USB 2.0 is currently faster than FW400 on paper, but there's a darned good reason that most of the audio interfaces produced in the last 7 years have been designed for FW instead - USB never lived up to it, and has a way higher incidence of dropped signals, clicking, popping, buffer underruns, and a host of other issues that royally screw up real-time audio recording and low-latency multitracking with virtual instruments and signal processing.

Audio interfaces require a lot of data throughput. Firewire 400 is faster than USB2.0 for these types of applications. USB's 480Mb/s is only its burst speed. Firewire's 400Mb/s is constant.

I never seen an "OS die" - elaborate please.

Vista SP1 DVD - that has the OS loop on boot up MS introduced as part of the upgrade to SP1 - once in a while during boot up I go into a loop that can't be broken. Thus reinstall.

The 6 reinstallation in a year suggests it's A) you are trying to save money on hiring someone to do things professionally because you obviously have little or no clue what are you doing or B) you suffer from some never-heard hw failure rate which, again, points to A)... I work for a small consulting firm and spend 95% of my time on the road and use my own hardware. When at home the nearest computer shop is an hour away. It is not cheap it is a time issue. I'm tired of wasting time on my current laptop, supporting my home PC and wife's work laptop. Every week it is either something small or large. I want a laptop that is stable and I don't need to waste time on google finding a fix.

I am sorry but what type of "professional that relies upon a computer for my income" you can be without a regular backup, let alone who doesn't even have a backup plan minutes before he has to present something to 30 people (e.g. a ghosted image to restore, in less than 30 mins)? I have my data backed every couple of hours over the internet, in this meeting I grabbed a laptop from one of my teammates.

I hate Vista, I agree and really like OS X - however there are many very annoying things in OS X as well.
If Windows then stick with XP - you can still get XP x64 if you need to use 32GB RAM like we do...

everyone MAC user I know, don't have the stability problems users of MS OS's experience. I'm ready to drink the kool aid :)

MB sales up, MBP sales down

I just can't get over how identical the newest MacBook Pros and MacBooks look. Aesthetically, I bet there are going to be a ton (but not all, obviously) of MBP owners migrating to the new MB instead of staying with the Pro.

For sure, since very few of the "Starbucks Posers" need the features in the MBP - but want the "aluminum bling" to attract chicks and dudes.

Even my 77 year old mother-in-law bought the MBP because she "didn't like the plastic one". Pro - not.

But I think the most interesting is the decision not to redesign the 17 inch, but keep it on the market with refreshed internals.
I just think they have been concentrating their efforts on the far more popular 15" model, in order to get this out fast. Nothing new there... it's the same as when they switched to Intel chips, right?

Also, maybe they're keeping options open for the creative crowd, and / or people who find the glossy screen really unbearable. They're basically forcing them to get the more expensive 17" model. Clever selling tactics actually, ain't it? :D

And if there's a really high demand for the matte 17", they could always bring back a matte option for the 15". Nothing's set in stone...

WHy would it be anymore difficult than the smaller 13" and 15", I mean the new Brick process is revolutionary, the 17" just gives them more space to fit the components right?
"the new Brick process is revolutionary"? lol It's just a notebook like any other notebook.

Read the thread history - old line had dodgy graphics cards. That's why a pile of us were waiting for updates.

I understand that. However, the consensus seems to point that the faulty graphics cards were stored, packaged and shipped wrong, which led to them dying.

Apple has since begun offering a 2 year repair plan should a problem arise. And, since Apple had to make changes to their line to incorporate the new internals, they wouldn't risk future profit margins with any more unneeded repairs.

Considering that the problem is not as widespread as forums make it appear to be (I've had an affected MBP for almost a year and have had no problems...), I think it's a safe bet to buy a new 17 incher.

Actually, the process itself is not revolutionary. Far from it, actually. The fact that is is being used for notebook computers is though.

And trust me, my relatively new MBA was just run over by a car and the only thing to get damaged was the top of the screen. These things are built like tanks.

I have a question, will Harddrives that fit into the last macbooks and macbook pros be able to fit into these ones as well? I ruined my last laptop but the hard drive still worked and I just wanted the people at the apple store to swap them out when I buy them.

if they dont thats no big deal, I just wanted to know ahead of time.

If only I had your confidence, I'd have a nice matte-screen last-gen MBP *sigh*

Unfortunately, given that nVidia put aside $200,000,000 (yep - two hundred million) to deal with warranty claims, I'm going to have to assume that it is as widespread as it sounds. Apparently it's a bad plastic compound, not a shipping and delivery problem. On top of the long thread on the apple support forums bemoaning the problem, I have a friend with an HP machine that currently has his machine with an 8600 gpu that required a warranty replacement of the motherboard. This issue is highly corroborated, and isn't your typical 'some notebooks are bound to fail' scenario, sadly.

De facto what? Movie & TV industry is still based on Avid as far as I know - el cheapo little places and rent-by-the-hour stables standardize on FCP.
Let me guess: small post firms, mostly about editing, right? Not much high-end compositing or finishing or any fx work, right? (I don't mention animation and 3D because OS X is out of question for those type of activities, hah.)

BTW "producing HD content" is nothing high-end in 2008, sorry.

They are ever-present, yes but so far they are still rather low-key editing-only IMO.

Don't even try to tell me you worked for a TV studio and you guys were Mac-based - that's not a even a joke, quite frankly.

PS: see my earlier post about complete lack of MAc/OS X in the high-end.

Sorry but I love Avid too. It was the second edit system I ever loved, after the Grass Valley liner room. But Final Cut is enormously popular, even for lager post houses. I don’t know anyone installing Avid’s now. And that does include some networks, and houses with money. Sure Avid is still the largest system used in film studios, and large networks. But less and less production is coming from those.

Apple Eduation Discount..

I see Apple "quietly" changed the Apple Education discount pricing. Instead of getting $200 off of the Macbook Pro, you only get $100 off. And the Macbook you only get $49.00 off. Pretty slimy in my opinion.

Why is Apple so greedy for money? That is the question.

Refurbs are gonna be selling like hot cakes now

I would agree EXCEPT that everyone who would be considered potential candidates to purchase the refurbs are now aware that the graphics chips are faulty. So now photo and video editors have a choice - a faulty laptop or a worthless (=cannot be calibrated) laptop.

Any idea what CPU models are in the new MB and MBP? Why the hell doesn't Apple note this anywhere on their site?

Is that USB 3 speed sustained? Because quoted USB2.0 speeds (480Mb/s) are just burst speeds. Firewire is a sustained speed, therefore when transferring large quantities, it works out to be considerably faster.

Actually, both are peak ("burst") speeds.

The 1394 protocols are better, though, at having "average" speeds that are closer to the peak speeds.

Be upset at your currency but not Apple. Apple waiting for new models to adjust prices - that's how they've been doing it as long as I can remember.

Here's the problem I have with that... For years, the USD has been TANKING, it's only worth 50% of what it was 10 years ago. Did that ever result in Apple price cuts in my currency? No, they stayed the same as before the dollar decline. Recently the $ has recovered a tiny bit, and suddenly this warrants jacking up the prices? So... If it drops to 10% of today's value, then goes back up to 100%, I should expect a 900% price raise?
