i'm surprised...

at&T (and maybe other carriers) are not allowing an early upgrade so I would have thought the early uptake would be much slower than past phones.

- so are orders from people with older phones?
- or are people actually paying the non-subsidized fee?

You forget that there are quite a few of us who have hung onto our iPhone 4. Looks like there may have been more of us than expected...

It seems all these "leaks" of product info paid off!

As for me, the only thing holding me back is the outrageous Share Everything cost Verizon is forcing me to switch to if I want iPhone 5 at a subsidie.

I was kind of hoping this iPhone wouldn't sell as well. Not because I hate Apple, but I want them to have a reason to innovate again. I want an upgrade on par with what the 3GS -> 4 was.

You mean like an upgrade where they change the design and upgrade the screen? Oh wait.....

I would say this is pretty close. It has LTE, a bigger screen for the first time, a significantly updated processor (not just a faster one, but a brand new design - like going from Core 2 to Sandy Bridge was for the MacBook Air), and a new case. We won't see a significant increase in resolution anytime soon. The technology just isn't ready yet.

While over 2 million pre-orders of the iPhone5 is impressive, there's no indication what the limiting factor was. Could there have been more iPhone5 pre-orders or was there an artificial or arbitrary cap? Same comment applies to all previous iPhone pre-order numbers. If there were artificial or arbitrary caps, then over 2 million is not a true reflection of demand.

Samsung

Have you guys heard of the rumours of the Samsung S4. It could be coming out in February with a 5 inch screen. This is just geting ridiculous, why dont people just invest that money in better TVs.

Anyone else impressed by the fact that there was no mass-media advertising by Apple for pre-orders? Yet everyone knew about it.

I just wonder if next year we have the same old debate from the morons - "It's going to be called iPhone 7! This is because... *insert geek rationale here*"

I will use my crystal ball to predict:

iPhone 5 > iPhone 5S > iPhone 6 > iPhone 6S... Being the ongoing cycle, I know I'm a radical thinker.

These people must be brainwashed!! I hate Apple! I hate its closed ecosystem and prefer Google's open Android platform! I loathe Apple that it deliberately makes fragile iPhone and wants its customers to buy new iPhone whenever they release ones!! Their products are wayyyyy overpriced and they don't donate their profits to third world countries!! I WANT FREEDOM AND I DON'T WANT TO BE CONTROLLED BY APPLE!!! :p

So why not just chill out, enjoy what ever Android phone you have and stay away from the Apple forums because you sound borderline psychotic with all the apple hate.

Uh ? What does one have to do with the other.

I'm not surprised. iPhone 4S was 1 million, iPhone 4 was 600,000. Seems 2 million is inline with their usual growth.

Big numbers for the new iPhone, as expected. This one will again sell tons more units than the previous generation.

Whereby "inline with their usual growth" you mean 67% growth for the 4S to 100% growth for the iPhone 5. An increase of 400,000 for the 4S first day preorders compared to an increase of 1 million first day preorders for the iPhone 5.

Yet you claim it's predictable. As expected. Even though the trends do not support your argument.

Accelerated growth for the most successful product in the industry is pretty impressive. I can see how Apple was blown away. :)

I'm guessing the cap was due to manufacturing limits. It's only possible to make so many devices in how ever many months and get them ready to ship. And this is only Apple's numbers. The carriers have their own. Obviously the held some stock for the stores, but it would be ridiculous to imagine they make the phone only available online.

2 million people are just going with the stream.

Apple is not a "niche"/"we do it different" brand anymore.

Apple are given people what they want - just to make money (and thats ok - and good for the investers!). I think instead they should be more innovative and keep on designing things that surprises me. Keep on giving me things that are more "nice to have" than "need to have" because of aesthetic reasons.

The new ipod linie is a step back (maybe 2 gens.) if you look a the design - where is my very loved click-wheel? The Iphone is just more of the same.

Apple is a huge succes, no doubt! But for my money I want to be surprised and design-overwhelmed rather than getting the (maybe) best performing product. I guess its just not a brand for me anymore..

If Apple were just giving people what they want, I'm guessing the screen would be larger and we'd have NFC or at least simultaneous voice+data on CDMA/LTE carriers.

Name another product in Apple's history where they "keep on giving me things that are more "nice to have" than "need to have" because of aesthetic reasons". That word keep implies a pattern....which doesn't exist.

Surprise and design overwhelm is reserved for new products and the occasional design overhaul. It will not come every generation or even every second generation.

I'm guessing there was a cap based on what they knew they could deliver on Sept 21st. Knowing Apple, there's nothing arbitrary about it.

But I would like to know what that number is.

Uf, a rough day for haters.

Why is that ..? 2 million reasons to wait for the first flaws to show as with any new introduction --- remember the antenna on the 4? Haters or not, once the anticipation wears of we will get a good view of what the iPhone is about and in my case if its worth upgrading.

And of course the media spin is initial sales will be high but then it will tail off fast. can't wait until they all have egg on their faces. :D

Well, if they sell out and don't get new stock until 10/5? Sales will tail off fast...until they get more in stock... :D

I would think the majority of sales are not from people upgrading each year - this is the wave of people (like me) who are upgrading from the iPhone 4 after more than two years. Pent up demand.

Right. And for the most part? The initial wave of Verizon iPhone 4 customers (Pre-order group) isn't eligible for an upgrade until 10/7. That will be another huge group ready to upgrade, too. They were the ones that HAD to have the iPhone the second it was available on Verizon.

I agree. Screens are getting out of hand...

(sorry, I know it's bad, but I was laughing...)

Well, this is why Apple has not been able to provide any customer support in the past week. They're getting DDOS attacked by iPhone orders :D
