The short answer is NO, not even with a data plan. Although you may be able to use a separate GPS chip like that included in the TomTom car kit to be able to use it for GPS.

This isn't really the place to argue about this, but your answer is incorrect. Assisted GPS is just as good if not better than plain old GPS. What the "assisted" part means is that it uses cellular triangulation to get a general idea of your location and to "assist" in getting a lock on satellites.

How do I know if it will be delivered on Saturday? Can I check ups/fedex?

Reserved a 16gig Wifi-only model for pickup in store :)

I'm requesting the day off in advance, just to be sure I can be out there ;)

A-GPS is technically better than a standalone GPS radio of equal caliber, so that's an incorrect statement. Assisted GPS will get a signal lock in a fraction of the time of a regular unit.

The difference is that dedicated receivers tend to have better GPS chips in them to begin with, so cellular devices aren't of the same quality, with or without the assisted GPS.
So what is the "Assisted GPS" do then?

Assisted GPS is "real" GPS. It's assisted by a cellular radio to speed up signal lock. Having a data plan or not is irrelevant to the GPS hardware--all it needs is the ability to see cellular towers.

That said, whether individual iPad applications making use of the GPS will work without a data plan is obviously unknown (it varies on the iPhone).

They did not have overnight shipping so I reserved it for pickup at the Bethesda Row Apple Store in Maryland.

Plus picking it up is like a religious experience especially since you run into all of the other Apple fanatics eager to get one!

I think I am going to be getting another one when the 3G version comes out.

Marcus

The Free Shipping is a street date delivery unless Saturday delivery is not available in your area. Luckily in my area it is.

32GB Wi-Fi here reserved to be picked up at my Apple store. Wish you had the option to pre-order accessories but hopefully the store will have them. Now the wait!

Did the same. April 2nd is actually a paid holiday at my work so I already have the Friday off by default, that was pretty damn lucky!

Yeah I noticed the ship date on the dock.. I am sad if I don't get the dock the same day. Seems kinda lame if they did that... especially if someone wants a case on it. Although I am waiting for different cases to appear.

I ordered two this morning. One for Pickup, and one for delivery for a family member. Both 16GB Wifi. I wanted the Camera, but I figure I will start with these, and then if the camera comes out, I can always upgrade and give this one to my daughter...

I am confused what Friday the 2nd has to do with the iPad and being damn lucky...

just ordered my wifi only version (will wifi tether my 3g connection).. now i just have to sell my kindle 2.. :)

i'm torn. should i buy the 64GB 3G for $829, or splurge a bit and get a 250GB model with built-in camera, mac os x, flash support and a larger screen for $999?

Right now there is a small wait for the $999 iPad you described above. It should ship in 2012 right after the Mayan calendar expires.

Ordered up my cheapo 16 GB WiFi model (will hold me over until version 2 arrives and AT&T's 3G coverage is so spotty I question how much I could use it anyway).

One note, the iPad itself says "Delivers on April 3". I initially had an accessory (case) added and that item said "Ships by April 3rd". So it looks like the iPad will indeed show up on that day, but accessories probably won't. I dropped the case from the order and will just go pick it up at an Apple store later.

A VGA Adapter??? Are you kidding me? I was expecting an HDMI. Hopefully this will come out. If not by Apple then by a 3rd party.

Thank you

Thank for your answers on the GPS. I will buy the 3G model and then If i see my usage require data, Ill be all set!

I will use it mainly when i do sightseeing in a city I am visiting (on feet)... Im tired of spending time triyng to fin where I am on a map...

Decided to reserve in-store (I'm a sucker for a free gift, so hope it's a T-shirt or something worthwhile) but I'm getting the feeling that reservation line might be longer than the non-reservation line... or maybe the reservation line will be the only line until 3pm. I suppose Apple will have an army of employees out with their credit card enabled Touches so should go fast.

Yeah, I found that bizarre, to say the least. Apple really seems to have a hatred of HDMI as they refuse to put it on any of their devices yet it is now the standard connector for home A/V on all newer products (TVs, DVRs, and most PCs). I hope they're not trying to push Mini Display Port as a replacement, it's way too late for that. I can't even remember when the last device I bought with a VGA port was. More than 3 years ago I think. How can a company who pushes cutting edge technology be so blind about this stuff sometimes?

The last few times I was in the Tampa Apple store that is how I checked out every time. They entered my card info in and the receipt printed out from under one of the tables.
