Yes, Apple played Netflix Originals strategy and added as many games as it can. But that diluted Apple Arcade with lower median gaming experience.

At this point, there are more than enough number of titles. Apple needs to focus on AAA quality games.

If only apple provided AAA quality tools to author games. Currently they dont even offer the ability to skin bones in their editor. If you add more than one animation per mesh, you can only preview the last one added. There isnt even a visual editor for shaders or at least syntax prediction.

to make AAA or even good quality indies, the best tools are provided by Epic and Unity, and if you are using those tools it makes no sense to tie your game down to apple arcade only.

most games on the app store are made with the tools provided for free by third parties not apple. Xcode is used for just codesigning the app. If apple wants exclusivity for goid games they have to pay big upfront or provide better tools to develop with.

xcode is nowhere near to par with even the open source indie competition.

seriously, there is a bug in the scenekit editor where if you delete more than one object at a time xcode crashes. I reported this over a year ago and it is still there.

Apple got the order wrong. You don’t get developers to make games for the Arcade first and also definitely not exclusively.

I want to play the new Ocean Horn 2 game. But I don’t want Arcade. And by not letting devs sell the game outside of Arcade they lose out on revenue and we don’t get to play the game. It’s no wonder why devs are hesitant.

Apple should let devs make and sell the games on their own first, then add their game to the Arcade separately to widen their reach to people who have not paid/played that game previously.
The problem with this approach is that Apple has been bankrolling the games that go onto Apple Arcade. As I understand it, the business model is that the developer gets paid for the game up-front, and that's it. Their agreements allow them to release for non-mobile platforms as well, but usually only after the Apple Arcade release.

For instance, the developers of Ocean Horn 2 arguably didn't lose out on any revenue, since Apple paid them a flat fee to build the game. They get the same amount of money regardless of how many people actually play the game through Apple Arcade. Plus, if they want to make more, they can still release the game on other platforms too — other than Android, of course.

It's not hard to imagine that many smaller indie developers are quite happy to get a big bag of money from Apple up-front instead of having to worry about things like sales and marketing for their games.

Of course, that same logic won't apply to many bigger game developers who already have the infrastructure and fan base in place, and know that they can make more money in the long term than Apple is willing to give them in the short term. On top of that, many of the AAA console games have signed exclusive agreements on the other side that preclude them from getting into bed with Apple, and of course the developers of the most popular freemium games are raking in so much money from IAPs that they're not about to sign on to Arcade for the relatively paltry money that Apple would offer them.

Arcade is so boring. I wish AAA developers would release on Mac platforms as well as Xbox ps5 PC etc. Apple doesn’t need to develop games, just support them on their platform

I have Apple One subscription, but I haven't found a single game worth playing from the Apple Arcade. Most of them are just cute graphics with nothing much going on.
That’s pretty much games in general. :) Except Bloodborne clones I guess, where “nothing much” can be replaced with “a lot of me dying”!

This new "trend" of this new disguised socialism wants you to rent anything and own nothing, but, fortunately, someone is understanding what's happening here.
It’s metered capitalism :) Instead of facing a potential endless quantity of In App Purchases, you (or anyone that is accessing your Apple Arcade) can never pay more than $4.99 a month. When you don’t want it anymore, you stop paying. However, I do understand how socialism today means “a thing I don’t like”.

Where are the FPS or 3rd person shooters with controller support? Those are what can show off what Apple Arcade can provide. Rehashing old games isn't cutting it.
But FPS’s and 3rd person shooters are essentially rehashing all the FPS’s and 3rd person shooters that came out before them!

Beside the fact that most of those games are not fun (but this is a personal opinion) I believe the main reason is that people (and when I say people I'm not only talking about the ones living in the USA) are fed up with subscriptions. This new "trend" of this new disguised socialism wants you to rent anything and own nothing, but, fortunately, someone is understanding what's happening here.

Long live Steam!
You do understand that being forced to depend on a class of capitalist rentiers is literally the opposite of socialism, right?

Apple Fitness and Apple Arcade are two questionable service examples. The first is ignoring the abundant fitness “free” content on YouTube. The second is a example of Apple avoidance of promoting game development on their OS platforms. It gives me no pleasure to point the latter out, but App Store is almost worthless for games against MacOS as game providers prefer alternative methods of providing games. Looking at the store on IPadOS shows thousands of games that you can buy, but it’s incredibly challenging to know what’s good with their top sellers information. Then you have cloud gaming not supported, so Apple needs to change things up to attract consumers. :)

There is nothing there to catch your attention. Where are the FPS or 3rd person shooters with controller support? Those are what can show off what Apple Arcade can provide. Rehashing old games isn't cutting it. However there is a cost associated with big games that some companies may not be willing to do since the return may not be there without enough recurring income.
Arcade’s primary selling point for most of it’s life has been that’s entirely composed of original games. It’s only with the April update that they’ve added any old games at all, and they’re still vastly outnumbered by original content. Compared to, say, GamePass which is almost entirely sequels and existing IP.

The service needs multiplayer battles or a MMORPG, Apple is just not a TV or game content company. Even Apple+ sucks, something that could be easily solved with a boatload of cash. Apple needs a new set of brains for these services.

So much hate on Apple Arcade, why? It's a quality service, and the perfect antidote to how mobile gaming was going (pay to win mechanics). I've enjoyed games like Grindstone, A Monster's Journey, The Last Campfire, and most recently Fantasian, which is a fully fledged, albeit unfinished, JRPG in the style of Final Fantasy 7.
This exactly. Apple arcade is fixing a problem that fremium games created. I am not a parent, but if I had kids I would consider this subscription a must. There is a lot of games that are kids friendly and most importantly don't have a gambling mechanic built in.

But the latest addition of game classics was a truly amazing addition for me. Just having solitaire, a free cell spin-off, sudoku etc. is great for the phone and kill time while waiting, or keep concentrated during long zoom meetings.

Sure those fill in the mobile game hole, and that what arcade is foremost, at least for now.

But even as a console kind of platform it has some interesting titles like Sayonara Wild Hearts, which has an incredible soundtrack and is more an experience than just a game. Then I enjoy also the Outlanders, Mini Motorways and Mini Metro.

But in the end there is room for growth, both in the mobile gaming space as in a more desktop style games. They could easily release a couple of big titles.

I love Apple but Arcade is the service I'm least satisfied with.
It's pretty cool if you play a lot on your iPhone (and I don't), but the service is very little usable on mac/apple TV.
I have it inside my Apple One Subscription, but I don't play on my phone and most games don't really play well with the M1 chip.

Here's an experiment - for everyone here who hates Arcade, could you name 5 games you've tried that didn't thrill you?

It's definitely not a service for everyone, but I feel like most people just don't manage to find the best games, which is natural given that it's a big pile of all new/exclusive titles. I think most everyone should try: Creaks, No Way Home, Nuts, What the Golf

There are a lot of gaming folks that only enjoy FPS’s and third person shooters, though. Arcade could have 20,000 games but if there’s not an FPS or third person shooter, these folks would say “there’s nothing there.”

Game development takes years, it’s hard to expect fresh new games every week or month. I do think Apple should look into acquiring studios, and better known franchises, like Microsoft and Sony are doing.

Even better— they need to create their own AAA game studio. They definitely have the resources to put together an in-house team. The only question is profitibility.

I would add: Tangle Tower, Shinseikai, Grindstone, Pilgrims, and Beyond a Steel Sky.

Agreed - if you only like FPS games, you're probably better off w/ something like GamePass for a more expensive monthly service.

Every action fan should at least try out the twin-stick shooters like No Way Home & Butter Royale. And Wonderbox for the user-generated levels that keep getting better every week.
