Why do people keep saying this? Your plan covers your usage, not the phone.

Actually, the US plan pricing is set to recover the phone subsidy; i.e. they reduce the price of the phone by X and amortize the loss over the life of the plan, or some portion thereof. In theory, the telco could charge less for a non-subsidized phone plan but most do not.

Apparently not. I get that they lower the price of the phone when you sign a two year agreement, but it has nothing to do with the phone. I have yet to see an extra charge on my bill to cover the cost of the phone.

I bought the phone myself.. That cost a lot...
But I now have the same plan, only its called a sim-only, as I would have when I would have gotten the phone, and it's just 50 euros a month cheaper. So over a 2 year period, I save a considerable amount of money...
I save 1200 euro's minus the cost of the phone.

So I think you pay the phone wether it is displayed on your bill or not.

Do you guys really need money that bad that you call to talk to three different supervisors to beg for a free piece of rubber? Do you realize it will be available for a buck or two from meritline in a week or two?

Nope, but if it's free why not? Get off ur high horse, princess.

I must admit, I'm saddened to hear all this trouble with the new iPhone... but also happy for the fact I didn't have any money to get one (hopefully, when I can get one, it'll be around September and this will be fixed).

More on topic, I do agree with the people who think it's a software issue. My 3GS had 3-5 bars around my apartment, no issue. Now, running iOS 4 (downloaded from iTunes, just doing an update, not a full restore), I have 1-3 bars in my apartment. Something has gone wonky with the bloody signal in iOS 4, and I must admit, it has been driving me nuts.

It doesn't work like that in the States. Unless you jailbreak your phone, you're stuck with AT&T and a contract. And even if you jailbreak it, you still need to have a service contract with another carrier in order to put their sim card in the phone. I could go buy a $30 dumb phone that has no web ability and the only change in my bill would be a $30 savings from not having a data plan (which is now required with all smart phones). Your rate plan is the same regardless of the device you use.

Yay! So I called apple and managed to get a free bumper. I just have a quick question for the other users that managed to get one for free: did you get an email confirming your order? How long (minutes, hours, etc) did it take for you to get the confirmation email?

I have noticed the same thing. But someone posted a video testing two 3GS's, one with iOS4 and one with 3.1.3, and both displayed the same number of bars when held and sitting on the table. I don't remember where I saw it or I'd provide the link.

Failed :(
Talked to supervisor said they are aware and are trying to work on a fix ASAP

UPDATE: I just got an email , but all it said was thank you for contacting apple and they gave me a case number...

Did everyone else get the DIY repair request email or some other explicit confirmation of a free bumper case order?

No email, but check your order status. Mine shows up there.

Could you please tell me the steps you took on getting a free one?

I also managed to get a free bumper too.

What you need to do:

1. Ask for a supervisor
2. Remind them of how much you have spent
3. With 2, remind them that you do not want to spend anymore money and that this reception issue is just unbearable.

I'm going to assume you don't know this since you're in America, but buying the phone outright in the uk, rather than subserdized, with the right sim only plan on the right network can work out quite a bit cheaper in the long run. Definitely worth doing if you have the funds available.

damn right. i am sick of uninformed people making comments like that when they ask me how much i paid for it.

I see you don't want to share case, email and contact info, thats your choice. Forgive me for continuing to feel skeptical about this. The company line is no cases. I honestly don't know what more I could have said to get a case (I told them about my numerous apple products, etc). If what you say is true, this really does piss me off.

well its clear that different reps, different departments have different views on the issue. why would we be lying?

I'm gana a call.

The trick is not to directly ask out right for the case, let them transfer you up a level and explain how u have hear that if you use a case it prevents the issue. then ask have they any cases that can be provided as good will to prevent the issue.

I ordered the bumper. It arrived today. Installed it. The top button is must be pressured by the extender because the phone keeps asking if I want to power down. I removed the "bumbler."

Called and spoke to a supervisor, he said he was gonna send one out to me.

I told him I had already ordered one, and he said the only thing we can do is send out a bumper since that's what fixes a problem.

I said my girlfriend is getting a new iPhone soon and to send it anyway just in case there are still issues.

I was hoping to get a dock or something else besides the bumper, but maybe with 2 bumpers I get twice the reception :D
