Sorry, it was Opera that had it first.
So, clevin, will you agree that Safari 4 is much improved?
there might be a description error. opera's tab isn't replacing the title bar.
I agree safari 4 is much improved over safari 3, with several very handy bright spot:
1. search suggestion, its very nice feature and hope people begin to enjoy it.
2. most visited list, this is an incredibly useful feature that Im pleased the safari users can finally enjoy, since most people visit limited number of websites frequently, this in many situations can replace urlbar, bookmark, and history list.
3. full page zoom, its a great feature that should be emphasized because it helps reading at no cost of page structure. with mac's font (personal opinion), it would help alot.
4. usability improve: urlbar search+history search. it accelerate the process of finding previously visited, desired websites
I took a quick glance through 150 features of safari on apple.com. needless to say, I found many features that I previously criticized being lacking. Its always good to see them getting addressed (like anti-phishing, etc).
I do have mixed feeling about the tab on top. which saves the viewing space. But causes many other usability concerns. If it were to stay, it should be improved.
and I do not have any opinion for cover flow, the eye candy doesn't really help the surfing experience.
I do want to say, I have no problem with anybody playing catching up, as I think most new features in safari 4b are derived from existing products from other browser makers. But I do have problem with apple blatantly claiming safari is the most "innovative browser" in face of this update.
I also want to re-iterate the lacking of other features in safari, Im sure there will be people claiming they are not important, but whatever.
1. don't open "safe download" by default.
2. add a urlbar drop down list
3. add search engine discovery
4. use notification bar rather than pop for password remembering
5. allow multiple username/password remember by default
6. add urlbar "i feel lucky" function.
7. open extension system
8. download resume function
9. partial update
10. some kind of mouse gesture
11. keep improving single window mode.
12. keep improving urlbar search function, add multiple keyword matching
13. FAYT
14. allow downloaded files into different folders by default
there are more to the list, or just take a sincere look at others.
All in all, a significant step in the right direction.
So clevin, 'splain to me why it matters who had it first again? I think it's safe to say that most additional features that any browser adds was in Opera first.
it doesn't matter to me at all, but it does seems to matter for some people who like to analyze
who "copied" who.
