a question that hasn't actually been asked yet!

Will my bookmarks and settings convert to 4 automatically from 3? I'm thinking about trying this beta.

Thanks.

I find the interface to be much more modern... kind of takes cues from chrome dont you think..

i found it to be much snappier than the previous version but as other people noted out i want to have something indicating the loading status of the page. It should be an important part of the human interface guidelines that thing...

apart from that I will stick to Safari 4

It's kinda weird seeing so many features in Safari. I'm used to it being a simple and light browser. I'm not sure how to feel about this one--they really did take a lot of features from other browsers, but I guess they needed to catch up. Cover Flow seems a bit out of place and unnecessary, but at least you get a choice to use it or not

I also agree that we should be able to put icons on our Top Sites to clean things up.

Also, Facebook doesn't make Safari beachball and crash anymore :)

how do i download all of my past historys when i view my history? I have a ton of older pages that are not showing it in cover flow.

Safari probably just doesn't go out of its way to reload all the pages in your history (because let's face it, that's an assload of pages to pull down), but only caches thumbnails for pages it's visited since the 4.0 beta was installed. You'll notice that if you click on any of your history items to revisit them, there's a thumbnail waiting for you when you view your history again. That's my theory anyway. :)

Yes, I definitely have not noticed a speed increase. It actually seems significantly slower to me!

and zoom in and out on the trackpad is UBER-sensitive now - unusable.

It's competition. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Adobe, etc. all copy ideas from one another. This is a good thing, as in the end, we as consumers win by getting better products are more competitive prices.

True. It's just funny to see how lightly it is taken over here when Apple "borrows" stuff from someone else, but when someone else "borrows" something from Apple all the hell brakes loose. :D

I don't understand you people. There's nothing to back up your claim and you have no cognitive reason for hating where tabs are. Is it really that big of a deal?

Geesh

I think its mostly down to familiarity, but I'd argue that there is a cognitive reason.

Before, tabs were as big as they needed to be, and read from left to right, as per standard (western) reading convention. If you had two or three tabs open, this took up far less space than it does now.

If you have two tabs open now, you have to look much further across to see it. Of course, its not that big a deal, but it was the attention to detail, and simplicity of design that made love Safari in the first place.

This just seems like a slight step backwards. From there, you could go the other way - shrink them back down to the left, and tuck them in underneath, making more efficient use if the space, IMO.

As it is, I'll probably stick with the new ones, on the assumption that if I don't I'd lose the 'new tab' button?

Am I the only one?

- Cover Flow, to make searching web history or bookmarks as fun and easy as paging through album art in iTunes
.............

WTH??? CoverFlow just plain sux. Nothing more, nothing less. And I don't need Safari to have caches of visited Websites on my machine.

I hate CoverFlow. It's just plain BS. Especially if you consider websites, that offer dynamically generated content.

UI is pretty much a copy of Chrome, the way the tabs are and such. The 3D look of Top sites is just silly IMO.

Yeah - I'm not convinced either - Expose was gimmicky, bit also useful compared to, say, flip3D in Vista. So I think I'd prefer the top sites without the curved look, and the web address to appear over them, rather than down at the bottom, as per Expose.

Ok two things... Can I get a refresh button? Is anyone else experiencing horribly slow downloads?

Otherwise, I like the look and feel of it.

2 things...

If you get slow downloads, reset Safari, quit Safari, repair Disk permissions w/ Disk Utility, then reboot your Mac, that solved that problem for me.

Also, obviously the refresh button is a COMPLETE MISTAKE, it's too small and in a bad place and it's too easy to hit RSS by accident and there's so little toolbar expansion functionality in this beta. I'm very disappointed about that.

GOTTA FIX THAT ONE APPLE, AND BRING BACK SNAPBACK TOO!

It's slower, sloppier, and screwed up my Unit Converter widget (I have no clue how). Looks like I am going back to 3.2.1 until this gets an official release or until I get Snow Leopard. Happy beta testing everyone, I'm out.

I don't use the snapback feature but I think someone mentioned earlier in this thread that it's in the google search bar and under history in the toolbar menu.

How the heck can you miss the Refresh button?!?! I've been using this thing for almost 24 hours now, with both my trackpad AND mighty mouse, and i've NOT ONCE it the RSS button...
Also, the new tabs make SO MUCH more sense as you gain a TON of extra space in the browsing area, and you get to use space in the bar that otherwise would just be an empty bar except for the website title in the middle.
This is a GREAT update to Safari, and it's making more responsive and better looking IMHO. The blue bar...meh, I haven't even noticed it not being there, really, as the little spinning wheel works just fine for me. The only thing i would do different is slightly change the color of the current tab, so you can easily differentiate from the others.

I hate ANY upgrade that REMOVES functionality & customization while pretending to be an upgrade. It was the reason I still to this day criticize Leopard's dock.

I love the speed of Safari 4, I WANT to love it overall, but I just can't.
I can't do the same things I used to do as easily, it's a game changer for me.

Just PLEASE put back COMMAND-OPTION-P for SNAPBACK APPLE! Geez.

And I want more toolbar customization and the ability to have a REAL STOP/RELOAD button, not the one that is basically next to RSS and you constantly click on RSS by mistake. grrrrrrrrrrr

And a blue progress bar option without me having to hack the program and make it more buggy than it already is.

If I have to use the TERMINAL program to fix something, than it's APPLE's MISTAKE in my opinion, because I'm not a person who uses the Terminal program very much if ever nor do I want to. I'm an end user.

These are easy fixes Apple, In the words of Nike, JUST DO IT!

Thanks in advance. :)

What good is the Snapback feature in the Google bar if I used it in the main URL bar?

GEEZ! Do people not get this big change?

You can't just easily click BACK to the main page of the website you've been plowing through.

I'm starting to think the fanboys are ganging up on me here, its kinda obvious, don't ya think?

I want this fixed, its constructive criticism and I think its a problem since Apple ADVERTISES THIS DAMN PROGRESS thing on their WEBSITE!

Lol... it's not the fanboys.
Just that i think most of us have NEVER used that feature before..

Oh, I don't think Apple can hear you all the way from Cupertino! You prolly need to yell a little louder with the CAPS LOCK... AND if you keep repeating the same posts, maybe somebody from Apple will finally notice it and you'll have your demands met!
:p
