I don't want to upgrade. I stopped using Facebook, I don't 'do' MySpace, I couldn't care less about sharing anything with anyone (apart from a bit of moaning here, on Macrumors).

Dude, it's an opt-in service. If you want, you can just NOT activate it. Chill out! ;)

From the looks of it, Ping will only be useful for those who purchase the top 10 garbage on the iTunes store.

No. See you got it all wrong?!

Ping, if correctly set up, will show the top 10 garbage of your friends and artists YOU follow. So it's up to you to if that garbage is actually "useful"!

Ping is potentially the single most significant innovation to advance the promotion of recorded music since radio.

 You should have put this at the beginning of your post - would have spared me some time spent reading the rest of it.

If anyone else doesn't know how to turn it off, I found it here. Not really obvious, is it...?

I have it turned off because I never signed up for it yet it still appears in iTunes in a few places. I wish having it off would stop it from appearing in the left pane just below store and on the top right. That's what I thought turning ping off would do.

Hehe....you've got waaay too much confidence in Apple. Sorry, but this is going to flop big time. You cant release such a limiting social network to so many people at once. It doesn't matter if they improve on it. The damage is done when people first log on, find its got nothing (content/feature wise) and close it, never to be opened again.

C'mon guys, face facts - Apple screwed up and will now have another failure to add to their portfolio.

It's crap, period.

Edit: oh, and 1 million users....thats bugger all! Facebook has 500 million and MySpace has 12 million.

These numbers of yours aren't comparable. This is 1 million users within 48 hours, whereas Facebook has attained 500 million throughout the span of its existence.

And you're focusing too much on the "social network" aspect. More than anything, it's a service that allows you to see what your friends are up to, musically. People will continue to use it, as it's built into iTunes. Once more people sign up and once more features are released, it'll be worth while and popular. Just wait; nothing new is ever perfect.

Yes, Apple have managed to demonstrate that game-changing products don't need to be, apparently, over, and over and over ...

Fixed.

There is ONE company driving us forward, like it or not - "perfect" first-gen product or not: Apple.

Apple isn't afraid to take the kinds of risks everyone else can't stomach or doesn't have the vision to.

iPhone, iPad, etc.

I'm sure in the future Apple is going to add some really cool stuff to Ping, but right now, it is pretty useless. And the whole Lady Gaga presentation kind of ruined for me. They should have chosen someone like Coldplay or U2!!!

One of the great things about social networking is that the community itself really defines the space. Companies do not predetermine what the network will look like, they provide tools and people run with it. Ping is pretty bare bones but updating it is only a matter of software updates. I say give it a year before declaring it a complete failure. I will most likely be sticking to last.fm for now, however.

I have no use for Ping, it's a dime a dozen in the online social networking circle.

However, I do love the Coleman camping gear commercial. "The original social networking site." Camp fires. Brilliant.

Was hopeful

I was hopeful for ping but am pretty disappointed with it. There just is not anything to do. I don't want to follow artists. I want to follow my siblings and have them follow me for our new music. But besides liking a new song it does almost nothing. How do I make activity for them to even follow. It seems like a glorified fan site setup through iTunes. I don't need that. Too bad. iTunes 10 was not worth that with the ugliness and all.

I just don't get it. There seems to be no easy way to find people or have them find me, so I'm not connected with anyone. Without some sort of connection to facebook or searching your entire address book I don't see this getting used much.

No way I see for artists to easily start posting officially.

And I don't even see a way to post anything myself - isn't there some way to do reviews or highlight songs/albums or something? I can see where an artist did that but can't do it myself.

Oh, and that new iTunes icon DOES look like clip art.

I don't care who does like or not. what is important? it's me. I like Ping even though I'm never interested in facebook crap. as far as music is concerned, it's ok for me.

Its gonna be an awesome service, but all MY artists need to sign up.

August Burns Red, Between The Buried and Me, Meshuggah, Oh Sleeper, All Shall Perish, Animals As Leaders, As I Lay Dying, Attack Attack, Devil Wears Prada, The Ghost Inside, Miss May I, After The Burial, Tool, and Veil Of Maya....

WHERE ARE YOU GUYS???
