to change it to this:rolleyes:.

Don

For those in the market for the new MBP and 24" LED screen... might be better off getting the 24" iMac. If portability isn't your thing... that would be the way to go... they look almost identical!

Kind of tempting actually... but I'm holding off for a Mac Pro. Hopefully Apple doesn't disappoint come January... :(

Its hard to separate MacBook from MacBook Pro now... I guess anyone (even junior high kids) can own a MacBook Pro nowadays solely for 3-way iChat sessions and Limewire downloading.

ahem
£69.00 for the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter...

why'd they look the same and a bit like this?

the new mac pro?

Yes, the fat nano lasted a year. :D

At least they kept the 16:10 screens.

Impressive designs

I just watched the QT broadcast of Steve's presentation. It was a bit lackluster compared to his typical baited-breath excitement when unveiling a new product. A lot of this is transitional.

Before people freak out too much about the bumped 17", remember that Apple has unveiled new tech in the 15" then followed up later with the 17". We'll see a redesign for the 17" in a month or two, I wager.

Also, the new 17" will somehow be outfitted with an "anti-glare" screen. Perhaps a post production scuffing of the glossy screen, with a glossy patch left intact over the camera lens.

MacBooks = consumers only
MacBook Pro 15" = higher end consumers, business professionals
MacBok Pro 17" = graphic designers, film/video editors, "must-have-the-best" consumers and business professionals.

That consumer matrix would make sense to me.

The real puzzler is the loss of FW400 on the MacBook. I thought maybe the rumors of FW over Cat-5 would account for this and still allow amateur videographers and musicians to use FW cameras and peripherals with a MacBook. This is more of a boneheaded move than the "glossy screen" issue, which can be easily fixed without a huge case redesign.

The overall case redesign is great, though. While the black bezel looks a bit chinsy compared to the slim aluminum bezel on my MPB, it will look great when playing movies, which a LOT of people do.

I'm sure there's room in there somewhere right?? Personally I'd prefer a FW port over a kensington lock any day but that's just me...

My thoughts exactly!

oh...ok :) i think apple is better than ikea...we have to remember that microsoft is the lowest common denominator...and we can never stoop so low:cool::apple:

Well, Apple has surpassed MS in some ways.

Yes we are fanboys, lame azz argument, get something better to come up with.

LOL, I did. But the only thing you could come up with was some fanboy reply that basically said "if you don't like what's offered, piss off! Apple is always right".
I described what I saw.

But I'm not thrilled.

Macbook Pro is a great machine, beautifully crafted and an engineering masterpiece. But....

-They have not updated processor speeds. Where is X9100 BTO option?
-They have not updated hard drive space. There are 500GB 2.5 SATA 3Gbps drives now, BTO?
-No matte display, but that is not much of a big problem for me. But many people are upset.
-You put mini DisplayPort, that very exciting, but you charge for adapters?? 99 USD for Dual Link DVI-I adapter? We didn't needed an adapter with the old MBP, why do we have to pay to connect our displays to our new MBP?

Oh Apple, you give us great things and yet take some good old stuff away from us at the same time.

It would also be nice if they supported a higher memory configuration as well. I will be keeping my current MBP!

Remember the intel transistion when the MBP ditched the modem and the fw800 port on the 15"? Alot of bitching then too. I bet no one misses the modem anymore, but I bet enough people are going to bitch about the fw400 port to bring it back on the MB and possibly even the MBP. Send feedback to apple!

Yeah cause that product stood the test of time :p

I agree with you for the most part, but I disagree on one fundamental issue:

I DO think that Apple owes the professionals that served as their core market for ages and ages something - a bit of consideration, and at least the friggin' option - even if it's expensive - to get our machines configured the way we need them in order to work effectively. All of us that have invested in OS X as a software platform, and followed the pied piper down the yellow brick road into macland, have done so as a calculated decision, and voted with our dollars. When what we've voted for turns around and snubs us, we've got every right to be angry.

They have a monopoly on OS X hardware, and to act irresponsibly towards a large segment of your market in that circumstance is beyond shooting yourself in the foot - it's the beginnings of cutting your own legs out from under you.

You simply can't be the best by catering to the lowest common denominator, and failing to maintain your high-end.

Not really - 17" is a bit of an edge-case machine. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the 15" is the sweet spot in terms of compromise between screen real-estate and portability - a lot of us with 15" MBPs have a Mac Pro at work in the studio, and don't need the girth of the 17 incher, so it makes sense to include all options on the 15".

my thoughts:

-only glossy screen: i hate it too, but i'm sure there'll be 3rd party product that can put a skin/sticker over it to remedy this.

-loss of FW400: one can do FW over Ethernet, or use the Express slot. FW800 is backwards compatible. plus, both 800 and 400 are on the same bus anyway, no reason to bottleneck them 2 together at the same time.

-black bezel & black plastic keyboard: it would be real cool if they came out with the darker aluminum color (a la iMac) for the whole MBP, with the same material for the keys. this will make the black bezel look less "2-toned" and have that same cool, sleek look Mac's are known for.

-no CPU increase: wait till Snow Leopard comes out, NVIDIA 9600M GT can be used for that extra performance boost.

otherwise, all the updates looks great!

OK! apple, for the love of GOD, pls make a 12" mbp.
intel Quad, BR drive, esata, HDMI, FW400,800, 4USB.
MATT SCREEN. i don't care they r air thin or not.
Mono tone pls, silver or Black.
I'll pay whatever price u charge me.

Video production gets shut out

ENOUGH!!!!

This is a horrible update for “pro” users and no matter how you feel about the screen, then firewire, or anything else, one thing you should know as a “pro” is that what works for you, doesn’t work for others. The lack of options in this lineup is the biggest problem. Just because a glossy screen works for you and your work situation, does not mean it will work for someone else with different needs in another situation. Great, so firewire 800 is back compatible with 400. But some people need more than 1 port! Oh the express adapter, yea, well some people need more that 2 ports! In the old configuration you could get 3 ports that where all stable and no need to daisy chain, which doesn’t work with HD video (or SD even). Hell just a simple focus group with Final Cut Pro users would have told Apple, that they all use it differently. They all have different needs, and setups. We should give them the flexibility to do what works best for them. But that’s not where Apple seems headed. With this update Apple seems to be saying, “we’ll tell you what your workflow will be, and how you get there, oh and that will be determined by what we think will sell in the consumer market”.

coming in october for certain.

think iphone w/ a keyboard. silver on the outside, black on the inside.

new monitors, too. think big iphones...

sorry, i should clarify. the *look* of the pro is going to look more like the iphone. all glass, smooth front like the iphone. and with a black keyboard like the Air.

the monitors will have the look of the 3G, too. smooth curves.

They won't put glass in the MBP. The glare would be ridiculous. Matte is so much better.

told ya so, told ya so. (posted Sept 11)

I still hate the fat nano and am glad they went back to the old design of the nano. As for the case of matte v. glossy reflection and glare are not the only issues.

But they are a growing company and they need to develop for their new demographics which are consumers, I'm sorry but the pro users are getting smaller and smaller for them.

Well, I guess I disagree with myself, now that you put it like that –*that's how I feel they've acted.

You simply can't be the best by catering to the lowest common denominator, and failing to maintain your high-end.

Nope, you're right, that's part of my argument.

Although, I already voiced my worry when the FW was ditched on the iPods. People were laughing at me for voicing my concern that Apple seems to have had switched focus.

Then came the first MBP were they ditched the FW800. People laughed again, but enough bitched about it, apparently, because it returned.

Then came the MBA, I voiced the opinion that this was further "proof" that Apple had finally gone all consumer/lowest denominator mad.

And now these "upgrades".

Seriously, I'm glad I have been migrating for a long time to make myself somewhat platform independent. This way I will have an option when this pitting, flexing and buggy MBP dies. Even if I can't make it into a hackintosh running buggy leopard. At least I'll have the option of installing that iTunes-store-advert called "iTunes" on it :(
