how do i download all of my past historys when i view my history? I have a ton of older pages that are not showing it in cover flow.

Trying it out now. So far so good. The graphics looks better to me. The speed, not so much different feeling at the moment. But these things usually take a while to get used to... so I'll wait for a week or 2 for my judgement. Enjoy the beta, everyone!

Awesome sauce. I gotta ask again, how does one find these features? I presume there is a config file or something somwhere.

Anyone know how to change the zoom speed of the pinch feature using the trackpad? I think that's my last gripe.

I didn't even think to try pinch to zoom - man is that fast. And my trackpad is set to quite slow 'scrolling speed', and changing that doesn't seem to affect it. As it is, it's really pretty useless that it is supported.

Re all of the CLI lines for hidden preferences, I find it quite funny that exactly the same thing happened when iTunes 8 came out. We all just wanted it back the way it was :). So far this time though I haven't seen it documented for how to make those changes on Windows - it would certainly be my browser of choice there as well if I could.

the biggest thing i am missing out on is inquisitor. I hope they update it ASAP!
Yes... the as-you-type suggestions in the new default search help, but it's no Inquisitor. 1Password was easy to get working by changing a plist but I guess Inquisitor is more complicated. Safari Adblock still works though.

I've organized some of my thoughts about the new tabs after using Safari 4 all day:
- More of a disconnect between tabs and window contents. You have to look farther to see them, the tile text is smaller than the OS X standard, and it's less obvious how many tabs are open and what one is selected. Mainly, it just feels awkward. Perhaps one could get used to it... I don't know.
- You have to move your mouse much farther (it may be like 60 pixels, but you can really feel the difference) to select a tab or open a new tab. New tab button is way too far over to even bother with over a right-click or command-t.
- Difficult to rearrange tabs, end up dragging whole window around sometimes.

Google Chrome's tabs at the top don't bother me, because they're:
- not integrated with the title bar
- there's less visual clutter between the tab and the page (though there's no bookmarks bar either)
- much more contrast indicating the open tab
- the new tab button always appears right next to the last open tab.

I think it's the title bar integration in Safari 4 that bugs me the most. And maybe because we've never seen it done before and it's just going to take some adjusting to. When you have only 2 or 3 tabs open it's very awkward. It also feels too small to me, maybe if they were bigger it would help.

if this release is so innovative, why are those highlighted features either irrelevant or already available on Firefox?

You're right. Apple borrowed a bunch from Firefox and Chrome. The coverflow is pretty cool though.

The real innovation is what's under the hood with the new webkit and support for HTML 5 and CSS 3.

Just installed Safari 4 for Windows and I have to say that it LOOKS and FEELS A LOT like GOOGLE CHROME... Even the buttons designs look almost identical to me.. I am running it side by side with Google Chrome and I could see little to no difference except in the FONT itself..

Whatsup with this Apple???:confused::confused:

yeh but i hate bulky title/toolbars. it looks good slim like this but the problem is dragging tabs around when not clicking the little 'handle' and end up dragging the whole application around. Apple cant implement dragging the whole tab as its the title bar. i guess we just have to get used to it. but i would rather the tabs be under the address bar but still be facing up. and we need an option to remove the 'new tab' button, i like a clean interface and remove stuff i dont use.

also i though 'tabs at the top' would mean Safari would make tabs multiple processes like Chrome? maybe thats coming in the full version?

UI is pretty much a copy of Chrome, the way the tabs are and such. The 3D look of Top sites is just silly IMO.

And it screwed up Messenger Mac.

It's marketed well on the Apple site though.

*Waits for the Mac version of Chrome*

No refresh button

Anyone else notice that the refresh/stop load page button has gone completely missing from the toolbar and its not available in the customize toolbar area either.

It is not gone, it is in the address window, and there is a hack that will fix it.

Would you know how to open a simple blank new tab, click and you have a new tab? When I press new tab or + it opens Top Sites window, then I have to press any site and then go into my bookmarks. May be I am doing something wrong?:( Also, is there any way to move tabs back to the bottom?

Question

For some reason i am not able to see any pictures from any website. this does not happen in any of my other browsers any suggestions, anyone have the same problem. hope this can get solved cuz i love the new safari

So I just installed it and it wouldn't start at all. I clicked on Safari and it would automatically crash. So I'm back to 3 now, but I guess i might give it another shot later. :(

Uninstall Glims. Library > Application Support > Delete "Glims" Folder

If you don't have Glims, try uninstall other plugins. Should fix your problem.

"Full Page Zoom" is now available from:
- Safari 4 Beta
- Opera (been full screen zoom since so long that I can't even remember which version started it all)
- Firefox 3 (discovered that last night, and even said "now only Safari is missing this"*).

* = Internet Explorer 11, available in 2035, will probably have it too. ;)

Now, the question on my mind is: can we have both Safari 3 and Safari 4 Beta installed at the same time on our Mac? Won't they fight over things like bookmarks, etc?

edit: and no, this isn't better than a Mac mini update. :p

Opera has the best full screen functionality of any browser. So good in fact that I actually used it as part of a kiosk interfact system that I wrote.

Go into the preferences and set a new tab to load a "Blank Page." (By default, it's set to Top Sites.)

It's competition. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Adobe, etc. all copy ideas from one another. This is a good thing, as in the end, we as consumers win by getting better products are more competitive prices.

Safari 4 is clearly a better web browser than Safari 3 because of the competition Safari faced from Google Chrome, IE8 and Firefox 3.

I personally hate the position of the tabs, it totally messes the page titles, and the close tab button is to close to the window controls, and you have to grab tabs to move the window? That is plain silly. Reordering tabs is painful, I keep moving the window, not the tab, just need to be more precise I suppose, but never had an issue before. I still can't see why it is an improvement moving them. To me having the tab attached to the actual page made the most sense, not the top of the window.

Just because Google does it, doesn't always make it a good idea.
I also miss the blue loading status behind the URL, and the position of the reload is weird to me too. Removed from all the other controls.

How to access Top Sites

Top sites is available from your bookmark bar. Top left of the screen, under the left/right arrow buttons, there are two buttons. The first looks like a book - that's the bookmarks button. The second looks like a grid (4x3) of black boxes. That's the Top Sites button.

Unhide the bookmark bar if you have it hidden (see View menu).

So far I've found three ways of accessing "top sites":
  1. From bookmark bar
  2. From History menu
  3. CMD+SHIFT+1

It is kind of interesting that it appears in the "History" menu but the "Bookmark" bar. I tend to think of "Top Sites" as history since you never bookmarked them, but since you can organize them it also kind of makes sense to call them bookmarks.

But I find the current approach confusing, and I would rather they choose either bookmarks or history. I would put the menu item in the History menu, and add a "Top Sites" button in the normal menu bar (along side back/forward and home).

this might be a local thing, but I've noticed that after installing, my Msn Messneger wont let me type in the box after I've written something unless I click it again..

I've tried re-installing messenger but no help... guess I ought to re-install safari

*sigh*

omg...SAME HERE!!!! So annoying.

Sorry I am not going to read over 1,000 posts lol.

Here are my thoughts:

1) I really like it, and YES is is much more snappy :)

2) They took out web clips by default, you have to add the button back in customize toolbar and you can't right click the top of the window to customize the toolbar, it is only accessible from the drop down menu now. Not a big deal, I just think it should be there by default as it was a big feature in Leopard and Safari 3.

3) I love the new tabs and everything so far, but I was really hoping for more multi-touch like rotate fingers to switch tabs & 3 finger swipe up or down to go to the top or bottom of a page like in the FireFox Beta. Those gestures are KILLER! I can't stand scrolling to the tops of pages now after touching the status bar in Mobile Safari on the iPhone and zipping right back to the top.

4) Other than that, I really want back the aqua loading bar in the address field instead of the little refresh loading circle. It should be the aqua bar in the address field still and when a page is loading the refresh button should turn into a stop X button like before and in Mobile Safari! The loading circle gives you know indication of what percentage the page is loaded. If they wanted to make it flat blue instead of aqua to match the new "marble" theme then fine, but I like that much better!

P.S. Does this mean that each tab runs separate processes now??? That would be a nice addition to only crash a tab instead of the entire browser!

P.P.S. This was a great surprise for today :) Thanks Apple :)

Oops, I think I somehow double posted. Sorry mod.

Yeah the thing with Messenger is weird. For me it just drops focus from the text field when you press enter, but it's still annoying, and such an odd connection.
