According to you, Jobs would have never been born…

Money does not make better person, as a matter of fact, most important people were born in poor families.
Are you aware of the stats on very poor households or are you white knighting?

If you grew up in a household of 4-6 or more children whose parents made $4.4k or less annually you wouldn't romanticize it. You'd be very angry at your parents for being so bad with money that they had that many kids. These parents would impose on their eldest to pay for their younger sibs until they graduate.

Kids from those families tend to suffer from childhood malnutrition that causes physical and mental stunting.

Steve Jobs' adopted parents could afford to send him to a private college out of pocket. They did not starve. He only had 1 sibling with his adopted parents.

If a person is a CEO of a megacorp like  and really, personally cares about the environment, it must be hard to reconcile the fact that every device they make eventually ends up in a landfill- Billions of them.
Ultimately — they’re producing untold tons of toxic e-waste.

And I wonder how many people here are true environmentalists, making that their life's mission, and living a lifestyle in support of those goals.

More likely, hypocrites that don't walk their talk day in and day out.

In other words, when it comes to buying an iPhone or other fancy piece of tech with a short lifetime before it's landfilled, well, those consequences are for other people to be concerned about.

how many people here are true environmentalists?

depends what an environmentalist is nowadays
personally not using gasoline is important and wasting energy as far as "AC on window closed" helps.

last October7th 2022 I made a goal on not being in a car or gas vehicle for as long as possible, which was achieved last week and cant see myself on a road in traffic for the future.
lucky I work at home, can cycle anywhere and do not run a major computer and tech company.

Leonardo DeCaprio seems legit since he preaches awareness which is good
though he wont be as carbon neutral as me, but his voice over the environment is more important
and effective as I can or will ever be.
that matters the future knowing we should care about our environment respectfully
not how politicians try to do abusing this movement as a platform for votes
when they get caught having a brown footprint in their homes.

It's not hypocritical when one is not constantly trying to talk up how green/environmentally friendly they are like how Tim Cook and Apple does.
Being green and environmentally friendly is a journey. It is not hypocritical to discuss the initiatives and the future plans for getting there.
Plus, when one has the financial means as Cook does, it's much easier to be environmentally friendly than the average working class person.
If you’re discussing sophisticated engineering that only the 1% of the 1% can afford yes. But if you are discussing the myriad of things the consumer can do to either emit less greenhouse gases, recycle and reuse or be more environmentally friendly it’s about attitude and not budget.

amen!
I cancelled my HBOMAX today and purchased a paperback novel book instead
due to too much bad tech.
Don't get me wrong, there are good things about tech, but I feel like we are amped up every year for products that could just be a press release and encouragement to upgrade only if your existing device is limping.

I drive an EV too. But I don't do so because of the environment. I drive one because I can change at home, and thus, spend only about twenty-five dollars on fuel a month. I also like it because it goes 0-60 faster than most super cars, requires hardly any maintenance and is technologically advanced.
Yep federal credits, state credits, no sales tax on EVs and price reduction made the decision a no brainer.
But the environment? No. The toll mother earth takes to make those batteries is steep.
Fracking, mining for coal, getting crude out the ground and burning diesel, petrol and jet fuel are harmless? At least with electric after the raw materials mined there is a chance to charge your vehicle through electric generated by wind turbines or nuclear fuel.
Yeah it's a lot easier to compost and recycle and drive electric when you have servants to clean your house and drive you around and you live in a very nice area of California that provides these services.
Absolute BS.
And none of these executives like to talk about their private jets, this has been a thing since at least the 90s with Al Gore. Ironically it's a very "Inconvenient Truth."
One picks and chooses their battles. Tim is not a do as I say not as I do person.

The question shouldn’t be should Apple make a new iPhone every year.
It should be
Should people feel compelled to buy a new iPhone every year.
If there is a problem it’s with the people that feel they need a new iPhone every model year.
If you are a professional that uses the phone, then you are compelled to purchase a yearly upgrade because of the fast changing improvements in 5G modem technology (now the Qualcomm X70, was the X65) and accompanying RF electronics (which were updated in the iPhone 14 models). This improves signal quality in weak regions, such as within skyscrapers, subways, underground parking garages, attended conferences, congested cell towers, driving on non-interstate highways, using trains.
The newer phones from the 14 on also have 2 GPS radios which helps in cities with skyscrapers, subways, and other interference.
The newer phones also have better background noise cancellation and transcription from the upgraded electronics.

For my work, and that of many professionals, voice quality and being able to be reached is important. Do you really want a doctor, a lawyer, etc. that can't be reached or has a signal breaking up because they didn't spend the $2 per day for an iPhone upgrade, or didn't use the Verizon network?

The board of Apple insists Tim travel by private jet for corporate AND personal travel.

"Carbon neutral" doesn't mean all that much when you're on a Gulfstream V every other day... I too recycle my cans and plastic where applicable.
Nah, it’s not his choice. And it’s done for safety reasons.

I think its pretty obvious we don't need a new phone every year. The schedule is derived from profit maximalism and Apple trying to look good for shareholders, sales at various shopping seasons, etc. If it was slowed to 2 year cycle or even just "whenever it is ready" then sales would be less, but you could still buy "the latest iphone" whenever you want to. In fact you'd have "the latest iphone" even longer bc September would not be the line in the sand it is today.
This message board would be lit with people demanding a new phone when every other manufacture is making one.
THEN.
After every other manufacture moves to a 2 or 3 year (whenever it's ready) cycle. We would demand it go back to every year, and these phones suck 5 minutes after getting it in our hands, and demanding it fold or be holographic.
We are a terrible species.

If you want a new phone at all. This is the way it will be.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has explained why the company releases a new iPhone every year, what the device will be like in the future, what he is personally doing to reduce his carbon footprint, and more in a new interview with Brut.

tim-cook-2022-iphone-14.jpg

The brief interview, shot at an Apple data center and solar power facility in Denmark, delves mainly into Cook's opinion on various environmental issues such as "greenwashing." Cook explained that Apple wants to contrast its secrecy about its products with openness about its environmental efforts because it wants to be copied by others. Cook added that Apple still has more work to do in terms of renewable power and use of recycled materials to reach its environmental goals.

When asked if "we really need a new iPhone every year," Cook answered:

The interviewer then asked what the iPhone will be like 20 or 30 years into the future:

When asked what Cook does personally to help the environment, he responded:

Ah but does he keep his EV for more than 7 years, that's the big question?

I find it funny that people really think driving an EV is good for the enviroment…
It is better than driving an ICE car. Incremental improvements multiplied by millions of cars and households can make a big impact.

A GV? Pffft. He's on a 650ER and there'll be 800s on order.

Tim Apple is Steve Jobs minus the passion for aesthetics and innovation, with a generous Gordon Ramsey dash of bean counting.

Sorry Cook, in my opinion, he just wants a redemption of his guilty feel in being rich. Lower carbon footprint is not you being an Apple CEO, because many workers in the factories even could not have a chance to say "I try my best to do something that has a lower carbon footprint." They are in a poor lower carbon life.

I understand the criticism of Apple and Timmy, but idk… I still respect their efforts. they’re a publicly traded mega corporation. they’re not perfect and they want profit.

I like the way they do business even if I don’t agree with everything— more than certain other tech companies.

also can’t say I have EVER been excited about a Cook interview lol or any Apple exec interview for that matter.

To be fair, Apple makes an iPhone every year because there are still a lot of people who will upgrade every year regardless of how little changed. If we as consumers are overwhelmingly inclined to keep our phone for at least two years, Apple would be much more incentivized to slow down the pace. But I don't see that happening, even if I agree this yearly upgrade is a bit meaningless for mature products such as the iPhone or the Apple Watch.
Well most people are not upgrading every year. I upgrade maybe every 5 years. But of course I want the latest possible tech, especially when I do not upgrade that frequently. Someone who upgraded from the iPhone 14 to 15 may have not been blown away. But someone upgrading from an iPhone 8 would have been.

I bet just 1 trip on his private jet has a higher carbon footprint then every member on here combined.
Exactly. These rich who claim to be environmentally friendly are hypocrites. Even Apple’s claims to be environmentally friendly are a smokescreen. Their entire business model is based on you throwing out the old tech and buying something new. Apple may be marginally more environmentally friendly, but that’s about it. If we actually care about the environment as a society, we need to address it at the societal level. Expecting profit-driven companies to be environmental is silly by definition. Buy less stuff. Have fewer children. Travel less. Buy small apartments, not big houses. Use public transit rather than any type of car. Those are the real solutions. But people would much rather pay lip service and pretend that using paper straws and buying an Apple phone is accomplishing the same thing. It’s not.

Sorry, but IMOP, to be environmentally friendly, it should be about the whole society, not just individuals. Tech pieces with a short lifetime like the iPhone should have some ways or organizations to recycle them or do something.

Because his focal areas are not what made apple great and why many of us love the brand. The software has become less polished under him, the designs recycled to older devices, and he isn’t a products guy.
I get making your shareholders, happy, but Steve Jobs was able to do that very easily simply based off of his ability to create desirable products. Tim Cook seems to be able to just try and talk about environmental or LGBTQ related causes. None of these are reasons why I buy into Apple.
Ok it’s not 2011 so assuming that Jobs wouldn’t have similarly been asked about these issues had he lived is anyone’s guess. My guess is that he would have been. Product Red was very much something Jobs went all-in on and that was one of the early corporate social causes. He also spoke about environmental issues at most of the keynotes in the last few years of his life. If anything, Tim is following the trajectory that Steve Jobs set in these areas. But I also would say that these are topics most high-profile individuals are asked about, not just Tim. I disagree that the software is less polished and the hardware recycled. There are only so many ways to build an all-screen phone. Pull out your iPhone 5 and compare it to the iPhone 15 and tell me they are even remotely similar.
