this sort of reminds me of people who say "i need an iPhone"

YOU DO?

i thought people only needed air food water and shelter..

you mean you WANT an iPhone..

sorry prolly don't have anything to with anything but its a thought that came across my mind.. ya don't NEED lion.

Stop F--king around and give the guy his money back.
You don't need to investigate just stop being money sharks and do it.

You got peanut butter on my chocolate!!

You got chocolate in my Peanut butter!!

I've had a beef with PayPal for the last several months. I sold an iPhone to a guy in New Jersey and he wanted it shipped overseas, so he paid for the extra shipping and I shipped it where he wanted it.
Live and learn. That's a common fraud problem on ebay. Never sell/ship anything out of state unless you're looking for trouble, big dollar or popular electronics especially. You're never covered unless you ship to a paypal address that's verified—which is usually done with a credit card that actually matches the billing address of the cardholder.

I used to be really against credit cards, but I totally am becoming a believer in recent days. Thinking of starting one up to avoid this garbage myself.

If you're against the idea of a credit card, look into a charge card from American Express. I never ever buy anything on credit, so a credit card is of no use to me. However, the Amex consumer protection (Amex is the best in the business when it comes to disputing charges), the extended warranties (1 extra year over what the manufacturer offers on everything you buy on the card) the rewards, and the travel perks are awesome.

If this had happened to someone using a credit card or charge card of any sort, it all would have been sorted with a simple call to the credit card company.

I got charged 22 times!

I can't believe this happened to someone else!! When I purchased it I received 4 bills for Lion in my account (I only had enough money for 4 of them for I transferred money out earlier that day). So 18 of them were declined but my bank is still trying to work it out because Apple said that they can't do anything for they can't see that I have been charges 22 times! This is really weird, Apple really needs to look into this issue. :(

While amusing, I'm slightly disappointed that this is front-page news.

EDIT: I should clarify my reasoning, since some people seem to misunderstand. This is a freak event (or a few, apparently) related only to PayPal, and it seems more worthy of the former Page 2.

Despite whose fault it is (Apple's or Paypal's) at least the Apple customer service should have resolved the problem and issued a refund x121 to this guy. They are supposedly the best customer service in the world.

It's not just nice Apple things that deserve to be on first page. "Freak" events are entitled too.

Downloads!

Now I know the reason why Apple sold millions of copies of the OS X Lion on first day of release! We'll hear SJ bragging this millions of copies downloaded on his next keynote.

This is why you NEVER use a debit card for any on-line purchases. If there's a mistake when you use a credit card, it's the banks money that is tied up, not yours. If you use a debit card, your money can get tied up while a dispute is being worked out.

And, no ones being a thief here. It's normal for disputes to take time to chase down who has the money and who owes who. My x-girlfriend works in credit card fraud and she saw this type of thing all the time. They would always recommend never using your debit card for on-line purchases.

Yup, that's their policy alright. Taught me to read the fine print next time. However as for PayPal, there will never be a "next time." I don't need any more of their fine print ******** up my day. ;)

blond37 stands up and applauds!! bravo well said.. some here have said $4k is the bank is ok to buy lion for $30. i disagree!
lol some of you are so conceded....

I'm sure every college student in America has at least $10k in their bank account..... right?

I'm sure everyone in America with a $100,000 salary could stand to not be paid for an entire year and still manage all of their bills and everything else right?

So since according to you, we shouldn't even be allowed to spend less than 1% of the amount of money in our bank accounts, how much should we be able to spend? .5%? So in order to buy a cheeseburger at McDonalds you are suggesting that one has at least $500? If you want a $20,000 car you should ensure that you have around half a million dollars right? Get out of here, not everyone has that much money, and people who don't shouldn't be told they aren't allowed to spend $30 because they have ONLY $4000 in their bank.

Dude... They probably can't unless they can see on their end it was charged. If it's a paypal glitch and Apple gives a refund, guess who's out the money?

They need to find out who has the money first. This is what investigations are all about...and besides... Don't use your debit card and it's not your problem!

I guess he should've linked his itunes account to a credit card. That way he could still pay his mortgage.

Gonna have to agree with you here. Anyone who links any account to a bank card is pretty clueless financially speaking.

Apple Charged me 6 more times!

But I can't imagine being charged 122 times! But now I'm effed for my car payment due tomorrow!! Totally broke for the next few days. Specially when there was credit card fraud two weeks ago that I'm waiting to be reimbursed for. But this tops it. I have the worst luck ever!!:(

not that I disagree with you, but not everyone has a credit card, or a credit card with a high enough limit to not always pay with their bank account.

For example, an 18 year old college student, who may not have a CC, or maybe they have one with a very low limit (<$500). Obviously they would have been able to pay for something cheap like Lion with that card, but other items (rent, a macbook, tv, etc) might need to be payed through a bank account or there is no way to pay for it at all.

I personally don't use any credit cards, all I have is a debit card. I think credit cards need to die a quick death, but that's another story.

Now, I think that this is a major screw up by Paypal for the one in the story, but I think Apple has some issues here as well based on the comments posted.

Luckily I was only charged once (to an iTunes gift card that I got at a 20% discount at target a couple months ago), but I would be extremely upset if I were charged multiple times like that.

My husband works in the very department of paypal dealing with this. He already knew about it when I asked him. It is Apple's system automatically charging for this. PayPal has tens of thousands of customers other than Apple that are not having this issue. It's between Apple and PayPal, yes, but it's not on PayPal's side.

Also, Apple is refunding any NSF fees that anyone's bank gets, since most people have their PayPal linked to a bank account. (And if you know anything about that, while Apple can refund, there is no way to stop an electronic bank transfer. Not PayPal or Apple's fault.)

Not really a reason to get mad at PayPal, TBH. Apple, definitely. Even our most loved mothership has errors from time to time.

Don't use paypal or a "check card" for purchases like this and make sure that you don't use developer betas to buy stuff.

Even if you have bad credit, you can use prepaid iTunes cards or prepaid Visa/Mastercard credit cards to limit the potential damage and anyone can buy one of those.

Apple deals very promptly with such issues.

When Lion was available in the Apps store I downloaded Lion and Lion Server but there were delays and in the end I was overcharged three times.

I contacted the Apps store and they replied very quickly issuing a refund which was received by my bank within a couple of days.

The issue was likely helped by my eagerness and impatience to download the products in the first hours of release, but Apple corrected the problem without any hassle.

Great customer service.
