I don't know why people are so surprised, I will say it again, many factors have made this happen unlike other releases:

1: 17 months since the last one came out, that is a massive wait, people are not eligible for early upgrades/upgrades, many people's contracts have probably expired etc.

2: new countries are getting the phone on the 1st day, unlike previous times, wasn't the iPhone 4 only released the USA the 1st month or something? The countries such as the uk, australia etc were able to pre-order/buy them?

3: Many people have been waiting for years on just a 3g/3gs, new features have come, many people will not want to wait about 16 months for the 5 to come out, so they are only now jumping ship.

This iPhone will be successful, no doubt about it, But i reckon the average joe who has an iPhone 4, and doesn't even know the difference in terms of performance, will not get the latest one.

I mean, 90% of people probably don't even think the phone is different.

Watch them blow it with the iPhone5 that is smaller and has a tapperd design...

I think the current size / weight / and form factor is 100% SPOT ON !!!

they could extend the screen to the edges but that's about it...

I love the current design....

I think changing the screen size makes life harder on developers who then need to make changes to their apps. With a retina iPad in the works already keeping the iPhone screen consistent just makes more sense. - just a thought.

Horrible. Not only did Apple's stock plummet after the announcement, but they completely dropped the ball with this flop of a incremental upgrade. the Nexus Prime, this weeks iPhone killer, will destroy this record...

I posted somewhere else that since Apple sold 20 million iPhones in the last quarter, more than 220,000 a day every day including weekends, a million wasn't actually that much. What I forgot was that iPhone 4 sales are of course a lot less than iPhone sales, because a lot of those 20 million were iPhone 3GS. And I'd think that Apple sold quite a few iPhones during this pre-order time; no reason not to buy an iPhone 3GS if you wanted one, or an iPhone 4 at a reduced price.

Has anyone seen sales numbers for iPhone 4 (not for all iPhones) to do a proper comparison?

Wednesday morning I sold my iPhone so I needed a new phone to use until friday. I figured I would give the galaxy sII a week and a held try out. I went to the att store and the sales man told me they got them in on sunday and I was the first person to buy one. Also after a few days with it I can say IOS is much superior to android. I can't wait to have an iPhone back in my hands.

I agree with you... I personaly am fine with the current screen size, but that seems to be the major complaint of people who try to match up iphone with an android type phone.

i will pick the iPhone every time..

Wonder how many droids sold that day!?

Not just how many droids sold, but how many in *that* market segment? Most droids sold are cheap ass phones running antique or bastardized versions of Android.

e.g. I just bought my daughter a $100 Samsung with Android 2.1. It's nice, but not in the same league as iPhones or Samsung Galaxy S II. But I bet they sell squillions of them.

Android fans love to talk up their numbers, but just how many of those droids are direct competitors of the iPhone? It's like saying netbooks must be better than MacPros coz they sell more.

No, these were the countries that got the iPhone 4 on release last year:

US, France, Germany, UK, Japan

Australia and Canada have been added to those countries for the iPhone 4S

Amazing!!

Wow! I typically don't get into the Android vs. Apple thing but as someone who develops and launches new products this is truly amazing. Even the Apple haters have to admit no other phone has even come close to these numbers in 24 hours.

Wow the 4S did better than the 4?? I knew the 4S would still sell but not as much as the 4.

A lot of people skipped the 4 and have been waiting for a new iPhone before upgrading.

something us MR fanboys forgot-makes me regret being determined not to buy a 4S-still difficult to justify full priced new phone, sigh...

I'll speak for myself here and postulate a hypothesis...

While many of you iPhone 4 owners were bitching like spoiled children about the 4S, a multitude (will perhaps MILTITUDE) of people like me were wetting ourselves over the 4S... why?

Because we're 3G/3GS owners, and when the iPhone 4 came out and immediately ran into antenna problems we all said "nah **** that, I'll wait for them to sort that BS out on the next phone"... which is what they just did!

I for one love the iPhone 4 design and now it's actually a very, very good phone, I (and a boat load of other people) are grabbing them like hot cakes...

No need to be surprised, as many here have mentioned in other threads, the MR demographic is not entirely representative of humankind; many of us didn't jump on the (slightly) flawed iPhone 4 when it came out. We're jumping in now though and (like Steve) are sitting back with what can only be described as a big ****-eatin' grin on our faces!

I know there are a bunch of people around here who hate the truth... but I reckon 3G/3GS owners are a big part of it.

:D

I really want to know where those things were said

Here, MSNBC, Techcrunch, Gizmodo, Foxnews, CNN, etc. Everyone had a parade of forum trolls that did nothing but bash the iPhone 4S, and some of the outlets actually angled the articles to talk about how the general consumer was completely underwhelmed by the device, and how Apple had given competitors a "huge opening," how Steve not giving the keynote killed consumer interest, and more nonsense. Turns out, as usual, they were full of it.

I am all for a bigger screen, but not 4". I think they could stretch the screen to the edges (3.7-.8) and reduce PPI a bit. No impact on devs and it's still above the "retina" classification for PPI.

So I just called AT&T Premier Service to cancel a preorder I placed on Friday (I also placed one trough Apple). The recording that plays when you first calls talks about the iPhone 4S. It says that right now they expect orders to ship in 21 to 28 days. I'm assuming that this is for orders placed NOW.

I think many people confuse some of the opinions of the 4s. I think many people had no doubt whatsoever that the phone would sell well. First of all - 50 percent of iPhone owners own a 3GS or earlier model. Add to that - Sprint is now a carrier in the US.

The issue was never whether or not it was going to sell - most would agree it would and sell well. The "issue" many people had was that the new phone just wasn't all that exciting - or as exciting as it could be based on what was/is possible.

These things aren't necc. related at all. And sure - someone will chime in that clearly monumental sales must mean people are "excited." And I would argue that excitement over owning/getting a new phone is not the same as excitement over the specs. At least for those with the iPhone 4.

What WILL be curious - is how many people upgraded (staying with the same carrier) from iPhone 4 to 4s at launch.

I was one that upgraded from 4 to 4S

Sold or shipped? oh sorry, that's RIM

Well done Apple. Let's make this a week to remember for all the right reasons.

Ah, can you show me example on those siotes saying that iPhone 4S sales will be a flop, that Nexus Prime will sell more, that Apple stock will plummet?

You forgot the most important factor: this is the first iPhone announcement in the U.S. where Sprint and Verizon were on board.

But, ultimately, it doesn't matter. More iPhones sold is more iPhones period. Good for Apple.

Very impressive indeed. I too am glad the form factor of the 4 was maintained. It's a great shape, feels substantial to hold, has the right proportions and will hopefully allow existing iP4 case makers to use their current molds - which will drive accessory sales faster.

As far as what the Android fans will say, who cares? Android is an operating system, not an ecosystem - at least today. I do question how companies like HTC and Samsung generated such fierce brand loyalty when they just haven't produced other brand-leading products? It's easy to see with a company like Apple, but really, with a company like HTC or Samsung, what is it that makes someone dis Apple and wholly support one of the Android running smartphones - especially when you give them names like Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch.

Samsung just doesn't get naming conventions - what will they call their next version - Samsung Galaxy S III Epic 5G Touch II?

Well that's ironic - since 9 times out of 10, it's Apple fans touting numbers as an indication that Apple's products are better than (fill in the blank). Even in this thread. A bit hypocritical. But I expect nothing less.

Even voonyx who stated in another thread that the bashing (both ways) is silly - and yet stated here sarcastically, "the Nexus Prime, this weeks iPhone killer, will destroy this record..."

All ridiculous.

I wouldn't worry. The 2012 iPhone should have LTE, which would make the upgrade more than worth waiting for in my opinion. This is a great phone in many ways, and HSPA+ is about as fast as cheap home internet at this point, but LTE should blast it out of the water once we finally get our hands on it. Of course, waiting for LTE makes even more sense if you have Sprint or Verizon. FaceTime may finally work on the cell network once LTE is out. That would be pretty awesome.

It's no surprise that the iPhone 4S is a success. After 16 months since the introduction of the iPhone 4, a lot of people were ready to buy a new Apple phone. The new iPhone is great, but I still think that, this time, its success doesn't speak about Apple's innovation but about Apple's ability to make great profit.
