Umm, right. Or they could have done that even more effectively by not even releasing an iPhone 8. And watch this space for the iPhone 9 (8S) to slot in neatly behind the X before they get rid of the old line.
I don't know man, they wouldn't want to risk alienating any potential sales by out-pricing the average consumer. It's cheaper for them to make two options this year, as the market will adjust to the new pricing of the iPhone X, which is already underway. The new price for an iPhone will be $999.99 USD +moving forward since that is the price the market is willing to pay.

You also have to remember that in the US at least, most people pay for their phones through monthly installments. For this reason, people are willing to pay for the more expensive phone since there isn't as much of an upfront cost.

Sorry. Is true though.

It’s as if the people who mock have never queued up for an exciting event themselves, which of course they have. I just think it’s kinda hypocritical.
Not necessarily everyone who mocks those queuing up for a store has bad taste. Taste is very subjective. I'm not so sure they are all sad and lonely either.

I wonder how many people will stomach buying a £1000+ phone:

a) Each year
b) Once they have dropped it

At least if I drop my phone, it's "only" £600. A 1k phone tips an important scale. I have a case on but it'll only save it so much. Of course there is gadget insurance, but then that makes the ownership cost even more expensive.

a) it’s not each year. Get real.

b) People drop their £400-£700 phones all the time. Sliding that scale up a few percent changes nothing. It’s an expensive fix regardless.

I'll wait for the X to be published and a month or two of actual use to see how that miniature battery holds out in real life use. Then I'll decide if any of them are worth purchasing. I doubt they are. Too bad I hate androids.. still, my current 6+ is so tired I need to switch to something. Maybe Mi Mix 2. :p

Fair point, could be. But I am very suspicious about the "hole" between 8 and X.

a) the fanboys who have already ordered one of those without even knowing what they're actually buying ARE buying one every year. Probably top-of-the-line model so they have more to brag about while they use it as table decoration because it's out of battery.

b) 400-700 -> 1000 == a few percent? Sure.

When people flock like that it usually means there’s a decent reason for it.

People who mock this behaviour obviously have no taste because they are sad and lonely creatures who criticise people who enjoy life and its perks.
...and here I thought they were just fanboys.

My point was if you queue up for anything then you can’t mock others for queueing up for something else.

You said it yourself, taste is subjective. Don’t mock people who have a different taste to yours, it’s disrespectful.

That point is understandable but is completely different than your original statement, which seems to be fueled by emotion more than fact. :)

I just picked up my iPhone 8 from AT&T after initially ordering an 8 Plus from the Apple Store and I have to say it’s definitely a nicer looking phone than what came before it. I traded in a Matte Black 7 for a Silver 8 and the glass back is beautiful. The texture is much nicer to hold than the aluminum and while the phone is slighter heavier than my 7 I think it makes the phone easier to hold and type on. The display isn’t a huge upgrade but the true tone is nice. The camera seems to have better light filtration but I can’t tell if that’s related to the display or the updated camera.

Biggest reasons to upgrade include the wireless charging, faster processor and better camera. Not a necessary upgrade but it only costs me $15 more a month than my 7 so why not?

My issue is I don't want a phone the size of the plus but I'd at least like the camera and features of the plus. I'd actually consider the 8 over the X if it at least had the same camera setup as the 8 plus. I've tried my hand at a phablet sized phone with the 6p and did not enjoy carrying it around in my pocket.

The X makes more sense for me from a size and camera perspective that and well I'd like an OLED display. Apple dropped the ball on that one in with the 8 as well.

I know what you mean. For the first few years I would only read and never comment on articles or posts. The articles were more about engineering, less provocative and the posts were discussions rather than insults. With the new Twitter generation it's a mob mentality. This mob behavior has led journalists to also write provocative articles to get more hits. It's a vicious circle but the art is in letting it go. Some statements will get to you eventually though :)

I quit Facebook for the same reason. People would repost fake news and argue about its authenticity without any knowledge on the subject. I lost my cool a couple of times and decided to leave. This same thing might happen on macrumors.

A few percent?

Wee bit of an understatement there, going from 700 to 1000 is 42%

It is a big jump bit if you don’t like it don’t buy it. Also it doesn’t cost the price of the phone to repair it..

I remember when the £1000 Nokia 9000 Communicator came out. If you dropped and broke that it really did cost you £1000 to replace it!

Already? This used to happen way quicker. When I ordered my 6 two weeks before the launch, I received it like 2-3 weeks after launch because of supply constraints. My mom ordered an iPhone 8 two days ago and received it today.

One more time. Everyone agrees, there will be less demand for the iPhone 8 because of the millions who will be ordering the iPhone X. That said, just like you experienced with the iPhone 6, some phones are already two to three weeks delayed.

It’s bizarre.

You would have thought the internet would have eradicated nonsense becuse if it’s open nature but in fact it did the opposite.

Always call out BS though, it’s our duty as rational people.

You're listing economy/utility models when we're talking about high end. Name one high end car from BMW, Mercedes, Lexus or even Honda, Toyota, etc. that doesn't get updated every year or two years?

Take a look at the Porsche 911. It's not that dramatically different. First Gen Volvo XC 60 (2010-2017), Second Gen BMW X3 (2010-2017), 4th Gen Lexus LS 460 (2006-2017). Cars generally get a refresh at about 3 years into the cycle and many don't get a total redesign for at least 6 to 7 years.

Who would buy an 8 right now? I imagine with the X around the bend, and the Pixel 2's launching in a couple weeks, anyone who follows tech is holding out.

Aunt Gertrude might buy an 8 if she had an upgrade sitting around.

I'm not convinced yet that millions will part with over $1k after taxes for doing the same thing they can do on their existing phone. Then again, it's just a fe dollars more per month and people seem to live in a land of payments, so maybe you're right.

Businesses for starters, even if the employees are tech savvy, as they don't see the value. Additionally, some people just don't see $1,000 of value in a phone.

The Apple Store at Green Hills Nashville had maybe 20/30 people when they opened at 8am. I was the first one in the store and that has never happened to me before. I would say half were purchasing phones and half watches.
