buy one, then come back here in a years time to discuss your grubby grey bezel (that was once white) and broken power supplies!

That’s still going to stick out of the side which won’t look great. Why not put it with the rest of the ports at the back? The headphone/speaker jack is the one port I *never* need to change, yet it’s the one they’ve given us easy access to. Very odd design decision.
That's your preference. People who frequently plug-unplug will appreciate the change. They probably did the consumer study and most of the people prefer easy access

This is an absolute joke right?

From a practical standpoint, let me share a few things:

  1. I own a fall 2021 imac, the i9 version with the 16gb video card option
  2. I also own an M1 based macbook pro
The imac is now a macbook pro.

It is actually in many ways quite a downgrade from the intel based mac if you are using the machine to multitask and do a lot of heavy production work.

Daily I get warnings from cleanmymacx that tell me that my macbook is running out of ram and swap space, and although the graphics on the m1 are fast, they do not hold their own vs the radeon in the imac.

The fact that I cannot even get the new imac with more than 8gb of ram is a big misstep, and I do not say this as a troll or mac hater, because I was prepared to buy the arm based silicon and likely would have had it had a bigger ram option.

Apple, I seriously hope you can consider that we professional creators are still out there and are still willing to pay $4000 for a machine.

This today was not what I had expected, perhaps the fall event will give me what I am after.
This replaced the 21” entry level machines, just as the M1 MacBook Air and M1 mini are replacements for the ENTRY level machines. You know this, you have to...

What happened with Apple design department. They hired Tims grandchild as head designer? That new iMac is a total fail. Obviously Looks good in a kindergarten.
They kept the shin which should have gone away just for thinness. But even more wrong is the the white screen bezel. It should at least have the same colour as the rest; the colour you order.
On Apple website they call it “This extraordinary design…” . Well I am not happy, I wanted one with mini mouse around here and there in pink.

Price hiking certain colors is one of the most ridiculous fkn things I’ve

Oh please like they couldn’t have figured out a way to put that behind the monitor. It’s got half the guts of the iPad Pro
It's also got two fans and a >100W power supply. Unless you literally just want an iPad Pro with a massive screen, comparing the two doesn't make much sense.

OWG! It’s gonna be a Epic fall! It’s the first opportunity they can come up something new after Steve, and look what they’ve done?! It looks like some cheap Chinese knock off.

Ah yes, that’ll be why. Still, it seems a frustratingly imperfect solution.
Yeah i mean i wonder if the port still has a optical connection inside or if that’s gone too. Because it looks like a weird placement for something that’s supposed to be connected permanently, like desktop speakers for example.

Clearly Apple looked to the past when designing this new iMac:

To bad they excluded the black option, that would be the one i would be going for. I mean now I’m kinda confused, i will be getting one but I’m not sure which color, leaning towards silver but yellow is also my favorite color otherwise so 😆

Be keeping my 27” iMac. This is gonna be a hard sell. I suspect this will sell well with teens and schools but for professionals it will be a hard pass.

You know this isn't the replacement for your 27" iMac, right?

I'm guessing the 30"+ model will be offered in "traditional" colors and will be more up your alley.

I'm nostalgic for the days when a design like this was unheard of. We've been spoiled by too much of this freaking incredible technology that it doesn't blow my mind a 24" all-in-one computer is as thin as a pancake.

I am worried, however, as the opportunities for expansion are basically zero outside of an external peripheral. We all knew it was coming to this but it doesn't make it right.

Is it me or the old iMac looks better than the current one except for the hinge maybe? I mean seriously nothing can express my disappointment after all these years of wait for them to come up with a hello kitty consumer PC....

SKU hell

4 colours 8 core cpu/7 core GPU 256 GB
7 colours 8 core cpu/8 core GPU 256 GB
7 colours 8 core cpu/8 core GPU 512 GB
7 colours Keyboard
7 colours Mouse
X RAM options?
X Storage options?

The SSD size options are anemic. The highest is 512? I can get more storage in an iPad than my home computer? Not in the market but its not a good trend.
It’s a desktop. A usb-c hub plus three 14TB hard drives is quite affordable. Or a USB-C hub and three 8TB SSD drives. Or you order with a built-in 2TB SSD.

Yes, much better, even the stand looks better.
What I, and plenty others would have preffered is a thicker body with the guts behind the display without a chin, and 2 colours only, standard (aluminium) and space grey.

I have a feeling they're keeping the chin as some kind of weird "brand ID" or something. Otherwise it would look like a nondescript monitor.

  • No SD card reader
  • No USB A
  • Only 2 Thunderbolt Ports on the base model / 2 TB and 2 USB C on the high end
  • White bezels
  • Chin...
  • No black/space grey
  • Mouse still charges in the base
  • Touch ID keyboard only comes standard on the $1499 version - base still has the normal non touch id magic keyboard (will be a spec option I guess)

Kinda expected more from Apple for their main desktop machine
That’s why you get a 10 port USB hub if you need it. Or a five port USB hub if that’s enough. Or none if you don’t need it.

It's not that bad.

They are just attributes.

You start with the model... then you pick storage... then RAM... then color.

Luckily Apple's backend database will keep track of all those SKUs.

Cars are even worse... they come in multiple colors too... some with sunroofs and some without... some with the premium sound systems and some without... 5 different wheel options... etc.

There are probably 500 different configurations for a particular car... SKUs if you will... and no one cares.

:p
