I miss the old tabs. I like the Tiger support as well. I just need Cocktail to catch up with some of the features that I enabled in the past.

Woops, I didn't know you can also upload files. Or just replace SupportedBrowsers.plist with this modified one:

amazingly fast response, thank you so much...seems to be working again from inside the application but I no longer have the "key" in the toolbar..

I just downloaded this for my Windows box at work and it is FAST! I've been using Google Chrome since it came out in September, but I think I will be reverting back to Safari now.

I love the Top Sites feature because I can easily go to the websites I visit to most often.

The rendering of websites is faster than Google Chrome and 10x faster than Internet Explorer (not really a surprise).

I'll be downloading this tonight to put on my Macs. I had the Safari 4 Beta last year, but before a lot of these new features were added.

If your 1Passwords stops working you need to modify the SupportedBrowsers.plist File.
This allows 1Password to work with this developer preview version of Safari.

I did this earlier and it crashed Safari. Seems their input manager hack is not up to par with Safari 4.

UPDATE: I just re-did the hack, and this time Safari is happy. I had to add the 1passwd button back to the toolbar (View->Customize Toolbar) but it now appears to work!

Does anyone know how to turn the recent searches in the Google section of the toolbar off?

First, I love the new Beta. I have been using the developer's version of 4 for the last several weeks and had removed FF from both my Mac and my Windows machines as I no longer used it. Safari was just better. Loved the developer's version and this is even better, though I've only been using it on Windows. Can't wait to try it on my new iMac when I get home.

I had been using Chrome and REALLY liked its speed. Frankly, the new Beta of Safari 4 seems even faster so it will likely be my default browser.

Only gripes--I concur with numerous posters on here about hotmail not working. Gmail is fine but hotmail is not. Hopefully that will get rectified soon. Also, the Beta on my Windows machine does not have the Top Site or Cover Flow features. It must be an issue with my graphics card in my laptop. Can't wait to try those features out on my iMac.

It will take a while to get used to the tabs.

The other thing I want back is the blue loading bar in the address bar.

so here is what I like about Safari 4 (BETA) for some who think this is another complaint, it's not

PROS:
Sleek new nice design of the browser, it looks better than Safari 3
Runs much faster than FF
Love the new gadgets they integrated into the browser, like Top Pages, and CoverFlow

CONS:
Doesn't have a remember password manager that I am used to in FF, although in the long run that may be much safer to have
I can't keep the fonts the same size in different windows. Even if the pages I am surfing are form the same page within itself, like links within the MR forums
Edit: Yes I also miss the blue progress bar, please bring it back

Other than that, it's a great browser. So far no hardware problems to report

How to run Safari 4 beta and Safar 3 on the same mac

Just in case anyone was interested, it is possible to run both versions simultaneously on your machine. I've written up step-by-step instructions on my site:

http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2009/02/24/safari4-safari3

Oh, and not sure if this was posted earlier, but to revert to the old tab style, there is a preference you can set in the terminal:

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool NO

well, checking hotmail doesn't work for me. I click on a new message and nothing happens. i could live with this. everything else is blazing fast.

I really wasn't that back too. I've visited apple.com/feedback but Safari isn't under that... do you think that Apple want feedback and if so how ?

Ok, so I deleted Glims and I am glad.. Safari 4 is really nice. I really like how you can edit your top sites and pin the sites you want to keep in Top Sites.. really cool experience so far..

Has apple fixed any of the real issues with Safari, such as the fact that it crashes too often and when it does everything, all the pages and tabs, go down in a spectacular display of bad browser design?

Is it faster at all? More importantly, for heavy web users like me who tend to open many pages with many tabs and keeping them open for days does Safari become sluggish and eat up all of the systems memory and swap space, even after I have closed many of the open pages? I hate to be forced to close safari completely and open it again, sometimes loosing what was in many of the pages I was looking at because Safari doesn't remember all of them for some reason.

Sometimes I even have to reboot the whole system because Safari has made it so sluggish, that is just so windowsish...

Better use of system memory, some proper garbage collection and one thread for each pane, so as to one crashing browser window does not crash whole of safari, is what Apple should be concentrating on.

OMG I can't believe it! Apple does it again by leading innovation.

Holy moly if this isn't the hottest browser on the planet what then?

Firefox, Chrome, IE who?

Sorry for my drooling!
Apparently, "leading innovation" now means "copying Google Chrome."

Seriously, there is nothing innovative or compelling about Safari 4. Is it a nice upgrade from Safari 3? Yes, it is. But there's nothing in it that isn't already in Google Chrome, Firefox 3 or Opera.

Anyone else having problems in Tiger? I've installed it and it loads my homepage, but the spinning loading icon then stops and the browser freezes, I can access the preferences and everything in the top bar, but I can't make a new tab or click anything in the window. :/ I haven't installed it on my mac pro (leopard) yet but I guess it's back to 3 for me.......

On Mac in Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop false

And it will look like Safari 3 again. :)

hmmmm okay, I did this, how do I get it back to looking liek safari 4?
I tried this

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop true

Help? Maybe? Please?

is there any tweak or plugin that would enable favicon in the bookmark bar like the image below

Turn back on:
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop 1

Progress Bar

Not sure where the blue progress bar went, Apple calls it out on Safari 4 Beta website.
