Few facts:
Apple is not going away!
Samsung is not going away!

Why do we constantly compare the two and spend countless hours debating which is better? I'm in the Apple camp and have made a conscious decision to this point. I'm happy for my Android loving friends...it's just not for me. Hardware/Software...which is better...who cares?

We are at a point in the smartphone world where incremental improves are the best we can expect. So it really boils down to user experience. My experience needs are different than the Android camps. I believe Apple is better positioned to improve the end users experience, but do I really care if Android users think? NO!

Not to start a flame war, but I do not lurk in the Android forums, but it seems their is a huge Android following in MRs...I wonder why?

EXACTLY! It's the question of having a device preference vs. being a hater. Having a device preference means you use what you want to use because it works for you, you enjoy the experience, etc. Haters (in my opinion) are those who go to the message boards dedicated to "that other device" and intentionally rip on the device and its users. It's a matter of intelligence. The differences could be discussed intelligently, but intelligence is a rapidly declining commodity what with the anonymity of the internet (and there's a rapid decline in the population that even gives a toss about that).

I'm with you, I don't care what Android users think, but if someone brings up a point or question regarding iOS vs. Android or Apple vs. Samsung without surrounding it with "OMG APPL3 SUX LOL @NDR01D HAZ BEN DOIN THIS 4EVAR GLXY S3 YOLO", I'm far more likely to engage in the conversation. I likely won't change my opinion, I prefer Apple and iOS over Android any day of the week and twice on Sundays, but being a fan of tech in general I enjoy talking about it.

(I'll add the caveat that Samsung isn't helping their case, what with the full-page ad in Sunday's paper and whining [yes, whining] about the $1B they've been ordered to pay to Apple. That's just adding fuel to the fire.)

omg who cares, GIVE US IMAC NEWS we dont know anything about those please move on from the iphone already we already know everything that needs to be known about it.

While it is your personal opinion that the iPhone doesn't need to be talked about anymore, that is not a shares opinion.

No one is holding a gun to your head and making you read these articles so don't.

I wrote a similar statement in another post and some people just like to spew
negative stuff about a product they don't even use. Nothing is ever perfect, but for my needs the iPhone is the best.

For others the Android is the best, we get it.

I didn't even think once ever to go onto an Android forum to knock the S III or whatever they have. It just doesn't interest me.

Maybe psychologically they need to put somebody else down to make themselves feel better?

Pretty sad actually!

That's the mentality of PC / android users unfortunately. Pimple faced keyboard warriors. They always claim Apple buyers are smug but I never see an Apple owner being rude to a PC / android owner. All I see is PC / android users swearing their heads off in a desperate attempt to defend their purchase. Goes to show who really is more mature :p very obviously I might add.

iPhone users don't hang out in android forums because they know they are completely content with their phone and don't need to get a 2nd opinion from another forum to back it up :p

Does this number include the carrier preorders/reservations?

Yes. Note that when they report "sales" next week, it will count only those units that have actually been shipped to customers (as customers can cancel orders before they ship).

I'd have preordered on O2 (uk) had they offered 12m contracts - only offering 24m is disgraceful!

This goes out to all the idiots who said they held stock to create hype!
2 MILLION!!!

Are there any Samsung forums where iPhone fans troll and post about their disappointments about the new Samsung products and praise Apple phones?

iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet

Duh! I guess I don't get the point of that statement, would they release a new iPhone that wasn't better than previous iPhones??

If they are referring to the best compared to the competition then they are completely wrong. The original iPhone and even the iPhone 4 (first with retina) was much better than the competition. I think with the iPhone 5 the gap between it and the competition has narrowed considerably.

For those questioning the numbers - Apple demands resellers/networks to provide daily "Velocity" reporting - ie report on devices that have shipped.

They then compare this against activations on iTunes.
This stops resellers/networks holding onto stock.

So, the numbers should be pretty accurate

Is this number just from Apple.com? or are the carrier pre-orders factored into it?

2 MILLION!!!

Uh ? What does one have to do with the other.

I'm not surprised. iPhone 4S was 1 million, iPhone 4 was 600,000. Seems 2 million is inline with their usual growth.

Big numbers for the new iPhone, as expected. This one will again sell tons more units than the previous generation.

100% year on year growth is impressive. The economy is arguably worse than it was a year ago, and the smartphone market hasn't grown that much. Also, there weren't any significant new carrier announcements on Wednesday.

I'm a big car enthusiast and it's like me going into a Mustang forum just to criticize that vehicle, when I don't own, or intend to own one (the current gen is actually a fantastic ride...).

There's several posters on this board - and I think most people that have been here for a few months could easily name them - that "police" the forums ... I mean they +actually+ spend time monitoring posts, responding (sometimes dozens of times in a row...), though they have zero interest in anything Apple related (other than to be negative towards the brand).

I just _do_not_ understand the mindset of those types of folks, but I guess I'm a happy, positive person. :)

Some can be smug....Apple executives are smug in their presentations putting other companies down

that smugness carries over

I was kind of hoping this iPhone wouldn't sell as well. Not because I hate Apple, but I want them to have a reason to innovate again. I want an upgrade on par with what the 3GS -> 4 was.

Tale of the tape

Android Fanboy - "Ugly, S3 is better, this thing won't sell"...

Apple - "We were blown away by preorders"...

Android Fanboy - "BS Hype, held back supply, marketing spin"

Apple - "2M Preorders, doubling the iPhone 4s record"

Android Fanboy - "Oh, well whatever, S3 is quad core so its faster"

Geekbench - "iPhone 5 runs at least as fast on only 2 cores, saving tons of battery"

Android Fanboy - "FML"

Did I miss anything?

1 million over 24 hours for the 4S and 2 million over 72 hours for the 5. I'm sure it outsold the 4S but these numbers cannot be compared.

edit: never mind it was written wrong on the main article, now its fixed.

LOL, I had quoted you to ask where you saw 72 hours cuz I read 24 hours for both 4S and 5, but by the time I finished reading through posts and clicked post reply... I saw your edit.
