how can I send Apple feedback about putting that blue bar back in? I keep thinking web pages aren't loading because I'm so used to it and let's be honest, it's a Safari staple.

It's not a bug and that's the only feedback button Apple provides.

It's true, you only appreciate something when you don't have it anymore :(

Report it as a bug using the bug button at the right hand side of the google search box

The new Smart Address Field alone is worth the upgrade. It's a lot like Firefox's "Awesome bar", which is one of its best features.

New tab bar is..... interesting. Kind of hard to get used to. I miss "double click to create new tab" from Safari 3.

Top Sites is surprisingly cool. I could see myself using this.

Fast. A little buggy, since it's beta, but quite fast.

Native look and feel for Windows is very important. It was ridiculous to force a non-native appearance. Imagine if the situation were reversed - you wouldn't want a Mac browser that had Windows style scroll bars and widgets and everything.

I miss the progress bar. In fact that alone may cause me to not use it.

I agree, this is one of Safari's totally unique and best features. It's still available in the beta VIA a hidden preference, just like the old tabs. Hope they don't get rid of it altogether. Perhaps people should voice their opinion to Apple about it.

gmail + safari 4

+1 for gmail issues. my google apps/work account is working, but gmail itself gets stuck on a blank page - apart from that great browser.

any ideas on getting gmail unstuck for safari 4?

I'm sure this has been posted previously, but just to reiterate....

The new refresh button DOES double as a stop button. Just click the spinning icon while a page is loading and, hey presto! Stopped.

It starts up slow slow at first. But then it picked up. I really like the new address bar! Love the top sites.

Only thing is, I like the animation you get after you click on one of the top sites but it takes way too long.

Has apple fixed any of the real issues with Safari, such as the fact that it crashes too often and when it does everything, all the pages and tabs, go down in a spectacular display of bad browser design?

That is a rather new development in browser design. I would expect Safari to adopt this approach in the future.

Is it faster at all? More importantly, for heavy web users like me who tend to open many pages with many tabs and keeping them open for days does Safari become sluggish and eat up all of the systems memory and swap space, even after I have closed many of the open pages? I hate to be forced to close safari completely and open it again, sometimes loosing what was in many of the pages I was looking at because Safari doesn't remember all of them for some reason.

I would assume the Leopard version is using the new GC support provided by the objective-c 2.0 runtime. Which should help with leaky code (if there was any to begin with). A lot of the memory usage is probably intentional. Better to keep objects that are most likely going to be needed again than to dealloc and re-alloc everytime. Again, I don't know how Safari's structured, so a total shot in the dark hear.

Better use of system memory, some proper garbage collection and one thread for each pane, so as to one crashing browser window does not crash whole of safari, is what Apple should be concentrating on.

Again, the Leopard version is probably GC'd. One thread per each tab isn't going to do anything in that area. You probably meant one process per tab, a la Google's Chrome.

thank you for that!

Gmail works fine. Google was having problems earlier with service.

Also, I've using the beta on Tiger at work. I can't use Safari Adblock - I REALLY hope it isn't broken - but Click2Flash still works. Brushed metal is gone, but since it was designed to match Leopard's appearance, some things look a little off.

An option to save the current session with all tabs would be cool. Just like FF3 does. All other features are great and speed is good!

The improved reader sounds good... I can see (and read) just fine, but I have dreams of writing a little app to scrape a couple websites into computer generated audio files that I can listen to in the car and at work. The "describing what appears on the screen" sounds like it might make something like this usable.

Found another bug:

Maximize javascript function doesn't work after you have more than one tab. It's the one functionality I require back in Safari...

Does anyone know another shortcut for maximize?
