Anyone know if there's anyway to make all the tabs the same size at first then shrink them when they max out the top, instead of stretching them to fill the whole top? It's annoying to not have a default position to move the tabs since you can only move them with the corner.

Typing "g blah blah" and it searching Google for "blah blah" is the best. It just beats anything else.
.

yah, Opera comes up with some REALLY innovative features and then other browsers copy it. it's just sad how Opera is still the underdog while others copy them.

It looks great! I'm liking the new tabs and the Top Sites feature is actually pretty useful. Some of the changes like the moving of the refresh button to the address bar (like the iPhone/iPod touch) will take awhile to get used to but it seems really nice. And it's faster than it was before even!

An option to save the current session with all tabs would be cool. Just like FF3 does. All other features are great and speed is good!

it already does, after launching safari goto history menu and click "Reopen all windows from last session" voila :)

On the other hand, the full zoom feature is excellent. I can live with the horrible tabs just for that.

The lack of a stop/refresh button is inexcusable, however.

Of course it still has a stop refresh button :D

where the spinning wheel shows it's loading is the refresh/stop button..

How the heck is this any different from the Safari 4 that I already have?

Oh, is it just because this is the beta and I have the Developer Preview? What's the difference?

I think if you've actually tried looking for yourself, you would've noticed. ;) The developer preview is much, much different, lacking some of the new features found in the beta build.

messenger no longer working with Safari 4?

Just installed Safari 4 Beta on my 2 machines and it would seem it has interfered with messenger for mac. I am running the latest version of Leo and messenger.

The problem seems to be after I send an instant message, I have to click back on the text-entry box before I can write the next message. This gets very annoying as it makes it harder to keep a convo going as you have to continually reclick in the text box after each message.

Anyone else encountered this problem?

Cheers

That feature has been there: Bookmarks > Add Bookmark for these X tabs

Gmail works fine. Google was having problems earlier with service.

Also, I've using the beta on Tiger at work. I can't use Safari Adblock - I REALLY hope it isn't broken - but Click2Flash still works. Brushed metal is gone, but since it was designed to match Leopard's appearance, some things look a little off.

gmail may work fine for some people, but for others it does not. it hangs. this is not a gmail issue it's safari. i can access it gmail with other browsers and devices.

anyway, any ideas?

I love this version, mostly.

It now runs at a tolerable speed(something Safari never did for me before)
It looks great(like what the Mac version of Chrome will look like, I'm guessing)

But I do miss the URL loading bar, and the separate button for stop/reload.
Also, it takes a lot of obvious things from Chrome(top tabs, and top sites for example) so idk...seems like Apple is just trying to get people to stay with their software when Chrome does finally come out.

As of right now though, if they make it a little faster, this will have to replace FF3 as my default browser

I had the developer preview as well but it didn't include the new features listed with the beta

Is anyone having problems attaching images to posts, using Safari 4? I just tried and clicking the "Choose File" button does nothing.

+1 for gmail issues. my google apps/work account is working, but gmail itself gets stuck on a blank page - apart from that great browser.

any ideas on getting gmail unstuck for safari 4?

There seem to be a problem with Gmail offline using Google gears, you need to disable it in another browser.

well....you got google chrome in my safari.

btw sunspider benchmark says safari 4 is 1.5x faster than the firefox 3.2a which is 1.5x faster than the 3.1beta which is i forgot how much faster than than 3.0

so in the end, safari 4 is faster than any firefox out there. dont know if its faster than opera or chrome (PC)

The new Smart Address Field alone is worth the upgrade. It's a lot like Firefox's "Awesome bar", which is one of its best features.

Seriously? It is nothing like Firefox's bar. In Firefox I can type any word within a history or bookmark title and it'll find it. With Safari 4 I still have to type the first letter of the url for it to give me suggestions. This really annoys me as it seems like very important functionality. OmniWeb works the same as Firefox. Why can't Apple implement this system?

Aside from that Safari 4 is too unstable to use for me. It immediately crashes any time I open more than 1 tab. I've reported to Apple every time it crashes so hopefully they can figure the problem out. The only plug-in I use is 1Password.

Update: After using Safari 4 for a week I've found its address field to be superior to Firefox and Omni Web. I'm still disappointed that it doesn't search text inside of the title's, but overall I've had an easier time navigating with Safari 4 than any other browser. As far as the functionality I was speaking of for searching, that functionality exists on the new Top Sites page in the search field.

java speed

Not sure what they meant by JAva speed improvements, but I for one have a problem with some JAVA apps, trading apps that are broken. Bad data feeds, and updates and alerts are going off 2-3 times now for the SAME alert. Not sure what is wrong.

The stop/reload button is in the address bar. If you hit reload it will start to reload, then if you hit the spinning wheel it will stop.

As for the loading bar, totally agree, this better make a reappearance. Also I would like the bookmarks button not to be part of the address bar as it takes up room and I always Command-D it anyway.

Weren't Leopard and Safari 3 released almost simultaneously? Does this mean that Snow Leopard is imminent?
