It's not "virtue signaling" to approve of a $100M commitment. On the other hand, people who say "virtue signaling" are signaling something else entirely.

So you missed the story posted here within the last week explaining that Apple has been trying to figure out how to automate tasks in the assembly process (let's not call it "manufacturing" - it's assembly, which is quite different), and has been unable to get it to work?

So in your mind, throwing money at a problem makes it go away? Cook grandstands and throws money at this given problem all while his own executive team has not one single black American on it. If you don't see the hypocricy here then I don't know what to tell you.

Gross. Apple has gone full SJW. If Tim wants to engage in political activism, he should do it on his own time and donate his own money. I'm sure there are plenty of Apple employees who just want to do their best engineering work and build great products... rather than supporting Tim's personal political pet projects.
I know it’s fun to blame Tim for all the world’s problems, but the truth is, the more social activism Apple does, the better and better they look, and the happier and happier their shareholders are. And The more happy their shareholders are, the higher the stock price goes, and as a stock price goes up, so does the amount of money they make, thus the more money they can put in their employees hands, and in their future projects.
Sorry if you don’t like it, but that’s politics baby.
And business is politics.
Also, Tim probably had very little to do with this initiative, all he probably did was sign the paper.

Keep in mind, folks, Tim isn't Apple's dictator. He's still accountable to the shareholders. That $100 million is ultimately their money, as is their profit from off-shore manufacturing.
This!

There are 16 top leadership positions at Apple. Not one is filled by a black American.
There are a further 7 Board of Director positions at Apple. Not one is filled by a black American.

So to those who are virtue signaling by siding with Tim Cook's pathetic attempt at "diversity" and "inclusion" perhaps you can tell me why 23 positions at the top of Apple do not include one single black American.

And then we have Tim Apple's virtue-signaling compatriot at Amazon, one Jeff Bezos.
At Bezos' Amazon out of 48 executive positions there is not one single black American. (And only 2 women.)
But Bezos doesn't care if "we lose customers" because they want "diversity" and "inclusion" at Amazon.

Exactly. All posturing, marketing, and talk. But it tickles the ear of uninformed U.S. Americans, so it's enough. Tim can now go back to his luxurious lifestyle and plush office. He has done his job here.

If he sows divide, yes, he is the enemy. Just as a liar is the enemy of truth.
Look, what I see in this thread isn't a complete denial of any issues regarding unequal opportunities or racism. I just see a disagreement over what constitute good, effective and reasonable solutions. You people pretend like it's so very obvious what we need to do right now, but what I see is an extremely complex cluster of problems that are all interlinked. I see a severe lack of actual, substantial discussions of the issues, what I see instead is sheer panic, virtue signaling and blindly throwing money at things. My disagreement isn't that you shouldn't solve these problems. My disagreement is that what is being done feels like big companies buying letters of indulgence. They know there is a heck of a lot more to do in their positions as they sit at the actual roots of this cascade of grievances.

If you want to paint me as the enemy of your cause, go ahead, but don't pretend like you are all that different from the mindless unconditional Trump supporter drones that you criticize.

Exactly, put a couple of plants in the areas of the country that need jobs...perhaps that would ease some of the strain caused by "Systemic Racism"...or keep it all in China...

One of the factors companies look at before siting a plant is the available employment base. Racism is built into the process. Companies and localities MUST invest in the basics to educate and elevate that base. This will take a long time. Who is going to pay for it?

You think spending $100 million is less effective than giving ~3 people promotions?

Apple is not perfect and there are plenty of things to criticize Apple for.

Nonetheless, $100M is a lot of money. Apple is a hugely wealthy company right now, and I for one am happy to see them putting some of their cash into an initiative that will hopefully accomplish some worthwhile things.

I'm anxious to see what is done with this money.

Those who have a problem with these initiatives, remember, you are the minority right now. If you decide to take a stance and leave the platform because you disagree with Apple and Tim’s social policies, the company wouldn’t miss you one bit. Oh by the way, other tech companies share the same values, too, so, again, you are a minority. A lot of you became overnight Apple users because its a status symbol. When you look at who Steve Jobs used in the Think Different campaigns, you could seriously tell a lot of the negativity in here are coming from users who don’t have any belief in human rights, equality, justice and dignity for others. Is Apple ignoring human rights violations in countries where it does business such as China? Likely yes, but its not Apples responsibility to be the worlds sole human rights advocate. That’s why we have governments, politicians, diplomats, United Nations. The United States, Canada, other Asian countries, Caribbean, Europe, South America all do trade with China too. At the same time, companies and individuals can play their role in their own jurisdictions where they do have some power.

I doin't think most folks here have a problem with the idea of the initiatives. I just wonder about the sincerity and longevity of the initiatives. Talk is easy, true change is much harder. Is Apple in it for the long haul? Once the current action is gone, my guess is that Apple and other companies will backslide to complacency and maximizing profit.

Let’s at lease give them the benefit of the doubt.

Talk is cheap.
Their products are not even inclusive for those of us who have smaller hands.
This is just like saying they will make it fair for everyone, but continues to make a glass ceiling.

Apple needs to invest money AND time to help under-reached communities. The pool of qualified hires needs to be improved before you can make progress in this area.

Still waiting for that Apple store in Mondawmin Mall, Baltimore.

If he did nothing, there would be outrage...

There is outrage because he is doing nothing while trying to appear like he is doing something. Which, coincidentally, is the same thing so many politicians claim to care that "black lives matter" are doing.

Apple says the effort will build on its work with historically black colleges, community colleges, STEM education,

If you've already made it to one of those programs above, chances are you are doing OK already. If you really are serious about doing something, focus on the abject poverty and hopelessness that 400 years of institutionalized racism has brought about.

Meanwhile, Apple’s management team and board of directors is overwhelmingly white males. You have to laugh at baby boomers like Tim Cook. They virtue signal like crazy, but they never give up the real power of control. But stupid people do fall for their virtue signaling, they actually believe these guys. 🙄

And what the hell is $100 million to Tim Cook or to Apple itself? It’s like a regular person offering five cents “for the cause.” What a riot. 😂

EXACTLY!!!!! THANK YOU!!!! None of this is what MLK stood for. BLM movement is not....nevermind I can't say. MR will remove it.... carry on!

I really wish some of you would stop throwing out Dr King, when all you know is an excerpt from one speech used out of context. It's transparent. You have absolutely no clue what he stood for and was about. How many of his books have you read? Stop trying to hijack a great man in order to try support your frivolous beliefs. Actually read his work and you'll see how wrong you are to use that as your go to.

Product RED is virtue signaling. If Apple really cared about HIV/AIDS, they would quit making phones and become medical researchers. /s

100 million is nothing to sneeze at...higher education is being pummeled by COVID and the investments in it via this program will be especially beneficial for those institutions at this time. I'm glad we're arguing about the merits of Apple investing money here that could have easily been donated elsewhere.

Was popping in say that this thread would be absolute trash. Didn't expect it to happen so immediately. Impressive.

If he did nothing, there would be outrage. If he gets involved, there is outrage. In a no-win environment, I prefer the side of action, effort. The 'do nothing,' 'me first and me only' approaches are proving pretty catastrophic in the US.

Interested to learn more about what the critics here are doing to support Black Lives Matter? Bitching about CEO participation in a tech thread? Neat.
Thank you.
