Well, obviously there're tons of these now but if you're looking for one that's very fast (and attractive) try lightOn: http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/lighton/id379854699?mt=8

It doesn't have any unnecessary buttons, it just starts the LED as soon as the app opens (with fast app switching it's super, super fast).

Disclaimer: I made it, but I do think it's the most attractive and I personally favour the instant switch on approach.

Oh boy, it's the second generation flashlight gold rush crap fest... Thousands of developers were really thinking they were the only ones coming up with this? And they're still proud of their five lines of code?

It wasn't an app

As this weekend proved, even the App Store can host Apps from scammers.

Wrong. The scammer phished peoples' iTunes logins and passwords. He then logged into those accounts and bought copies of iBooks that he himself published (infringing on copyrights, BTW.)

The iTunes Store wasn't hacked, and it wasn't an app.

Agree. I'll download just one LED flashlight app, and only if it's free. I'll just wait and see for a while...

The question should be: When does Apple finally drop their completely useless approval process and when will they finally be forced to open their devices to competing AppStores?

It should be up to the customer to decide whether an application is acceptable or not. End of story.

Will you never stop? Go buy an Android, it better meets your requirements.

It should up to the users, you're right, but given that millions of people buy the product and are fantastically happy with it, it would suggest that you are wrong or misguided in product desire. You desire Apple and deride them for not making the product to suit *your* needs - get over it and go elsewhere. Thanks to the concept of competition, there are many alternatives out there.

Or perhaps, you just like complaining about things that will never change??

Never said it was hacked or an app did the hacking.

I said a scammer used the AppStore to scam people. Which is what he did.

So even with Apple's safeguards, there's still ways to scam people no matter how tightly you try to control things.

Never. Any other stupid questions?

Reminds me of a South Park where Mr. Garrison says, "No such thing as stupid questions, just stupid people." :D

You're right, the competing app stores will never be allowed - why would they when this one is so incredibly successful and is one of the major USPs for all Apple iOS devices?

Certainly not useless, their system obviously has its advantages along with its disadvantages. I think, as the creators of the iPhone, they should be able to decide how it should be used. If you don't like it, find another phone that matches your needs or cope with it. If no other phone matches your needs then it's unfortunate. Only an opinion but I'm perfectly happy with how they work. This isn't just an Apple thing, I just think it's more respectful to the creators to use their products as they envisioned. I'm aware some of that probably sounds daft but I don't really mind if other people think I'm wrong.

I agree bro, It's their product they did R&D for it and created it and their rules. And if someone doesn't like it they can just create their own phone and app store. :)

This has got to be the best looking one I've seen so far:

http://itunes.apple.com/app/led-light-for-iphone-4-free/id379753015?mt=8

I like that! And free. (Are there ads?)

Does the thingy at the bottom change the strobe speed? It looks draggable. It would be neat to have a really fast strobe for mind-bending (battery-sucking) fun!

Roundup of some others at AppShopper:

(None of those grab me, but instant-on upon launch sounds like a nice feature.)

Gotta love the guy who advertises his own paid app as "attractive"..

Alternative App Store

I'd just like to add to the conversation that you can install HTML5 web apps to the iPhone. I realise this is currently quite a limited environment to produce apps in but it is certainly possible to create some useable apps in this manor and bypass the app store. This option should increase in capability over time as well.

Since when is an LED light a significant battery drain? So stupid.

drain battery life?

Here's my stupid question of the day: Could a single LED drain the battery any faster than turning the whole screen on bright white? No battery warnings on the original flashlight app I've had since day 1..so just curious.

Good question: the screen has smaller lights, but more of them. Certainly faster than having the light AND the screen BOTH on, though. (So a flashlight app that could turn off the main screen—or allow you to sleep it—would be nice.)

Not all LEDs are alike. This isn’t just some little indicator—it’s high-power, like a flashlight (or, say, a camera-flash) and those do use up enough battery to matter. Someone who turned this on for an extended time to read by or something might find themselves without a phone eventually--so I don’t think the warning is such an awful thing to have. People sure are complaining about that warning :p

Wow. Apple must think we're all morons.

See above. They are always desperate to find something negative to say about Apple in every story...
