Well in the U.K. I knew they were going to raise the price of the new MBP with M2 Pro chips, but I was more worried they would raise the prices of macs across the board like they did with the iPads. Thankfully the M2 MBA has stayed the same price at £1249, as that’s what I’ve been eyeing for a while.

Apple today announced the next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with faster M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, up to 96GB of RAM, an upgraded HDMI 2.1 port with support for an 8K external display, faster Wi-Fi 6E, and other new features.
Glad to see Apple providing quicker than expected M2 Pro/Max SoC updates for the 14"/16" so early in 2023.

just because you can afford it doesn't mean you should lol, if you are not gunning for 96gb ram, get the previous m1 gen at discount, this update is more or less a stop gag before m3 3nm comes out with REAL improvements
I'm not buying one of these! I have an M1 MacBook Pro that will last for years to come.

The problem is, that would be stuck using Windows. If that software was available on Linux, I might think about it.
I have to put in a plug for Windows. It's really good. It works well and with WSL2, has the benefit of near-native Linux within it. I'm a scientist. Most of my work was done on Macs years ago -- Linux was always an option but it's not often worth the hassle, especially on a mobile workstation. However, with Linux on Windows, I've almost completely switched to Windows for local work and a Linux cluster for the heavy computation. I still use Mac a lot for when I'm on the go and I prefer macOS to Windows but Windows has come a long way, especially now with WSL.

A very, very incremental update.

No new features that I can actually benefit from (no 8K displays in my place, no Wi-Fi 6E too), so my 14" base M1 Pro (got it with a discount) is not in danger at all.
All the good features (4K 120hertz HDMI and Wifi 6E) were withheld from your M1 Pro Macbook. Worse battery life too.

We thank you for being the beta tester for these though.

We are something like 98% Mac on the desktop, 2% Linux. We are 100% Linux on the server side.

Doesn't matter because these are much better than the M1 Macbooks in every way. More powerful chip, doesn't have outdated standards anymore (Wifi 6E and HDMI 2.1), longer battery life, more upgrade options.
for the same price sure, but with the massive discount everyone got? hardly. much better? na, barely incremental at best. just like m1 to m2 on the mba.

There is little Pro about the Mac now. I am seriously confused what market they are trying to reach anymore. You start looking at GPU benchmarks and the M2 is seriously underpowered. I don't care about power consumption. When you are paying top dollar, you want top performance. Why would anyone doing professional graphics work look at Apple anymore. There is such a huge divide in performance for dollar. They painted themselves in a corner with this entire shared memory concept. How do you even branch to an eGPU with their SoC architecture? perhaps this is why the Mac Pro is taking so long. they invented some other new chip? I don't know.. but for my money.. I am not buying a Mac any time soon.

You don't have any of those things "right now", but who's to say in a few years that those are all the new standard? I cancelled the order I made last week in order to upgrade to the M2. Considering I keep my MBP's for 8-10 years, these upgrades are excellent and future proof me for longer. To each their own I guess.

What an utter rip off in the UK, you would have to be a complete buffoon to buy one over an M1 version now.

Apple are out of their freaking minds, pure greed and I hope it comes back to bite them.

More and more I wonder if its truly worth it anymore, thankfully Europe isn't Apple obsessed like the US.
Unfortunately, the exchange rates have not been kind to the UK£ vs the USD$ over the last year. Similar for the Euro.

we thank you for being a hold out, and paying msrp for a bare incremental improvement 😂
It's the same price. I just cancelled my order from last week, built the same computer, 16" with M2 Max, 32gb memory and 2TB SSD. Came out to the same price, which is now $200 less than it was last week?

everyone and their mother has gotten a steep discount from bestbuy, walmart and amazon, i landed a 14inch 64gb m1 max msrp for over 4k usd from micro center for only 2500.

That's a thought, but I don't really like selling my old hardware, gotta pack it up and ship it and then whoever buys it might return it for whatever... :(

Mine's a Studio Max with 64G RAM, and 1TB SSD...
Leaving so much money on the table for Apple by doing a trade-in. It's just disgusting how low their trade-in value is. For about one hour of work to pack it up and drop it off. Returns are maybe 2-3% of time if that.. Low risk of return as long as you describe it correctly (any faults, issues, etc). People don't have a problem even buying non working units on there as long as they know what they are buying.

I know Apple wants a closed ecosystem as much as possible but we should at least attempt to bypass the middle man when it's easy to do so.. Hell, you can make someone's day and give them a disgustingly good deal on a computer and still make out WAY better than you would with an Apple trade-in!

I know, I'm thinking 2030 is the year I'll be in the market for a new laptop! Apple finally solved the heat and noise issues which was always my biggest complaints with laptops.

I will wait for the third generation of the inevitable N1 RISC-V processors due to release in 2028 (with built-in ChatGPT)!

I am with you. You can sell it eBay without accepting returns, but it hurts your odds of selling.

I just go to a used computer buyer and let them deal with the return, shipping, and other headaches. That frees my time for things I enjoy and/or at which I can make more money.
