As @leman would ask: Why waste time with Metal 3 and showing off "high end" games during WWDC if they aren't into gaming?
I dunno. But Metal was introduced 8 years ago and seemingly it's gotten no traction (as far as making Macs or the Apple ecosystem the gaming platform of choice). Again, Apple's been promoting that their products/platform (iPoud Touch, Apple Arcade) is unbelievably breathtakingly awesome and would make other platforms obsolete (or at least a tiny minority)...yet here we are.

Some of that could be due to not great hardware for the price (historically). Now with AS it appears the hardware is good, for the price even with the base system (which they sell the most of).

I didn’t say they were, I read the article. I said they’d be better off in bed with them.

And users have a choice to spend, or not to spend money on micro transactions. Just because they’re addicted to a game to the point they’ll dump hundreds/thousands on a game just to progress further, shouldn’t be on Apple.

And your “LOL” made your reply REALLY funny. 👍
The problem with microtransactions is, that it's a small (single digit) percentage of gamers, who spend an extraordinary amount of money while most people spend nothing. From a business-perspective, it doesn't matter too much, where the money comes from, it's probably even easier to optimize a game towards a small number of addicts.

Err... EA isn't a "game studio". They're a publisher that also owns many game studios. Kind of an important distinction here, as we're talking about an entirely different scale than a mere "game studio".

Hi there. 51 year old gamer here, and long-time Apple user. Shall I judge Apple fans by the minority that are sycophant corporate worshipers, shedding a Magical And Amazing™ tear over every bit of maudlin marketing treacle the company sees fit to gift to the world? Or should I recognize there is nuance in every community, and not define the whole in broad strokes by its extremes?

Apple has famously and publicly looked down its nose at the gaming community for almost its entire existence. I enjoy my Macs and iOS devices immensely. But as a gamer, I'm just as relieved as you are that Apple won't get its mitts on a major game publisher. I'd rather EA go to someone who won't immediately attempt to remake it in its own gilded image.

The real problem with an acquisition like this would be that it would have been a huge amount of money and that money is justified by EA's nearly extortionary pricing formulas that prey on folks susceptible to the gambling mechanics and the microtransaction business model. So once you drop the huge cash to make the acquisition, you have to go along with the EA business model of trying to convince large numbers of young men to regularly spend large amounts of money on the games. I've no problem with a $70 game that is full and complete. And no problem with paying extra for further DLC that is really an add on for the folks that enjoyed the initial game. But EA doesn't make a lot of its money that way. They make it by convincing a few of the players to drop $100, $200 or even more to trick out their game characters with virtual skins and such. Or even to just have the players that one would expect to have in their sports simulations. That business model would have been a tough for one for Apple to swallow. And EA is so large, that the resulting culture of the merged companies would be different than Apple is today.

Wow. I love blanket statements that pin the perceived opinion of a small subset of a group on the entire group…

Like “men just think about sex all day” and “black mothers are usually single mothers”. These are falsehoods.

If we are going for toxic and self-entitled, let’s look at celebrities, influencers, and politicians first. Hey, we can even throw some apple fanboys in there too.
Exactly WTH is with that?! Got a swift ignore

This is one major factor that almost nobody seems to consider. Culture. EA's culture is massively different from Apple and there is a reason why EA is universally hated while Apple tops customer satisfaction polls.

Sorry to hear it. EA used to have some really good games. Much of the stuff on the App Store is pure trash.

Nobody is going to invest developing for a platform where gaming is damn near non-existent especially considering the economy right now. The only way Apple makes the platform take off is buying a developer like EA which will be forced to port and develop for the Apple platform.

Gamers spend billions, its almost a $200 billion industry, I think they have a right to complain about crap some of these studios put out...

Are the giant tech companies going to buy everything? Microsoft probably thinking of buying EA as well given their acquisitions. Maybe Sony. Not sure what Amazon needs it for? Is Walmart looking at EA?

Apple could make the platform viable just by getting with Sony and saying..."how can we help your game streaming service get to all our devices as quickly as possible?" And then doing the same for microsoft, steam, and any other service.

As Apple is to gaming what submarines are to aviation - it should not have bid in the first place.
Exactly, I have worked directly with them for many years, they don’t have a clue when it comes to gaming.

Now you wonder is Apple looking for another game studio to buy. One possibility, in my opinion: Riot Games, buying it from Tencent.
I wonder how much money they would have to offer for Tencent to sell a fairly known IP as League of Legends.

Are you stating that Apple couldn't change the culture of EA?

ehhhh, Sony may not be the right company for that, as they are focused on older titles for that kind of service. Sony for sure is not following in MS footsteps with day and date game access for newer titles.

EA at 34 Billion is a joke. Revenue might be there, but their games are mostly garbage.

Apple should just buy Neo-Geo catalog (or something similar such as Capcom) and put them on Apple Arcade or something.... that wouldn't cost anything close to 34B and people will enjoy much more.
