So you think that Apple should somehow ensure that the battery lasts longer than possible? Or would you rather the phone just be dead once the phone reaches a point where the battery can no longer supply the proper power? I guess I am just trying to think of what options they honestly had. The only one I can think of is letting people know of the issue and offering to replace the battery for a fee. I don't think they should just be replacing batteries for free.

Battery fall off is predictable. Apple knows pretty much exactly how much battery will be left after 12, 24, etc... months of use. There's no reason Apple couldn't have known that the iPhone 6 would not function properly after 2 years. That the genius at the Apple store will tell you the battery is fine and refuse to even sell an upgrade to users whose phones are getting throttled is just icing.

Lastly, if what Apple is doing now is just common sense because batteries degrade, then why wasn't it needed for the first 8 years after the iPhone was released, and why doesn't every other phone manufacturer need to do it?

It's not a matter of lasting longer. It's a matter of ohmic drop caused by the impedance growth of an aged cell that Apple clearly didn't account for.

... and if your phone shut down periodically you would be complaning about that. What Apple is doing is smart. Where they failed is being transparaent.

Well before Apple, all phones had easily replaceable batteries. It was great, you could even have one battery charging while using your phone with another. But Apple's form over function and drive for early obsolescence ruined it for everyone. So either way, this is a problem of Apple's making.

And the proper thing for Apple to have done here is include a switch in settings to enable this feature, so that if your phone shuts down periodically, you can enable it, or not, your choice. They could even legitimately enable the feature by default as long as they're disclosing that they're throttling your phone and you can easily turn it off right here.

It always amazes me at how people are so willing to take the side of massive corporations over individual consumers.

Anyway, my own experience with iOS 11 is that it has absolutely destroyed the performance of my iPhone 5s, which was humming right along before the update.
I have two 5s on ios 11.2.5 and this is a very good release. Battery life is good(well good for two phones with 4 year old batteries). Performance is good.

Apple has 90 million customers according to the internet. Do you think all 90 million can be happy at once?

lmao this generation is a bunch of babies. Suing for what. I have a iphone 6s and i dont really care if they lower the clock speed for phone for better battery life. It doesn't affect my daily use at all, neither do it see a performance difference. I mainly browse the web, text, listen to music and play games with no performance changes at all

Every page in this thread is comical. Why do people defend Apple still?!? Yes it's a corporation set out to make money and when they do a move like this, they should pay up. Plain and simple. There's a reason they sit on billions in cash, this is one of those reasons.

Why do you even have a 5S still? Welcome to 2017.

Do you think each generation all the old phones instantly disappear? When you trade in your old 1 year phone, do you think it goes to a recycler right away? Any company taking trade-ins is reselling those phones. Not everyone cares to always have the latest and paying under $100 for a used 5S doesn't look so bad next to $1000 for a new X.

Plus people lose their phones and don't want to or can't afford a new one right away so they'll buy an older used one to tide them over.

Then there's hand-me-downs. My mother-in-law still uses an iPhone 4s that my wife cast off years ago, and she's on a voice-only pre-paid plan. But she still loves using the phone as a camera and to read email where she has wi-fi. She also doesn't even want a hand-me-down newer phone because she loves the size of the 4s and doesn't care about any newer features.

Thank you for the welcome to 2017. Now I welcome you to the real planet Earth.

About time. What they are doing is highly unethical. Their involvement with my property stops after payment.

Not sure I would go with unethical, but they should give the user the choice to trade off performance for battery. This is simply not Apple's choice to make. What it tells you is that Apple does not care about how you use the device, they just care about what you say about the device. So everyone should get behind this and let Apple know we don't need a nanny telling us how to best use our devices.

iOS 11.2.5 is great on my X, but it's public beta.

Apple's explanation for what they're doing is logical. However, as far as I know, its the first time they've explained it - years after these phones were sold. I do think there's an issue there - they advertised these phones as having certain performance characteristics and never (again to my knowledge) suggested that those characteristics would degrade with the battery.

No, you want it to be No 1 because you like complaining about things. If you can make somebody else bad, you're subconsciously telling your ego that you are better than them.

Again, my phone (iP6) is more than 3 years old and scores higher than it should on GB4. It runs iOS11.2 without any problems. None of this fits your conspiracy.
I "want it to be No 1 because you like complaining about things" then bullcr&p about my ego. OK. no it's No1 because that's what Apple have admitted to regardless of your use case.

For those that state Apple has nothing to do with your phone after payment - they still actually own the software on it and you are only allowed to use it.
I think I'd rather slow down than allow battery to kill phone or data. They weren't very clear about this.
Lawyers need to make money and if this goes anywhere they'll make a lot more than customers will. I support Apple

I support the consumer because ultimately we’re the ones that get screwed on this. If nothing comes of this lawsuit, things will truly become Caveat Emptor. Apple will have no reason to improve the battery tech on their iPhone, because it’s in the interest of their business to keep customers coming back annually to either get a battery replacement or a new phone. No one cares whether or not they own the software, so long as it doesn’t ruin your experience of using the phones (and that’s what’s at play here).

What do you mean by "a move like this"? There is a problem that when batteries go old, and the manufacturer does nothing about it, then the phone can shut down at random times. Look through this thread, it happens with all kinds of phones that are getting a bit older. You can prevent this from happening by making the phone run slower. I think it's a good move to make my phone work reliably. "Works" comes first for me, ahead of "works fast". Everyone else implements "fast until it crashes".

That’s awesome. We’re all so happy for you (so you can go about your business, not take part in any suits, and continue along buying iPhone devices as you wish) but for the rest of us, we are all pissed because we have experiences these issues and we’ll see what the courts have to say about all this.

Have they slowed the 7 Plus yet?
If you have one with really old batteries, then it will either shut down randomly, or it will run slower. Same with iPhone 8 and iPhone X. There is just no iPhone 8 or iPhone X with old batteries around yet.

I'll incur the wrath of the Apple faithful for saying this, but I applaud the lawsuit, and I hope it does get granted class-action status. Apple operates with impunity. Ever since Steve Jobs passed, Apple has become more and more anti-consumer. My iPad3, running iOS10 overnight became slow. Even simple apps like the kindle reader (which is what I did on my iPad 75% of the time), became laborious to use. I rarely experienced "sudden shutdowns," because my usage doesn't spike the CPU. The iPad became so slow, I was forced to purchase a Kindle Fire 7. I absolutely hate the kindle fire 7, but $29 for a kindle fire is easier to do than $329 for an iPad4. If "smoothing CPU demands" were really apple's goal, then they would've been up front about it, and allowed me and thousands of users to opt out of the throttling. I'd rather my iPad "suddenly shut down" or whatever. My usage is not high-CPU, and I'm being penalized for not upgrading.

Jesus, read my threads I'm on your side; man...

Simply amazing. All the complaining in this thread. LOL

I can say my iPhone 6 was suffering from performance issues a few months ago... then the battery would randomly discharge from 60% to 30% then the phone would die all within a few seconds. It doesnt take a genius to realize there is something wrong with the battery. My phone is over 3 years old and considering the battery is charged and discharged every day, I would say thats acceptable. I spent $79 to replace the battery at Apple. Phone is perfect. No more slowness no more random shutdowns. My other option was to buy a $1000 iPhone X or a $1000 Android phone. Ill keep my 6 for now and I will be buying another iPhone.
