It works like that everywhere. Here in the UK, once you've run out your contract, you can go onto a "simplicity" contract (on o2). This gives you exactly the same minutes/texts as the £35 2 year contract, but it's on a month-to-month basis, and only costs £20 a month.

That extra £15 a month goes towards paying for the phone. Buying the phone sim-free gives you the option of just having the phone and going with different networks on PAYG as and when you want to.

That's how subsidies work. The phone costs £599 (32GB). You pay a higher contract price and it will cost less, because you pay for the phone as you go along.

I don't know what about my post was confusing to you. Obviously it DOESN'T work like that everywhere. Yes, AT&T has a pay as you go plan, but only certain devices are offerd. Everyone else must have a two year contract.

"AFTER YOUR SERVICE COMMITMENT, THIS AGREEMENT SHALL AUTOMATICALLY RENEW ON A MONTH-TO-MONTH BASIS UNTIL EITHER PARTY GIVES NOTICE PURSUANT TO THE TERMINATION PROVISION BELOW."

"Either party may terminate this Agreement at any time after your Service Commitment ends with thirty (30) days notice to the other party."

If you do not sign another two year agreement, your service ends.

My contract ended with AT&T... I just went onto month to month for almost a year... nobody ended my contract. They "MAY" terminate, does not mean they do... and the 30 days isn't 30 days after the 2 year agreement ends, it's just the notice you have to give the other party before the deal actually terminates.

Yeah, like they're going to tell a paying cutsomter to sign another contract or get lost . I've been with AT&T (Cingular before that) for about 9 years now. I've only had a contract for 4 of those years (1 iPhone @ 2 years, 2 other phones @ 1 year each). My experience is the same.

They'll even let you keep your current plan if you ask, it seems. My Dad's on a 750 minute plan that's $29.99 with his iPhone 3G.

But was his monthly bill $29.99 while he was under contract? That's great if you can stay month to month, but the gentleman from the UK stated that his month to month was cheaper and that it was the same everywhere. I was obviously unaware that you could continue on with out a contract, but I find it hard to believe that your bill would be less. If that is the case, great!

Voice was $30 both in and out of contract, then when he got the 3G he had to add the $30 data plan. Here in the US on AT&T it's not cheaper without a contract, it's the same price. The only benefit of being under contract is that you get a subsidized device in exchange for signing it. The plan prices are all the same either way.

That's great! It says "either party may terminate", which I took to mean that if you didn't end your service after your agreement was up, then AT&T would give you 30 days to either sign another contract or end your service. Their terms of service are quite vague and confusing.

Nope, you can do month to month with them... BUT the prices ARE the same... you don't get a discount for going month to month... as they would obviously prefer you in a contract.

With month to month just call them, give them notice your terminating, and switch to another carrier at will... which they don't like.

I normally buy a new phone every 2 years nowadays so I'm normally in a contract, but that doesn't bother me as I don't like other carriers.

That's the exact point I was trying to make. Thank you. I have never not had a contract but was fairly certain that the monthly bill would not change, as it apparantly does in the UK.

Exactly. Posters in the UK keep telling me that even though I got a phone for $299 instead of $599, that I end up paying the difference over my two year contract.

This thread ended up looking like no-one is bothered by the issue anymore, as long as they get something for free. Sad.

Why do people keep saying this? Your plan covers your usage, not the phone.

US phone contracts are funny. My phone bill goes down from $65 to $35 when my 2-yr contract ends in 2 weeks. Once contract is done the device is SIM-unlocked, so switching operator I get it down to $25. Here the cheapest unlimited data plan costs $6, normally $12. There are sensible legal issues concerning subsidized plans in Finland, I think in most of Europe.

Some of us rely on these phones for a business...

Not that I don't feel bad for all of you, but purchasing untested equipment that your business relies on the day (or month) they are available is a really bad idea.

I don't understand why they can't at least be consistent.

They are just reps after all. It must've been a hassle at Apple these few days, so no wonder all the clerks haven't had time to learn the new lines. And they are just people. How consistent are people anyways? Fe on this forum?

I received my email today regarding all my free bumpers... this is the one "I" will be using. White.

I removed some of the pertainent information. Nobody needs to be bothering this nice man, or referencing my case number.

I'll be receiving 6 of them (2 black, 2 white, 1 green, 1 pink) for the different phones on my plans.... I was more than pleased with the service I received.

I haven't received my email from apple care yet but the manager said he will personally be phoning me on Monday about a fix or the antenna issue.

Um..6? 1 black + 2 white + 1 green + 1 pink = 5

Fail

I gotta say, the inconsistency with the customer service response is poor and a fail in my opinion.

I called in on THURSDAY last week, after having five dropped calls and reading about this issue. It IS an issue, no question about it. I've said that since the first day.

CS response was, no issue, no replacement, no bumper, nothing.

Today, I called in again, I've continued to have this issue constantly, I've had about 10 dropped calls, usually when in a compromised area where I have 3-4 bars and WHEN I FORGET how to hold the phone correctly, and it drops without me thinking. I don't WANT TO HAVE TO REMEMBER how to hold my phone to make it work - that doesn't work for my phone calling experience.

WHILE on the call with apple (the initial IVR is one of the worst I have used in the past 10 years, I think it must be tellme and it is SOOO sensitive one cannot use it in a car or starbucks or anything) I was DROPPED.

SECOND CALL, I got to a CS rep. She kept saying she couldn't hear me, so I started to move around the way I was holding the phone and the CALL DROPPED.

THIRD CALL IN, I had the phone down on a table. I started the call by confirming my phone number so they could call me back. I had them pull up my case number from last THURSDAY. I told them I had over 10 dropped calls in that time, TWO of which were while WAITING for apple support.

The agent went away, talked with a supervisor, said that there were NO REPLACEMENT PHONES, that I could go BUY a bumper. I told him there were NO BUMPERS at any of the stores I went to and that I really didn't think it was right to make me BUY a 30$ product to make a 500$ phone work.

At this point, I'm going to just return it. I know personally this one at least doesn't work. I am skeptical that a software update is going to fix it. My 3gS worked FINE as a phone.

But, I'll say this. What apple does in the next 24 hours is going to impact them for the next six months. Apple, you can either fix this or it will haunt you.

If they lose 100K phone sales on this, that equals what it would cost to get a free bumper out to the MAYBE 1M users who have a problem with the current product. (while they come up with a permanent fix of course) At the 100001th phone lost, you're LOSING MONEY APPLE.

To those still waiting for confirmation emails: mine took 24 hours, but finally arrived. It's an email confirming that they are sending me a free bumper case; it looks like the ones above.

So I don't have an iPhone 4 yet, but I will Tuesday morning. Can I still call Apple and pretend I have one? Or do they ask a number that's on your phone? What should I even do or say on the phone to receive a free bumper?

As stated before, a million times, I have 6 phones.

5 on one plan and a 6th on it's own. I run a business and all the employees and I are constantly using our phones.

Holding a certain way is NOT an option.

cool. i know i spoke to an apple rep online chat before just to see what they would say and she said hold it in your right hand. haha.

So how many times is everyone trying this? I just got off the phone with someone who claimed that, since the case isn't a proven fix, they cannot provide one. I really don't want to come across as a mooch or anything, but I'm genuinely having this issue and would like Apple to rectify it. So should I call back and speak with someone else and keep doing this until I get a bumper? Or what?

You need to talk to the right supervisor to have them send you a free bumper.
