I've installed Safari 4 today (using Win XP), and I was dissappointed because I'm used to that "mac look" that I had with Safari 3.. this "windows version" of Safari 4 I really don't like..

So, does anyone knows.. is there a possibility to have a "normal" Safari look in Windows?

I agree. It does make this process a lot easier.

When using the old tabs, they would always switch the order when I wanted to drag a tab into a new window. Now, you just hold on to the little grab corner and it works every time.

But this feature has nothing to do with the new position of the tabs at the top of the window. They could have made the bottom right corner of the old tabs in Safari 3 grab-able and we would have had the same functionality but a much more coherent user interface.

Imagine how brutal it will be if lots of different apps start to implement this new tab system. Unless every window is stretched full screen and hiding all other windows, it's going to be a crazy mess.

Open two safari windows with multiple tabs and you'll see what i mean. You have to spend all these extra brain cycles just trying to make sense of the tabs.

I've downloaded and have been using it for about an hour now & to be honest it seems much slower than III. Hopefully with the bugs ironed out and the whole thing stabilized it'll be much better, but for now I'm not overly impressed with IV.

Safari 4 locked up my Mac

Downloaded it, used it and liked it, but then it locked up my whole computer, so I uninstalled it. I can't remember what I was doing, but I got a non-ending beach ball, so I tried to force quit it, and it wouldn't even force quit. Tried and waited several times, and even tried restarting, but since it was still hung up I had to hold the power button to shut the computer down.

I'm back on Safari 3.2.1 now.

The File menu?
Hey it's a gift that you get what you get (If you're on a PC) beggers can't be choosers.

Incidentally, beggars bloody well can be choosers: there's Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera, Avant Browser, Konqueror, Lynx, Google Chrome, Maxthon, Flock, Arachne, Epiphany, K-Meleon, AOL Explorer ...

Here's another reason not use Safari 4: the high-pitched whine from my otherwise silent Mac mini.

I dont have the "top sites" view option how do you get it?
Top sites is available from your bookmark bar. Top left of the screen, under the left/right arrow buttons, there are two buttons. The first looks like a book - that's the bookmarks button. The second looks like a grid (4x3) of black boxes. That's the Top Sites button.
Unhide the bookmark bar if you have it hidden (see View menu).
Or just click History > Show Top Sites
tabs are like that so you can pull them off to make new windows etc, a much friendlier user experience!
You could pull tabs off to new windows in Safari 3, too. That's not why the tabs have been moved to the top. You can move them back, if you prefer the old way. The method has been posted numerous times in this thread.

I was trying out Safari 4 on the Acid3 test and got this: "kungfudeathgrip was null."

There's no need to shout! Using all bold font won't improve any answers.
Go to Safari > Preferences > Appearance and check "Display images when the page opens"

Here's a question: I don't know if I've missed something, but if I'm adding a bookmark and click the drop-down to select which folder I want to choose, it expands all folders and sub-folders into a very long list, making it harder to find the folder I want. This didn't happen with Safari 3. Any way to change the default to not expand all folders?

I think it's a minor bug / annoying feature. I can't find any option about it anywhere.

Easily the fastest browser I've ever used. I can see why they dropped the progress bar - if you have any sort of decent broadband connection pages load instantly.

The new tabs on top is a bit weird and takes a bit of getting used, mainly because it's new. Conceptually I think it makes more sense than having tabs below as now the tab contains the address and the page.

My only gripe is when you have the tab nearest the left open the traffic light buttons appear too high up because of the gap between the back and forward buttons is larger than in Safari 3. I prefer the look when you have any other tab open and the traffic light buttons are on the darker grey background. Also it would be more consistent if they were always like that. Anyone else notice that?

Other than that it's my new favourite browser.

family tree isn't exactly how you compare the features. webkit doesn't include the tab on top setting, nor more visited list on new tab. its merely a layout engine

you need to separate the browser engine and browser feature sets. not to mention chrome has its own js engine.

chrome has tab on top first, and has most-visited website earlier than safari 4.

What I meant was quit complaining about what you get with Safari and move on, whether that means just suck it up or go to a different browser. I really don't care.

What good is the Snapback feature in the Google bar if I used it in the main URL bar?

GEEZ! Do people not get this big change?

You can't just easily click BACK to the main page of the website you've been plowing through.

I'm starting to think the fanboys are ganging up on me here, its kinda obvious, don't ya think?

I want this fixed, its constructive criticism and I think its a problem since Apple ADVERTISES THIS DAMN PROGRESS thing on their WEBSITE!

How old are you? You sound immature.

I'm a fanboy because I admitted that I don't use the snapback feature but still took the time to try and help you? You need to lay off the caffeine/drugs. You're a little bit amped.

You can use the Snapback feature under History (since you use the main bar) and wait until the final version arrives. You do remember that this is a beta, don't you?

Unable to run Safari 4 on PowerMac G5

Has anyone had any problems with Safari 4 not running on a G5 PPC? When I install the beta, everything seems to be fine, but when I try and run it, it crashes. Anyone one know why this might be happening?

Before anyone asks, I do not have any Safari "hacks" installed.

This is great. I can't download the beta. Everytime I click download it just reloads the download page.

Sorry, it was Opera that had it first.

So, clevin, will you agree that Safari 4 is much improved?

there might be a description error. opera's tab isn't replacing the title bar.

I agree safari 4 is much improved over safari 3, with several very handy bright spot:

1. search suggestion, its very nice feature and hope people begin to enjoy it.

2. most visited list, this is an incredibly useful feature that Im pleased the safari users can finally enjoy, since most people visit limited number of websites frequently, this in many situations can replace urlbar, bookmark, and history list.

3. full page zoom, its a great feature that should be emphasized because it helps reading at no cost of page structure. with mac's font (personal opinion), it would help alot.

4. usability improve: urlbar search+history search. it accelerate the process of finding previously visited, desired websites

I took a quick glance through 150 features of safari on apple.com. needless to say, I found many features that I previously criticized being lacking. Its always good to see them getting addressed (like anti-phishing, etc).

I do have mixed feeling about the tab on top. which saves the viewing space. But causes many other usability concerns. If it were to stay, it should be improved.

and I do not have any opinion for cover flow, the eye candy doesn't really help the surfing experience.

I do want to say, I have no problem with anybody playing catching up, as I think most new features in safari 4b are derived from existing products from other browser makers. But I do have problem with apple blatantly claiming safari is the most "innovative browser" in face of this update.

I also want to re-iterate the lacking of other features in safari, Im sure there will be people claiming they are not important, but whatever.

1. don't open "safe download" by default.
2. add a urlbar drop down list
3. add search engine discovery
4. use notification bar rather than pop for password remembering
5. allow multiple username/password remember by default
6. add urlbar "i feel lucky" function.
7. open extension system
8. download resume function
9. partial update
10. some kind of mouse gesture
11. keep improving single window mode.
12. keep improving urlbar search function, add multiple keyword matching
13. FAYT
14. allow downloaded files into different folders by default

there are more to the list, or just take a sincere look at others.

All in all, a significant step in the right direction.

So clevin, 'splain to me why it matters who had it first again? I think it's safe to say that most additional features that any browser adds was in Opera first.

it doesn't matter to me at all, but it does seems to matter for some people who like to analyze who "copied" who.
