It's not about lack of polish or ease-of-use. It's simply a recent example at Apple of strategic user-hostility serving the industry and Apple foremost and the user later.

It's painfully obvious that they've spent far too much time thinking about sales, and not enough time on how to surprise and delight actual music listeners (which would actually lead to higher sales)

As someone on another forum said so well, this is the kind of stuff we Apple users pay Apple extra money to avoid.

Then sell your Mac on eBay and move to another platform!

How is it wrong?

The iPod was an instant success because it was the smallest and easiest device to hold over 1000 songs, not to mention the user interface trumped all other mp3 players, and during the first year it was exclusive to Mac users. Windows users started finding software hacks to get iPods to work on Windows and that following year Apple opened up the iPod to run on Windows through iTunes. Apple saw an opportunity to make more money since the Windows crowd was so interested in getting an iPod. Does that sound like it was a failure from the start like that ignorant post that I quoted?

XPlay - good times :)

Of course it wrecked my iPod every now and then, and I'd have to find someone with a Mac to restore it.

Very well said.

They left out the double e after the P

Or the iss.... your own personal choice, something Jobs rarely allows, so definitely be grateful and make full use of it.

Can't wait for the new Apple innovations... they're top secret, but the name has leaked out. It's called "Download."

And then there's "Whois", "Traceroute", and my personal favorite, "FINGER", which illustrates Jobs' creativity and opinion of his audience in one apt term.

:apple:

I like this! :D

This could be great, a Last.fm killer. It isn't yet -- not even anywhere close. But I'll give Apple some time before I call it dead in the water. Doesn't seem quite as useless as Google's "Buzz," at least.

I have a feeling Ping is going to be the next Google Wave :apple:

Or the next Spotify/Twitter/Facebook/Myspace etc (but for music), or whatever social network is popular, but with more banners and adverts.
Yipee, thanks Apple for being so innovative and coming up with new ideas

Join the Social!

I dunno...this whole Ping thing reminds me too much of the Zune 'Social'...(btw: how's that been workin' out lately for MS?)

But I guess we will see...

Can I access ping from my iPhone? If not, why not?

I signed up but can I do anything on my phone?
Sorry is this was answered earlier, but yes. Go to the iTunes app, there is a "Ping" button at the bottom.

It shows you your feed. And if you search for an artist, and find the artist page, you can follow that artist.

Not everyone seems to be totally searchable (in iTunes or on the phone), but I'd imagine it will get better. Apple probably has to get an agreement with the artist or record label before they can go too far.

Yeah I was surprised to find the Ping button in iTunes on my iPhone today. I thought it was going to require 4.1 to use, but nope there it was!

Sadly, the iPad will require 4.x for it to gain access to it from the looks of it.

Probably...I read somewhere Steve actually admitted it was just catch-up to all the other services.

Just copped iTunes 10. Not happy with the gray icons. Harder to differentiate quickly. And ping? No way. Asked to use my real name. That will never happen on any site. I have a job.

It doesn't ask for your real name at all - it asks you to provide a name.

I thought Apple users were supposed to be intelligent. Just use a pseudonym/nickname of some sort. YES, it does allow you to do this. It says so very clearly in the instructions.

So now up to 37 artists to follow after three days. So it's trebled in three days. I'd imagine this time next week there will be over 100, then in a very short time over 1000.

It does need to see my iTunes library, not just my purchases (but I can see the privacy brigade would be up in arms about that) but I can see a lot of potential.

Once Facebook and Apple sort out their issues and integrate this, it's going to grow exponentially.

Oh and all that FUD about the "spam" attacks - what little spam I saw is now gone - can Facebook say the same?

And for those who have activated, didn't read the instructions and thought you had to use your real name, or thought you HAD to add a credit card or thought you HAD to activate it, judged it after a couple of hours on launch week and then cancelled - well, yr simply idiots. Well done for giving something a chance - you obviously don't remember the early days of myspace or facebook.

It also says that it will change your name on your account to whatever you type in. The good news is that you can type whatever you want, then go into your iTunes store account and change it back to your real name so your credit card still works.

Update: Actually I just tested it and it looks like they changed it so it is directly linked. Bummer :(

Nope, you did something wrong - itunes payment account name is not linked to PING user name. Enter your ping user name, it leaves your credit card details alone. It will put your ping name against your old reviews however.

I am doing nothing wrong, you should double check your account by relogging into it. It does indeed change your store account name. It even says so in the fine print when you change your profile's name.

The name you enter is also the name associated with your account's billing information.

Trust me I double checked it like 5 times because I could have sworn it didn't change it. What happens sometimes is you change your profile name, and it's still logged into the page for billing info. What you need to do is have it re-login to the page with your billing info. It will then show that the name changed to the one in your Ping profile.
