It'll take me a while to get used to the new tab position, but I really like the new browser.

That's been there before :p

Sure you can edit the list, just hit Edit on the bottom and you can delete or pin sites.

Yes but you can only delete them or keep the wites that Safari thinks are your favorites. You can add new websites or edit their address.

I downloaded it with no problem. It ran beautifully and much faster than the older version. It did not allow iPassword to load however and I was not able to use this plug-in. This is something I use a lot so I used the uninstall feature to put back my older Safari program. It did so without a hitch. I'd say this is a good working Safari 4 with a lot of usable new features including faster loading of web pages. I will go back to it as soon as iPassword fixes the plug-in for this version of Safari.

I like Top Sites (NSFW though!)
hate hate hate tabs at the top
seems very fast.

Apple finally gave people a new tab button!
To each their own I guess.

For me:

Like Top Sites
hate hate hate people who view porn at work.
seems very fast.

;)

ok something good

ahh they did add in two button simultaneous click for fast zooming up and down the page which was absent before, this is very nice to have lol, it even has an interesting take on it, so that something at least...sorry macboys with your one button....or no buttons lol i guess this one is just for us windows users

THEY GOT RID OF THE BLUE LOADING BAR IN THE URL BOX!:mad::mad::mad:

Put it back!

I totally agree. The BLUE PROGRESS BAR was one of THE FEATURES that made safari an excellent browser. Every time I used another browser I didn't know have much it had loaded because I couldn't see a progress (yes, I know firefox has one tiny one down in a corner).
Now safari looks more like the iphone's safari, but that still has its blue progress bar. Put it back, Apple. I hope you just forgot it in this beta.

overall I think its a great update. I love the top sites idea.

I just downloaded it. Safari 4 is absolutely amazing!!! I'm loving the new taps at the top of the page and the Top Sites page is super cool.

Seems very snappy to me, but these tabs are going to take some time of getting used to.

I don't think you can. Yes you can delete or pin sites, but I believe he's asking if he can specifically say what sites he can put there. Like having a little + button would be awesome. As of now, as far as I know, when you click the delete X, it just pulls in another website from your history. I'd like to be able to add specific sites to the 6, 12 or 18 panes instead of hoping that it finds the one I want.

Still does not fix the Banking SSL / login problems I and others have been having since the last update (BB&T bank for one). I have to use Firefox just to log into my bank.

I thought it was based on what sites you visit the most. So eventually only your top sites should be visible.

Viewing favorites and bookmarks via coverflow is very intuitive! That's a huge plus. I want Apple to redesign finder - not with coverflow - but in the form of a polyarchy browser. Do it!

I do wish they'd bring back the progress bar. That's a nice UI gesture.

Agreed. I tried rearanging my tabs and the entire page moved. I was like "WTF!?". Then i found out you have to click the lil triangle thingy on the corner of each tab to move them.

EDIT: I notice that MacRumors loads faster with S4 compared to S3

I really like the new Safari, I feel it's notably faster, smoother and innovative. I haven' t had any of the problems with mail or anything else mentioned so far so finger's crossed I continue to enjoy it. Would also like a '+' butotn on top sites so you could chose what came up.

I must say that so far, after about 3 hours of hard browsing, I'm very impressed with Safari 4.

Good points for me are:-

  • It's fast!
  • Tabs on top - I know a lot of people don't like this, but I found I got used to it very quickly and, as somebody else said, it uses up otherwise wasted space.
  • Coverflow in history - never seen the point of Coverflow before but it's perfect here.
  • Top sites - very handy, and I'm happy to let Safari chose, given that you've got some control.
  • Developer options - not really explored this yet but the new features look very exciting.

No problems found yet - Gmail and https sites are OK, though some are reporting an unsupported browser which is understandable. As I'm also using the FF3 beta, I've had to download Opera to access my bank account!

Have they fixed the memory leak issue in Safari (Mac Version)?
That's one of the main reasons I like FF in mac over Safari. Has it been fixed yet?

The Snapback feature has been removed. Bummer.

I think there was another company claiming to own the rights to that feature, so maybe they had a legitimate claim?

snapback hasn't been completely removed

the button shows up for the search field

This is one Safari update that definitely is snappier. Sites were loading a little slow on my 1.5GHz 12" PB. Now they load noticeably faster. I can also finally watch YouTube videos on some sites were it would just stutter (TouchArcade.com).

I really like the Top Tabs because it eeks out just that much more screen space and since I use keyboard shortcuts to change tabs anyway, the placement means nothing. Top Sites is also a neat addition. Not sure how much I'll actually use it though. I do like CoverFlow in History though. Seems like that is the kind of thing it was made for.

Overall, the best part for me is that it's a lot faster in everything than Safari 3. You may not notice it on a C2D machine but on a lowly G4 there is a huge difference.

Gmail isn't loading for me now. My ASU Gmail account loads properly, but when I try to go to Gmail.com to access my personal account it just goes to a blank page.

Safari 4 was crashing after installation. I opened Console in Applications/Utilities and it showed Safari crashed when loading Glims plugin. Uninstalled Glims and now Safari 4 is running :D

So if Safari 4 is crashing for you check for plugins etc

Btw the click2flash plugin works fine :)

[/LIST]

Does this mean that developers will be able to change gui/appearance of Safari? that would be amaaaazing? It's the only thing I don't like about my new Mac- would love to give my Safari (and itunes for that matter) a new skin like you could do with a pluggin for itunes (around version 7.2 or something). I miss the all white look I used to be able to get.

Also, do you think the sort of incremental increase in performance and stability is indicative of the improvements we're likely to see in Snow Leopard (damn I'm excited about that now...) :D
