I wound up having to call Apple directly and waiting on hold for 20 minutes. However, in the end I managed to get a 64gb 3g ordered.

It seems as if there is (for me at least) an issue connecting to the store's cart. The cart will never load and will just sit there spinning forever. Tried on a Windows 7 system in Chrome, Firefox, & IE, and on an XP laptop in the same all to no avail. Amusingly enough, it would load fine on my iPhone (just very slowly.) The iPhone was connected to my wifi network so everything was going through the same setup it just refused to load on my windows machines. lol

After placing my order for two 64gigs delivered, ( I missed the pickup at store page ). I then placed two on hold for pick up, logged in as same user and was conformed a hold to pick up, I wonder if they will catch on and deny my in store pickup.

Ughhh... just ordered the 32GB 3G model. I'd love to just have purchased a WiFi version but in how I want to use this thing WiFi won't always be there. The wait until the end of April is going be excruciating.

Huy guys,

I never owned an iPhone or iPod touch, but I will buy the iPad. Now my question, I will not use the 3G for data, but I would love to use my iPad for GPS as i ma travelling a lot. Is the 3G will allow me to do this without a data plan?

Is the "assisted GPS" is as good as a "real GPS"?

Thanks.

The short answer is NO, not even with a data plan. Although you may be able to use a separate GPS chip like that included in the TomTom car kit to be able to use it for GPS.

Interesting that on the US iPad page the wording in the footnote has had the following phrase removed:

"This device has not yet been authorised as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorisation is obtained."

- which is as expected.

However, the UK iPad page still has the wording (and presumably other localised versions do too).

It's my understanding that the Federal Communications Commission is a US government body. Not sure why that wording should appear on international sites in the first place - but more curious that it remains there now. I can only imagine it's just an oversight/ timing issue.

3G supposed to ship sooner according to Apple rep.

Oh... when I spoke to the Apple rep she said the 3G units are actually going to be shipping earlier than expected. She said I should expect it by "Mid April." :apple:

I wouldn't count on info like that...Although it could be true, just don't get your hopes up.

Are you sure about that? Has that been definitely confirmed? I know it was discussed a lot in the past but I didn't know if anyone was certain especially since the Location features on the 3G iPad are identical to those on the iPhone 3GS.

iPhone 3GS:
  • Assisted GPS
  • Digital compass
  • Wi-Fi
  • Cellular
iPad
  • Wi-Fi
  • Digital compass
  • Assisted GPS (Wi-Fi + 3G model)
  • Cellular (Wi-Fi + 3G model)

Oh please, for the eleventy billionth time. Assisted GPS IS "real GPS". It just uses the cell towers, IF AVAILABLE, for a quicker/more accurate fix. It works perfectly fine without data or even a basic cell cell connection. That's why it's called "assisted" GPS. Obviously.

So short answer, YES. It is possible to use it as a GPS device with tomtom or navignon or whatever there is available.

The only time I hate the fact that I'm not a US citizen :(

Now hurry up with the international release apple :D

I think you are incorrect. Assisted GPS is the same description used in both the iPad 3G and in the iPhone 3GS. GPS certainly works in the iPhone without data on (assuming you have a GPS program, like Navigon or TomTom)... I think the problem is assuming Google Maps will work without 3G on... it won't since the maps aren't pre-loaded. I'm pretty sure there will be other navigation solutions available that will have pre-loaded maps. A Rand McNalley road Atlas would be sweet on an iPad. Gotta also figure all the travel books are going to want to integrate GPS into their maps.

no, you have to wait in line with the rest of the VIPs like you :p

lol not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but I just went ahead and RSVP'ed for store pickup instead.

I really would prefer to avoid the crowds (despite the fact that I believe them to be clean and relatively well-behaved), but I think my area is going to be a hotspot for iPad deliveries, and I just don't trust Fedex to deliver to my apartment.

My street is one-way, one-lane with no place to double-park, I'm in an interior courtyard, and there's just an empty foyer with lots of doorbells. I've ordered stuff before and I often wind up magically missing the delivery person (even if I'm home--many just give up before even ringing my door buzzer) and picking the package up at a fedex office. At least with in-store pickup, my success or failure is more in my hands.

The final straw is that the fedex saturday delivery didn't include the iPad case I wanted to order with it, meaning I'd have to go to the Apple store anyway :p

Oh well... chilling at home sounded nice.. I guess I can still change my mind later if I want.

the 3G device is just not needed for myself. I am damn sure not going to use something this big when I am driving. I will stick to my iPhone for that. Everywhere I am going to use my iPad will have Wi-Fi. Mainly work and home.

Reserved! Picking it up is like a religious experience...

They did not have overnight shipping so I reserved it for pickup at the Bethesda Row Apple Store in Maryland.

Plus picking it up is like a religious experience especially since you run into all of the other Apple fanatics eager to get one!

I think I am going to be getting another one when the 3G version comes out.

Assisted GPS IS real GPS. In fact it's better, because it also uses cell-sites to achieve an initial lock if available, making it faster (hence the "assisted").

And the answer to being able to use it as GPS without a data plan is actually 'yes', depending on what you mean about "using it as a gps".

If you mean using it with turn-by-turn instructions with voice, say, when driving, you will need to buy an app. If you just mean for looking up where you are and where to go, or what is around you, then you can use google maps to do that - but you need a data connection.
