Keep in mind that this was a developer event. Not a commercial. Not a media presentation. Not a new product release. A DEVELOPER event.

Yes, I know that WWDC has become a media spectacle, but at it's core it's a meeting of developers, and should stay true to that fact. They are there to train developers, and to evangelize them as to why they need to develop for Apple, instead of the competition.

If you can tell a developer (who has paid to be there) that it's easier to develop for you because your latest release products have a much higher adoption rate than the products that are competing for their development resources, then you should. If you can tell a developer that your product is growing in certain markets over the competition then you should.

Apple is not just selling gee whiz features to developers. They're selling the draw of their platform, and potential for revenue.

I understand, and I partially agree with you.

Still, in an age where there are cameras everywhere—and in an event that Apple itself was broadcasting the keynote worldwide (I watched it in real time right here, in Brazil)—there is no such thing as an event disconnected from marketing consequences. Especially in Apple's case.

Also, the same message could have been conveyed to all the developers in attendance, but away from the scrutiny of the Internet at large: all it would take is for Apple to spread it throughout the event and throughout the week, in the several presentations that will offered. I like Jobs' assertion that "For Apple to win, Microsoft doesn't have to lose". It's quite a powerful notion, and a very true one, too.

Also, ignoring your opponents in key moments always sends a more potent message than acknowledging them.

Oh, and also there's that old P. T. Barnum quote, "as long as they spell my name right", testifying that there's a lot to be gained both by Microsoft and by Google (mentioned through Android) because they were both mentioned by name in an Apple event.

When I see other companies bashing Apple, the first thought that comes to my mind is: "you have to be pretty afraid of Apple in order to mention their name in YOUR spot". Thats what people keen to Microsoft and Android are left thinking, I bet, after they see those pie charts.

Netflix actually added support for HTML5 a while ago. However it's currently only supported in IE11. You see when they say "advanced", what they mean is DRM encrypted. Something the content providers have stipulated, and which most HTML5 browsers do not currently support.

Nontheless, it's great that Mac users will no longer need silver*****

The only thing that I'm really scared of are the minimum specs. Yes sure you install Yosemite on a 7 year old Mac but I think there will be a huge catch for older hardware.

I'm really wondering how the continuity will be working from a technical point of view. My best guess at this moment: Bluetooth 4.0. That will leave a huge installed base out in the cold. But maybe I am wrong. I can't find any small print on Apple's site so who knows...

Oh oh here come's the hardware catch... What is your system?

2013 13" macbook air and and iPhone 5s 16 gb

Can anyone confirm continuity (calls, SMS, documents) is working on older machines (pre Bluetooth 4.0) too?

Mmm that sounds ok spec wise. Maybe not all is working yet but from a hardware point of view you should be golden.

The new Spotlight allows users to not only search through their computer, but online through sources like Wikipedia, Yelp and for live movie times.

Didn't Sherlock do that about 15 years ago? Anyone could essentially build their own plug-in to have their web site searched directly from Sherlock.

You can do partitions. I made one already for it.

Or use a separate mac.

But don't ever install something like this on your main machine.

If you have only 1 mac, I wouldn't install it at all.

It's still early days for yosemite, so even developers need to be careful about it.

Things can go badly wrong with new stuff like this. Always make a backup before installing a developer preview. This is so important, I wish they would have said this at the keynote (especially for new developers who might not yet have seen things go awry with this sort of stuff).

A vmware or parallels virtual machine would be nice, but given the major problems parallels have had recently (even with the public release of 10.9.3), I think I'll stay with a partition for now until yosemite compatibility issues (and mavericks ones for that matter) are sorted out for virtual machines.

Thanks a bunch. A partition sounds good...just have to clear a little space, and spend $99. I've GOT to learn programming for these things. There's so much I want to do. I've been close to comprehension for a while, but then they come out with a new version and all of the my books and weblinks become useless! And now it's a new language! :)

I think the Trash icon in the dock looks silly next to the other 'flat' icons, as it still has some semblance of depth, being viewed from slightly above, as it is.

Not that I actually like this 'flat' phase. Used to be that a button indicated that you could interact with it by looking like something you could interact with - namely a button! Whoa! How intuitive?!

The iCloud (cough) drop box feature is cool but I guess MS wont support it with their iPad Office

Wow, it looks really amazing. Check this:

http://www.apple.com/osx/preview/ (there are three subpages in top right corner).

eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww just saw the new dock in one of the photos on here... I HATE it. I left iOS because I hate iOS 7's look. So they better damn well let me change that hideous dock a bit. Also do not like the new folders, so in your face bright! And not too sure about the three dots at the top.

But regardless I want to see the features the didn't talk about, great to see they will support my Mac with it too.

To be honest I really love the look. iOS 7 I really needed to get used to but this looks just right. It's nothing too radical but really fresh nonetheless.

Hello!!!! so good news!! seems like a step in the good direction, with the base of 10.9 below. nice.

Now, where have you guys downloaded this? ;-)

I wanna give it a brand new ssd partition to test it A.S.A.P.

Yosemite has ground my system to a hault... soooo buggy!!

To be honest though i did an upgrade instead of a clean install..

About to do a clean install now!

'Oh no, something different. How will I live? I need to be keep the same stale UI for the rest of my life in order to be happy.'

I have an eye condition, the translucency bothers me.

I need more defined shapes.

Didn't Apple get over transparency years ago? They focused so much on in this wwdc.

Yosemite looks like a blend of iOS 7 and Vista :/

Has anyone that signed up for that 1 million open beta thingy received their email for downloading Yosemite?

When do the beta program testers get it?

Has anyone that signed up for that 1 million open beta thingy received their email for downloading Yosemite?

Probably Mid-Summer (July-August frame)

Edit: I wouldn't install Yosemite 'til like beta 4... If you install Yosemite now = bad experience of Mac OSX software.. Let the Devs / Apple iron out some of the big bugs first .... Consumers aren't supposedly to have early Beta software - Because it'll give Bad experiences to the user..

Dark Mode and old style iTunes icon and skin

Can anyone answer me a couple of questions please.

1) How do you enable Dark mode ?

2) Somehow I have got the old style iTunes icon and skin ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

^This. I am not liking it at all. The windows title bars and such are so light, combined with the transparency, they negatively impair productivity. The dock is bugging me and the icons are awful. Moreover, functionality hasn't really improved. Contacts is still the same, which needs a complete overhaul, Mission Control is an even bigger waste of space (I can't imagine these features on a laptop, on my dual 27" displays it's horrendous), the default folder icon looks like something out of Windows 3.1, and "Mail" is still updating 30+ minutes later. (running it on a new Mac Pro 8-Core with D700 dual 6GB FirePro's)

It feels and looks so unpolished. I'm hoping UI reports remedy this as development continues. What shocks me, Final Cut Pro, Motion and Compressor don't work with the first release. With all these advancements, you'd believe Apple would want developers in the pro industry to give some feedback. Time will tell.

For those who aren't developers, of course do not install this release. Many app's do not work, many more than any other OS X beta release.
