The Beta so far is awesome, loving the whole chrome-like thing, with top sites, and the tabs on top.

But one thing apple seriously needs to fix is ... animated gifs. I'm on a lot of forums from time to time, and some people love to use animated gifs in these forums, which seriously just nukes the whole browser. On 3 it just made the gifs, slow and unwatchable, where as now ... beach ball for 30s to a minute. Why can't this just be like firefox, where you could have like 30 gifs lined up in a row on the browser, and it all looks fine!

Well, I've just uninstalled Safari 4. I like the direction it's going, but there are a few bugs that make it unworkable for me for day-to-day use:
  1. I can't add images to posts in this forum. Clicking the "Choose File" does nothing in Safari 4. This is a deal-breaker for me, since I use screen capture clips to illustrate answers frequently.
  2. In Safari 3, if I just start typing while on a website, it automatically searches the page for what I type, without having to use Command-F first. I use that feature a lot. In Safari 4, typing even one character causes Safari to lock up and I have to Force Quit. This happens even if I accidentally press a key while on a site. Not good.
  3. Force Quitting also loses all my cookies, which creates a hassle, for example, when viewing my New Subscribed Threads to see which ones have new posts.
  4. Top Sites is nice, but it doesn't always show the star in the upper corner, indicating that a site has changed since the last visit, even though it has definitely changed. In that regard, it's not helpful for checking which sites to revisit.
  5. I had already modified S4 to put the tabs back in the old position, since trying to click a tab on top frequently only moved the window. It's a pain to have to click 2 or 3 times to select a tab when you're in a hurry.

None of these are huge problems, but enough that I don't want to deal with them on a daily basis. I've reported them all as bugs, so I'll wait to see what updates come out and I'll try it again.

I've installed Safari 4 today (using Win XP), and I was dissappointed because I'm used to that "mac look" that I had with Safari 3.. this "windows version" of Safari 4 I really don't like..

So, does anyone knows.. is there a possibility to have a "normal" Safari look in Windows?

Go into preferences and turn on font smoothing.

im far to used to control/zoom to use the pinching.

Also, i am forcing my self to used the tabs on top feature for a few days, before i possibly use the tweak to get the tabs in their old position. But i figure i could atleast give it a shot before i give up.

Google Docs?!

The tabs may drive me crazy or I may learn to love them but one thing is certain I cannot get Google Docs to load!

Is anyone else having this problem? I use Google Docs a lot and was really hoping S4 would IMPROVE compatibility but instead going to Google Docs I just get a completely blank page. Gmail works, Analytics works, but no gDocs.

Any suggestions?

havent had a lot of time to test it but automator actions (at least download urls) stopped working for me and caused automator to crash.

Safari 4 fixed Apple on my PowerBook. It would not work in Safari 3. It would not load. I love the zoom thing as I find the text too big on websites. I wish resolution independence worked as well as the zoom feature in Safari. I would like to have 1680*1050 on 15 inch and I can in a web browser now!

A "normal" Safari look in Windows is not the Mac look, it was out of place. If you're using Windows your software should have the "Windows Look". It looks retarded to have the Mac look in a Windows environment.

Two questions:

What does the star mean surrounded by blue in the top sites section? It disappears after you click on the page.

Can I move the tabs bar back? I find it visually jarring to have the tabs floating at the top edge of the window..the window needs a border for separation's sake from other open windows..if you have the safari window in front of another window title from any other app, it looks like the tabs could belong to that other app window (I know that wording probably doesn't make any sense).

Other than that, it really does seem faster!

The star surrounded by blue in the corner of the thumbnail in the Top Sites section means that page has been updated since the last time you read/accessed it. I love this feature. The ability to pop open top sites and see which three of my top sites has new content means I don't have to open the other 6. Yes, RSS feeds would eliminate this problem for some of them, but not all.

There is a way to go back to the Safari 3 tab bar. Take a look at MacWorld's First Look: Safari 4 beta, it's got a link to how to do that.

It's kind of jarring visually, I admit, but I do like the extra screen space having the tabs at the top of the window gives me (MacBookPro). We'll see if I get used to it.

That would be great if it actually worked! I found that half of my Top Sites would change, but the star wouldn't appear, indicating a change. Very inconsistent. And they were really obscure sites like iGoogle.com, Amazon.com, iMDB.com.... they need to do some more work to get the bugs out of that feature.

to choose what is in the Top Sites section

  1. Reset Top Sites and history
  2. visit each site you want to show up twice
  3. click edit in Top Sites
  4. rearange sites and pin them
  5. set size where only thye sites you want show

Then you have only the sites you want in Top Sites

Not typing in any search bar or form. For example, I can go to www.cnn.com and, without touching the mouse, just type "Obama" and it finds all occurrences of that word on the page, just as if I had pressed Control-F first, except I don't have to do that. Works in Safari 3, doesn't work in Safari 4.

Doesn't work all the time. For example, I would click my iGoogle page 20 or 30 times, but it never appeared on the Top Sites list. I had to manually add it by dragging from the address bar of one window into the Top Sites view in another window.

Bookmark Google

I have just realised that when you try to bookmark google... it comes up with this message... ??

Safari 4 has borked a lot of javascript pages. Especially ones that have popup windows. My university login requires a popup window (small one) so I can enter my password, but it is not messed up.

Did you reset your history and Top Sites? It worked for me. Everything I want is there and nothing else. It did help that I had exactly 6 sites I wanted there though

Yes, reset both several times and reset Safari, as well. With a fresh reset, I could visit my iGoogle site 20 times and it wouldn't appear on Top Sites, but sites such as Facebook, where I NEVER go, did appear. Like I said, it works sometimes, but not consistently.

You know I never knew S3 did that. My install of S4 isn't bombing out on me when I try "free" typing though. So I am not too sure why yours would be.

I didn't even think to try pinch to zoom - man is that fast. And my trackpad is set to quite slow 'scrolling speed', and changing that doesn't seem to affect it. As it is, it's really pretty useless that it is supported.

Re all of the CLI lines for hidden preferences, I find it quite funny that exactly the same thing happened when iTunes 8 came out. We all just wanted it back the way it was :). So far this time though I haven't seen it documented for how to make those changes on Windows - it would certainly be my browser of choice there as well if I could.

Yep, me too. I didn't want to be forced to see the genre in my browsing window and the arrows had to go. I actually like the tabs at the top after using them for a few days and killed the stupid add bookmarks button. I even got my blue loading thing back.

I noticed enabling the older tabs was actually kinda buggy too.

Wow, already so many posts.

Love it - especially "top sites" and the coverflow. Tried it in my new Dell laptop in XP for work (how ironic).

Now, all Apple needs is iWork and iLife for Windows - not to mention OS X for any manufacturer... :D

You must have something special installed on your Mac to make it do that. I have Safari 3 on two Macs in my house and I cannot look for keywords on any website without pressing Command-F. Apple advertised it as the only way to do word searches is through Command-F.
I have Safari 4 on my Macbook Air and it works the same way so you must have something special installed. Besides it would be annoying if after you surf to a website and accidentally press keys that it would start doing word searches. Check your installed haxies. Safari is not suppose to do what you say it does.

I did some more searching and now recall how I did that. I use SafariStand, which has as one of the options:

So I'm guessing there's something incompatible between SafariStand and Safari 4. I can't give up SafariStand, since it also provides all my great right-click quick searches, that I use constantly:

Definately like the tabs at the top of Safari. it safe space for browsing especially when using a Mac Book 13". Additional, I like the speed..
