I noticed the pro comes with both the 9400M and the 9600GT and you can switch between them, but have they incorporated SLI so they can be used together. This would definitely aid games performance.

Question. Is anyone (besides me) happy with the updates? I suppose I'm your "average joe" in terms of what I do with my computer, but even so?

I am. I do not mind the glossy only displays on the MacBook Pro (Anti-glare film can fix it) and I hardly use the FireWire on the MacBook (Aluminium iMac does the job ;)).

You'll never accidentally click it while moving your fingers around the trackpad to navigate across your computer. It's resistant enough to not click while you're using it for tracking, but easy enough to click while deliberately clicking.

That better be true, since I don't know how I can use a trackpad otherwise ("Tap to click" doesn't work for me).

The entire trackpad gives tactile feedback when clicking, so when you use your thumb to click anywhere in the bottom half of the trackpad, it clicks just like a button would. (In fact, the top part of the trackpad clicks too, but barely).
Reminds me of my hp 49g+'s keys. I guess this will be an easy transition. :D

That's absolute bull, if a company doesn't meet my needs, I move onto someone else who does, I don't go around wishing that they fail, but I see how fickle consumers are.

If I was fickle, I wouldn't be sitting around griping on a Mac board about how the new models have cannibalized their own usefulness in exchange for a lot of 'ooOoOoOoh... ShiIIiiiny....'

My needs involve OS X, which means I can't move on to another hardware vendor, and would prefer not to - I rather hope that they DO fix the problems so I can give them my money.

You do realize that companies design products for the end user, right? I think we ultimately get a say in what those products are via our pocketbooks. I don't hope that Apple fails at all - to the contrary, I hope that decreased sales on the new models acts as a wakeup call that helps them improve their products so that they can ultimately succeed in meeting the needs of their users (which translates into continued financial success on the other end).

You hope their sales are hurt, that's a tad selfish I would say.

People hoped HP sales would suffer, in order to regain quality.

They have suffered significantly, fired much of their board and CEO, then they started producing higher quality products.

The investment is beginning to pay off.

Apple's grand experiment with these laptops I hope goes sour to send a message that these "directions" are mixed, at best.

you guys are forgetting about factory referb. They are just as good and a lot cheaper. As for the macbook pros what are the difference between the two models besides just hd and memory?

Exactly! Well said.

Overall interesting update. I wouldn't say that I am disappointed, because I am still fine with my MBP I got back in January of '07. Overall though, I think I will wait until the next revision before I even consider upgrading.

First off I really think the MBP is a bit ugly. While the black bezel helps offset the ugly black keyboard in my opinion, it still just doesn't go with the aluminum casing (but that's just me). Plus, with the lack of the trackpad button, the lack of the silver latch on the front and the visible IR receiver, I think the laptop just looks way too simple! I think Apple's ideas of simple designs is nice, but now they are just taking it a bit too far for my liking. After all, if I spend $1999 for a laptop I'd like it to look at least a little bit expensive. ;)

The price is the next problem I have with it. It just seems too expensive for what you are getting. When I bought my MBP, I did so because I felt there was nothing else even close to it, and thus I was willing to fork over $2,000. Now, I think that many PC manufacturers have begun to close the gap. There are many more PC products out there that are beginning to look appealing. I still think Apple's laptops are better, but it seems like they would want to make it a bit more competitive. And going further, I'm not sure I'd even buy the MBP. The MB, being much cheaper, has the same look to it, basically the same features, just a bit less performance. Frankly if I had to buy an Apple laptop tomorrow I'd go with that and just save some cash.

Also a bit confused why they left the white MacBook and 17 inch MBP with their old design, but oh well. Overall I'd have to say that this isn't really better, its just different (maybe even worse).

Either Ivy and Jobs are closet Oakland Raider fans or they just really dig that cheaper look. I would have preferred a much darker gray to contrast with the black.

Selfish? no Im not going to gain anything.

I hope they get a wake up call about increasing prices when the market has steadily been decreasing its prices, and on the eve of a major recession if not something else - they bring out an overpriced product with the same or less features!

If anyone is being out of control selfish, its Apple.

Personally, I think these new MB Pros are great machines, OK, so they don't have speed bumps, but they are more efficient than the previous generation, larger hard disk, better touch pad etc for around ( Cdn ) the same price.

The glossy screen is a downer, however.

Is it? Are we supposed to have generous and altruistic feelings towards a company that's ceased embracing our needs?

I don't think so - voting with dollars is the only thing that affects the decisions of corporations, so I too hope that their sales reflect the anger around here today so that they fix the problems, and earn our f'n business, instead of simply assuming it.

nicely said

Let me spell it out one more time for anyone that's confused why we don't get refurbs and shut up:

THE. 8600. SERIES. GRAPHICS. CARDS. ARE. DEFECTIVE. AND. FAIL. A. LOT.

This is the only reason I don't go out a last-model MBP right this second. (In fact, it's the only reason I didn't buy one a month ago, and instead waited impatiently for today's big downer).

So, Apple is going to keep 13" Plastic MacBook and 17" MacBook Pro and someday in the future discontinue them for good?

Or
Will Apple would update the 17" MacBook Pro at MacWorld 2009?
3.0GHz processor, Dual FireWire 800s and Dual Hard Drives anyone?

OK! apple, for the love of GOD, pls make a 12" mbp.
intel Quad, BR drive, esata, HDMI, FW400,800, 4USB.
MATT SCREEN. i don't care they r air thin or not.
Mono tone pls, silver or Black.
Don't forget about ExpressCard slot, backlit keyboard, LED backlight.
And what's up with the FireWire?
Just lowly 800?

What the hell are you smoking? More efficient? The Manufacturing process is more efficient. The computer system efficiency is predicated on the User and the Operating System.

Removing FW from the Macbook makes them far less efficient for the iPhoto/iMovie/iLife consumer.

Sorry, but you don't tout this iLife crap and then cripple the consumer who actually use the suite.

The Pros are using Final Cut Studio.

Screen - Liberal sprinkling of dust, or the use of sand/glass paper :)

As earlier posts have noted - options and price. The screen surround may grow on me.

How much do Apple save by not offering matte?

Date for Rev B?

Cheers,
OW

Even if apple neglect you graphic designer, I wont ;-)

The after market anti-glare screens are not 100% the same as a matte screen from the factory. In addition to possible dust or dirt trapped under during installation, they can cause distortions. In my experience, they are also not as effective at reducing glare as an original matte screen.

I use a anti-glare on my iPhone and it works well enough. But for 15 inches? I doubt it'd be as acceptable.

I also think the new MBP is ugly. I really don't like the black border. Strangely the Macbook does look better than the Macbook Pro. Ill wait to see them in person though.

I agree that Mac has become even less competitive now. In this way, I hope sales go down (although that Macbook might sell well) to make them start offering more value for $$$. I was considering a MBP but not now. And as enjoyable as OS X is, its not worth the feeling that I am getting ripped off.

I thought Macs would be more reasonably priced given current economic market but they have gone more luxury direction. Really strange decision

Lets see how they respond to less sales when the recession/depression takes hold.

What about the dodgy graphics cards in the old (since today) macbook pro's?
