Don't let PayPal in your bank account. Never let anyone or company that you don't completely trust into your bank account. Anyone here completely trust PayPal. Not me.

These type of crazy PayPal stories pop up all the time. There is one fix for most of them. Don't attach your bank account to your PayPal account. It's tempting, but so is stopping for that flashy looking on on crack alley. Don't do it.

oops!

I was actually saved by my external sound card. Got an email just before Lion came out that my sound card's drivers for Lion are not ready yet.

This is why I only use iTunes gift cards for purchases. I also use one time credit card numbers with a limit that is linked to my card for online buying

If losing $3658.78 is keeping you from paying your mortgage rate, then you've got more serious problems. If you can't survive without income for 6 months, you're probably living above your means. I mean, you could get sick, crash your car, need to pay for a relative's funeral...

I recommend having 2 bank accounts, one for paying bills that you fill up regularly and another one for safekeeping, stock trading, etc. I personally wouldn't recommend a savings account though in this current economic situation. If you're in the Euro-Zone or North America, get yourself some gold and silver to maintain your wealth during the following years.

Still, this kind of error shouldn't happen. Why would you buy ANYTHING on the app store twice? I assume Apple has some safeties in place that prevent you from buying the same virtual thing more than once. Multiple licenses (if you have to buy for a company for instance) should not be handled via one-click.

It might be paypal in which case you can contact your bank and get that money back. If your bank doesn't allow that, you need a different bank.

you can't eat gold. So I don't really see the point. Why do people think you should hoard things that can't be consumed if the world economy is crashing? Oil, food, bullets I get...gold not so much. You will be taking your trunk load of gold to buy a loaf of bread if things get as bad as you think they will.

you know, i bet apple accumulates a decent amt of interest on these "false transactions" that they don't refund to the buyer

nice gig

mmmmm, i think Apple need not rely on any such "interest gig" to make money. Have you heard of the iPhone?, iPad?, iPod?, and MacBook Pro?, and MacBook Air?

Never understood why people put so much value in gold in the first place....nevermind that it costs a fortune to even get an oz these days

No I haven't heard of those..

Thats fine and all but why not just pay off your visa every month. It seems amex just has less flexibility

NutJob answered some of this but it also comes down to Prestige and when I say Prestige I mean AMEX has awesome customer service, they give a crap about you (as much as a lender can I guess), they have great fraud controls and try and work with you. It has become more of an everymans card but it still kind of isn't and is still for people with good credit who know how to control their spending and finances. It's why corporations give out AMEX cards etc..

it's why you shop at Bloomingdales vs some other store. Better customer service, better experience etc. It's why you buy from Apple b/c better customer service better experience.

Amex has those things.

Also Visa and Mastercard are just payment networks. They aren't offering you credit, some bank is and they'll jack up rates, do all kind of song and dance to you. Visa and mastercard just are the "terminals" and network setup to transact.

I would expect this kind of cheating from PayPal but not of Apple. Even if PayPal is the one who has the money, Apple should be the bigger and better company and refund it to him directly. They have more ability to fight with PayPal than he does and they can spare a few thousand dollars easily.

As for all of you people who seem to think the average person has a $3,000 money cushion--what planet are you living on!? You must make a 6-figure salary or something! I make $62,000 a year but because I live in one of the most expensive metro areas on the east coast (second only to NYC probably) I very nearly live paycheck to paycheck. If I went even without one, I would suffer. Building up a $3,000 nest egg would takie me years! The only place I even have that kind of money is in my 401(k) account. I think some people need to get a reality check.

It seems to me like Apple has a glitch in their systems and I think they need to figure it out--there shouldn't be any excuse for that kind of error.

paid for Lion with my debit card and was only charged once... and yes, I just checked to make sure. kinda sad that I'd have to in the first place, though.

Amex gave me a card with a $15k limit on it and I had ZERO income. Not sure there screening process is all that better than any of the other cards out there. Not to mention it was 0% for 15 or 18 months and all I had to do was pay the minimum balance every month. Not sure how they are any different from any other card out there.

Umm. You should have at least a few months of savings preferably a year. This is why you shouldn't live paycheck to paycheck.

This is kind of dumb. It's an accounting error. They will reversethe charges, and maybe even give him (or anyone else affected similarly) Lion for free. Move along, people.

wow that sucks, especially when it has yet to be resolved.

Reminds me of some problems I had with ATT before, that didn't have to do so much with charges but with their customer service

So, that would be a pride of Lions. Good thing it ships with a Safari.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

American Express = Charge Card.

Visa / Mastercard = Credit Card.

There are subtle differences, the main one being you pay the AMEX in full every month. You can't snake around paying 20 bucks a month minimum payments on a few thousand dollar balance running up interest.
(having one I won't call prestigious but you need to have good credit. If you do fail to pay the balance in full they crush you beyond belief with interest.)

It is the responsbile way to control your finances. You only spend what you have. If you have 500 in cash in your checking account. Only spend 500 on the AMEX. use that 500 to pay the AMEX.

Not all AmEx cards are charge cards. I have the AmEx Clear card which is a credit card. I can carry a balance month to month, but I don't. I pay it off each month.

You know you're using a credit card correctly if it could suddenly switch to a charge card and you'd never notice the difference.

gizmodo=macrumors

and vice versa

cheers to you both

Not surprising since they look at your credit rating as the decisive factor, like most credit cards. Personally, Amex has turned me down even though I was earning big figures.

You can eat gold, it just comes out the other end undigested. But yeah as and investment it sucks right now. Buy at the top of the market! Lose all your money! People who think that gold is somehow more real than paper money have no idea, and probably think that governments beam thoughts into their head. Oh no! Must... resist... command... to... delete... that... sentence...

Another responsible way to control finances is to use a Visa/Mastercard/Discover that offers cash back. Just use it the same way you would AMEX, that is, pay it off every month. My family earns several hundred dollars cash back every year. Its like a nice little discount on things we were going to buy anyway. I have no idea what the interest rate is on my Visa, I never carry a balance so it is immaterial.
