Well, this is impressive! Apple sells as many iPhone 5's in 24 hours as Nokia sold it's Lumia phones between january-march (Q1 of 2012)... That's three months of sales cramped into one day

Damn.

Congrats to Apple :apple:

100% year on year growth is impressive. The economy is arguably worse than it was a year ago, and the smartphone market hasn't grown that much. Also, there weren't any significant new carrier announcements on Wednesday.

It's always better to die tomorrow. Everyone should be using $10 pay-as-you-go phones by this time next year. These purchases are all credit based and don't reflect how poor this economy really is. QE3 is the nail in the coffin for this country. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I'd have preordered on O2 (uk) had they offered 12m contracts - only offering 24m is disgraceful!

I thought we had a law that forced providers to have 12mth contracts available? Did that not come in yet?

(Note, they don't have to be good value 12mth contracts!)

I'm guessing the cap was due to manufacturing limits. It's only possible to make so many devices in how ever many months and get them ready to ship. And this is only Apple's numbers. The carriers have their own. Obviously the held some stock for the stores, but it would be ridiculous to imagine they make the phone only available online.

Based on manufacture dates, about 5 weeks lead time before pre-orders.

Has anyone seen any TV or print advertising for iPhone 5? I know Apple generates a lot of free buzz but I'm surprised they don't have an ad ready to roll. They do for the iPods.

So are preorders even available for countries not launching on the 21st? If so this means they sold 2 million in only 9 countries!

Lol. Better check those black helicopters hovering outside your window!

Nice, a real sales number, not something like "sold out within X hours".

They always give a number like this. But I want to know what their cutoff was for day one delivery.

Where are the doomsayers from the previous threads? You know the ones that predicted the iPhone 5 wasn't going to sell well. :D

2 million people are just going with the stream.

Apple is not a "niche"/"we do it different" brand anymore.

Apple are given people what they want - just to make money (and thats ok - and good for the investers!). I think instead they should be more innovative and keep on designing things that surprises me. Keep on giving me things that are more "nice to have" than "need to have" because of aesthetic reasons.

The new ipod linie is a step back (maybe 2 gens.) if you look a the design - where is my very loved click-wheel? The Iphone is just more of the same.

Apple is a huge succes, no doubt! But for my money I want to be surprised and design-overwhelmed rather than getting the (maybe) best performing product. I guess its just not a brand for me anymore..

If they're giving us what we want, does that mean that we don't want radical changes? I'm fine with the iPhone 5 design. It looks a lot cooler than the iPhone 4. It's not as big of a change as the 3GS to 4 change, but it's bigger than the rest of the changes. And pretty much everything on the inside has been upgraded. It's not more of the same.

I had the cash on hand to buy mine. We are on a QE3 high, but still the Apple demand is very real.

Look at the stock history starting in 2009. The US has been steadily growing. In fact, the stock market goes down usually from US job reports or some other economic indicator growing less than expected or from European countries falling into debt.

Samsung also has refrigerators. You should climb in one and shut the door :)

That can save you from a nuclear blast you know? ;) George Lucas is destroying my childhood memories by ruining of his classic films...

A little off topic there, sorry.

take that. (those who said it will fail)

and what's more, unlike (ss), apple only initially released it to a limited number of countries and we've got an astounding figure!

Ironic considering there a 100s of other electronic companies that depend on Samsung and other hardware manufacturers and they're doing quite well.

I don't see your rationalization on how just cause a company doesn't create their own hardware means they will not last, especially since this has been the nature of the industry for decades.

Go read a book.

Edit: Was referring to the idiot you were quoting.

There is nothing more sad than lining outside a store for a product you can Pre order online and have delivered on launch.

For any product this is really sad.

Stocks are not indicative of economic growth.
