Hazaaaa, I just joined the public beta program......, now to find a spare drive to install the thing to..... maybe it's time for a larger SSD...?

also i really want to know how much traffic is going through that site atm and what their peak bandwidth is...

500MB/s, 1GB/s .... more?

Very excited about this new version! So many awesome features that fully integrate OSX desktops with iOS devices FINALLY. They seem to have addressed a lot of complaints about sharing data, music, apps, etc. over various devices, and even with devices of other family members with Family Share. As long as it all works as advertised, this will be a fantastic version of OSX.

The Public Beta is only open to the first million people to sign up and you can sign up now.

The site is currently being thrashed.

yep, i managed to get through though... just let it load and be patient....

but you a re totally right, is it ever being trashed.... its amazing!

Really like the new design. They made it iOS like without getting rid of the Mac feel. They could have easily gone overboard and ended with something horrible based on some of the concepts I saw.

For me though, the game changer was the iOS/Mac integration. Being able to answer and make phone calls and text messages right from the computer. That's super convenient when you're on your computer and someone calls or messages, you don't need to go over to your phone. You can just do everything right from there. It's one of those things that seems so obvious and natural that I wonder why it didn't happen sooner. Same with the automatic hotspot and all the other little things like handoff. Just makes so much more sense now to use an iphone if you have a Mac. And I say that as someone who was just about committed to switching to Android this year. Given the above, and the announcement of swype keyboards and larger iphones, I think I will stick with Apple.

BTW, has Apple said anything about compatibility for 10.10? I'm running a 2009 MBP that runs 10.9 just fine. Do I have anything to worry about here?

Not so fast in heaping appraisal there is plenty that can go wrong.

What a negative nelly you are. How about we take a different tack, where if something does go wrong, instead of claiming some sort of victory (e.g. "I knew they'd screw it up"), we take it as an opportunity to help them get it right, assuming we like the features announced today.

If I get the mac beta can I make phone calls & non iMessage text with an iphone running ios 7

Or do both devices have to be on the new betas ios8 & Yosemite ?
In order to make phone calls from the mac

If those are the specs I'm thrilled, my Mid 2007 iMac I thought wouldn't get last year's software update (before they announced it), and now it looks like it'll get Yosemite too?? How cool is that, a 7 year old machine (which still runs a treat, btw!) is going to get the latest software, damn that was a great purchase all those years ago!

The key is keeping the mail storage low. I just delete all unnecessary emails. That saves GB's of free space.

----------

I wonder if they started writing parts of OS X using Swift already.

I find that a lot of my storage is taken up by 1) backups and 2) Pixelmator files.

The new look will take some time to get used to. Most of the UI looks good. Prefer the dock look on Mavericks though.

Oh, and also I hope that all the UI redesign doesn't bog down my computer.

Great to see excitement and positivity in these forums again. Yosemite looks gorgeous and from a pure software ecosystem standpoint, Apple hit a grand slam today by filling in a TON of iCloud related gaps that existed when using a Mac and iOS devices.

Combine this with a bigger screen iPhone in September and I'm not sure the competition has any legs left to stand on.

Airdrop from new MBP to old iMac?

Does anyone know if Airdrop will now be able to connect older Macs with their newer counterparts? I still use an iMac purchased in 2008, but Apple wouldn't run Airdrop on it. At the time Airdrop was first released, I was using a 2009 MacBook Pro, and now a 2013 rMBP, and I would really like to be able to seamlessly connect with all those files on my iMac.

Finder Icon

Watch out for the Finder icon. It seemed to show a bit goofy during the keynote but online at the website it appears as just a more saturated version of the current icon? But wait my eyes don't deceive me, on the page for xCode 6 the Goofy Finder interloper appears.

https://developer.apple.com/xcode/

Overall it looks a major change in the UI and time will tell. IOS 7 was a change from earlier versions and on close inspection introduced some very interesting and powerful UX features. I feel the transparency should be toned down a bit in areas where underlapping layers distort key areas of content, especially where text needs to be read.

Even in Lion there are instances where this effects legibility: sometimes on modal sheets and the pop-up dictionary definitions. In fact some of the dynamic text/Text kit technology of IOS could be but to good use in Mac OS X, and hopefully this will be the case with Yosemite.

I think a little bit of desaturation on some of the UI elements, and the Finder folder icons need a bit more work. Overall a slight toning back to the look of Mavericks should do it.

Great thing that there is a Beta program inviting feedback, so depending on you beta testers to give good feedback. I my self will not be participating, because current conditions keep me on 10.7.5 on my trusty Mac Pro 1.1.

Revert to traditional Finder Icon please. We don't want the Windows users having a laugh or I will have to hide my future Macs from their mirth and that will be lost opportunity for Apple to advertise their wares to potential new users. Pull back a bit from the Fisher Price look, maintain some of the gravitas of the more recent OS X releases (Lion/Mavericks) sans the Skeumorphism.

Amazing update

It was time for an update! It looks amazing!
Can't wait to download it! :apple::)
