This is awesome! I really like it.

However, anyone else notice that the Web Clip function is gone?

It's still there...go to View>Customize Toolbar. It's there.

On a different note, i really miss the blue loading bar. Not sure if I like the tabs on the top either, but like everyone else said, it sure is faster!

I'm liking the new Windows version (will try Mac version when home from work tonight).

Some points:

- some areas a little slow. It's clear that Apple is preparing for the 'instant web' of the future; the blue progress bar has been replaced with an indicator wheel - this browser was clearly not designed for dial-up. Top hits takes a bit of time with little pauses here and there but I suspect these disappear with increasing broadband speeds.

- I can't for the life of me work out how to get full screen zooms (on Windows version at least)

- new tabs take a little getting used to. You can no longer drag rearrange tabs from anywhere in the tab button due to conflicts with window moving actions. I keep reaching for the area under the bookmarks bar to switch tabs but I guess habits will change.

- with lots of tabs, the active tab is larger than the others, which means the tab sizes change a lot when switching - more useful but not sure from a UI perspective. When there are many tabs and the [...] tab is displayed, a handy view of all tabs is shown but this is not present when there are fewer tabs.

- First impressions generally good though. I'm only using the Windows version which was dog slow before so good now.

I am very impressed with the speed coming out of Safari 4 Beta. I been using webkit for the last couple of months and Safari 4 is very nicely polished and is now my main browser. Did I tell you its snappy as hell too?

This was buried on the previous page (people posting to quickly) so I'll post it again... Can someone please explain to me what the heck "Speculative Loading" is?

Speculative Loading (NEW): Safari loads the documents, scripts, and style information required to view a web page ahead of time, so they’re ready when you need them.

It will probably be buried again just as quickly in another few minutes.

Sounds like the application-level use of predictive branching technology, which is pretty cool.

I assume what it will do is try to predict which link you are going to follow next and go ahead and start loading things for that link -- stylesheets, scripts -- so that when you click on it, they're already there.

it was slow at first but using it more and more, the speed picked up.

no idea

heres a tip to rearrange, drag the little right hand corner instead of the whole tab to move them around or detach

I don't understand. Safari 4 has been available for months, and I've been using it for a good while now.

Found it! Added that to my toolbar along with the new resize feature! I'm already in love with this :)

So Safari says: Well maybe the user will click here so lets load the page in the background in case?

:( 1Password is gone and I thought the update was just a separate Safari program that would allow me to 'test' without uninstalling Safari 3.

Not a fan of the tabs being at the top of Safari though. Edit: I see someone may have a fix.

Anyone else have the quick dial looking thing take forever to load all those sites and where is it getting the list of what to load?

Like what? Top sites? Tab bars at top? Improved JS engine?

Not in the non-beta releases.

Opera, Opera, different JS engines for FF, Opera, and Safari therefore not really a valid point.

Internet Explorer has had this feature for years: press F11 on IE for Windows and there it is.

Full screen is not the same as full page zoom.

Works great on my 1st Gen MBA - it's very fast and I love the Opera like Top Sites feature.
However, the tabs on top (again from Opera) is absolutely horrible and simply doesn't work

Fixed

Top sites and tab bars at top have been in chrome since it was released

Copied from opera

I remember the first time I tried Chrome, I was like 'tabs at the top! Which idiot thought of that!'

Probably the idiot who saw that Opera and copied it ;)

I'll have a play around with Safari 4 beta when I get to a mac that has 10.5.6. Still haven't got around to sorting out the updating bug on my laptop so still on 10.5.5.

Although I don't think it will pull me away from Opera 10 alpha or even Opera 9.63

Gee, Apple seemed to really botch this beta. Everything that uses webkit does not work...including iTunes and Mail. I expect a patch very, very soon.

I think the blue star means it is a site you visit quite often. Top sites is a pretty cool feature, but as somebody said, it would be better if it showed all your tabs open instead, sort of like Expose.

No opinion for/against the top tabs...it does save space, but we'll see how often I accidentally move a tab when trying to move the window. At least you can change it back with a terminal command. Anybody know if you can get the blue loading bar back this way too??

I hope there's a patch for Inquisitor soon. Google suggestions isn't nearly as good.

Edit: My issues were entirely due to InputManagers. Sorry for blaming you, Apple.

I'm really liking Safari 4. And, though I thought I wouldn't, I also like the new tab location. Very good use of otherwise useless space. It takes some getting used to, but it's a nice space saver.

The new tabs are the sole reason I 've been using the otherwise very underwhelming google chrome. There really is no reason to waste screen real estate, especially now that the average movie viewing joe has forced computer makers in the awful for reading 16:10 format. This is a good choice by apple, even if it alienates some old time users. Now If only the best browser on the planet which is no other than opera could implement this too.

//VIP, APPLE INCREASE FONT SIZE IN ADDRESS BAR UNLESS YOU PLAN TO BRANCH OUT ON THE READING GLASSES BUSINESS.

I am very impressed with the develop menu. It is a much more polished approach than firebug and although it is missing a few features it has many more new useful functions.

All in all I am very impressed and am looking forward to the final release.

A smart pre-fetch, based on your last sights visited, I would expect.

It just pre-loads what it determines to be the static data elements.
