How the heck can you miss the Refresh button?!?! I've been using this thing for almost 24 hours now, with both my trackpad AND mighty mouse, and i've NOT ONCE it the RSS button...
Also, the new tabs make SO MUCH more sense as you gain a TON of extra space in the browsing area, and you get to use space in the bar that otherwise would just be an empty bar except for the website title in the middle.
This is a GREAT update to Safari, and it's making more responsive and better looking IMHO. The blue bar...meh, I haven't even noticed it not being there, really, as the little spinning wheel works just fine for me. The only thing i would do different is slightly change the color of the current tab, so you can easily differentiate from the others.

I never criticized tabs by the way. I have no problem with the tabs.

You obviously have me confused with some other person you wanted to contradict! LOL

And if you ever traveled in your life and had to use iffy WIFI connections, you'd know why the blue progress bar makes a difference. It lets you know when the progress has DIED! The spinning beach ball just laughs and spins at you forever making an ass of you for waiting so long! LOL

I have a bookmark question. All my bookmarks are in folders in the bookmark menu. The only way I see them is to turn on the menu bar. When I click on bookmarks, I see the bookmark menu, but no luck seeing the folders or going into them. Anyone else not see folders in the bookmark menu?

... one thing that is bugging me is the small plus, (add a new tab) on the top right. I think that it could be cleaner with the tab/bar ending at the corner, and to me, it makes more sense to have it on the left side of the tabs when the control buttons are there. This would mirror how the Windows version functions, (which works well), to OS X. With some good use and getting use to I find most other functions to work well. Top sites could lose a bit of it's curve but otherwise, it is a very good concept.

and zoom in and out on the trackpad is UBER-sensitive now - unusable.

Definitely agree with this, id personally love to be able to turn it off completely!

Im finding it way way faster, the only problem for me is that my bank doesnt support it yet for online banking, but they normally update that within a few days.

Yes, I agree the trackpad zooming needs some refining. But did you know you can use Cmd - "+" and Cmd - "-" to do the zooming as well?

I didnt, thank you, trying to get to my usual zoom level was proving problematic.

Mobile me website, is so much faster now for me.

Fast my ass. Safari 4 is slow as hell so far.

Bookmarks? Those in files don't even open. That sucks. And CoverFlow for bookmarks does nothing but slow my search down. Why would I scan pictures of web pages as opposed to just scanning the list? I hate it. Scanning a list is fffaaaaaaaaaarrr faster than scanning images. I have like 200 bookmarks... you think I wanna scan through that many images while I try to find my desired site? WTF? CoverFlow in bookmarks is absolutely retarded. I'll just shrink the window down so it doesn't show any Covers.
[/shakes head in disgust] Seriously... that is RETARDED.

Trackpad pinching / zooming is a nightmare. Never in my life have I ever wanted to zoom in on a web page, anyway. Can't quite figure out why zooming is even necessary away from my entire screen... which I can do anyway.

I've only had this browser for a few hours and I'm already pissed I downloaded it so soon.

One thing about beta that frustrates the hell out of me is that all of the problems I encounter... everyone encounters... which makes me wonder- Why the hell is this the beta? Did you not know these problems existed before?

The purpose of launching a Beta is to find bugs not found in the lab. Can you honestly tell me you didn't find these bugs in the lab?

Fricking marketing ruins everything.

And you wonder why they call us FanBoys when we have to defend ourselves against non-mac users who pop in every time a 'new' product is launched.

Get your product stable... then do a beta... dumbasses. This is worse than Google Chrome when it launched it's beta and couldn't play any video.

I'm bummed. Should have waited until it worked... and until CoverFlow was removed.

*edit

Oh wait... Safari 4 doesn't play CNN videos!!!

WTF is wrong with you people? (Don't even ask me to search for other videos that do or don't play. YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS!!!)

Uninstalling Safari 4.

About issues with Safari 4.0 and Gmail

I had this issue to it really sucks you login to Gmail and just get a blank page with nothing happens.

So far its about the "https" access on Gmail, if you use regular http:.. Gmail it works fine.

(If you have, as me, set up "always use http" on settings you have to use another browser to disable this funktion, than login regular on http:)

that does it for me at least.

Wired on that is that all other kinds of https Sites like online Banking and so on are working fine.

Dont know why that occurs but it does, once i got gmail https on Safari 4 to work, it was after a long time using Safari, dont know why either.

Hope that issu is gonna be resolved soon.
(but its just a Beta, and i also miss Gears for 4.0, every time i try to use Gmail offline it asks me to "upgrade" gears even if i already got the newest version)

best
Ole

I really wish Safari's password/username auto fill feature was more like Firefox's requiring a master password to autofill stuff. This is a main reason I tend to use FF.

Get 1Password. It works on all browsers so passwords can be transparent and saves a lot of other good wallet info, plus sync to your iPhone. I thought I didn't need it either, but after using it, I can't live without it. It's nice to have it generate strong passwords for important sites, but if I NEED to type them in manually while I'm out, I have the iPhone app that I can pull them up on.

Oh wait . . . CNN videos work fine for me.

This Safari beta is noticeably faster than the previous stable release. I'm quite pleased with the performance.

Which makes me wonder what else in your post is just ignorance or an isolated issue on YOUR end.

The only issue I've encountered with this beta is that Hotmail only semi-works, but I can still view my messages.

And if your post referred to Safari for Windows . . . oh well . . . wrong forum.

You actually did a good job at sounding like a dumbass. The beta has been good for me so far, and you can't expect so much from a beta. Some betas are truly awful, others aren't too bad.

Also, CNN videos work for me, on both Windows and Mac, so it must be a problem on your behalf.

Wow, Safari 4 is basically Google Chrome.
I'm not complaining. :)

Wow that sounds out-of-order stacking.

WebKit/Safari is the parent to the child, Chrome.

The HIG changes at Apple most certainly don't wait on other companies input. I know. I worked there. And the same approach from NeXT [where I worked] moved over to Apple.

So far Safari has been fine, but i have noticed that MSN messenger has now stopped working properly. For some reason, or at least its quite a coincidence that when ever i type something and then press enter to send the message, the window is unselected, and i have to keep on reclicking on the window and YES, that is a huge pain in the back side since you are unable to type that quickly.

has anyone else had this problem?

tabs are like that so you can pull them off to make new windows etc, a much friendlier user experience!

I agree. It does make this process a lot easier.

When using the old tabs, they would always switch the order when I wanted to drag a tab into a new window. Now, you just hold on to the little grab corner and it works every time.

Wow that sounds out-of-order stacking.

family tree isn't exactly how you compare the features. webkit doesn't include the tab on top setting, nor more visited list on new tab. its merely a layout engine

you need to separate the browser engine and browser feature sets. not to mention chrome has its own js engine.

chrome has tab on top first, and has most-visited website earlier than safari 4.

Ok, I was using Safari 3 and a long time ago, I did a google search in which I found that if I entered a simple command line, it would clear my history every time I closed out Safari.

Now, I just downloaded Safari 4 and the command line I entered a long time ago still remains and is doing its job (clearing the history as soon as I exit Safari), but I want to remove the command line so it remembers my history (for the purposes of Top Sites).

For the life of me, I can't find what the command line I entered was and where I placed it so I can remove it.

Please, any of you programmers or expert google searchers know how to assist?

Thanks

I believe I found my answer. Below is for anyone else who may be interested...or not.

(1) In Safari go to History>Clear History
(2) Close Safari
(3) Go to Home>Library>Safari
(4) Get Info on the File History.plist
a) Change Ownerships & Permissions to Read Only
b) Check the locked tab on top
c) Click on the little lock icon on the bottom

Safari will erase the history every time you close the app.

If you don't think Safari 4 is fast then you are having an isolated problem.

It is BLAZING fast when compared to the old (current) Safari and FF3.

My personal sum-up after several hours of serious ;-) browsing with Safari Beta 4: A landmark in the internet history! The fastest and stablest browser ever. NOT ONE SINGLE CRASH! Even on dubious and flash loaded sites.

I am so happy with this update. I would now have to call Safari "the fastest browser in the world" for real this time. It also has more features than any other browser I know of.

Yes. Absolutely. I love all the new features (good work, Apple), just missing the blue progress bar. The terminal trick to get it again has disadvantages.

The only real drawback is that the flash editor at wordpress.com has to be serviced. I wrote about that here.

Workaround: Coding in HTML or...

Opera has the best full screen functionality of any browser. So good in fact that I actually used it as part of a kiosk interfact system that I wrote.

...fortunately I've found an old Opera version on my HD. I've upgraded it within seconds to v9.63 and voilà! Wordpress editing okay! (Better than going back and downgrading to old Safari imho.)

just tried to reinstall Safari 4, still has major conflicts on my Macbook..

booooo.. looks like I will have to wait for a future build. Before then, back to my Safari 4 Developer preview
