I agree and disagree... there were obvious problems with the site. I noticed changes come and go throughout the day as their web devs were clearly working on it trying to throw in stuff like the AJAX overlay spinners to avoid full screen refreshes... things that should have been done before the server massacre occurred. This part, of course, was Apple's fault. Once they got that fixed and it was pushed out to all the servers, then AT&T folded.

This was all based on observation, no inside sources here!

Agree and disagree. Because even though Apple used the AJAX spinners, there were still instances were you couldn't even get to "Check Eligibility" screen, and that is not on AT&T's side.

Im impressed with number but it was expected

I don't see how Apple can overlook the obvious here. You have 3g owners and 3gs owners. Obviously you have to expect that most 3g owners who decided not to upgrade to 3gs were going to hit up the iphone 4.

I saw at least 700,000 so now because you were so busy telling us about face time that only works anywhere you can use skype/ichat etc.. you could have been making more iphones!!

At&t sucks!! I love the iphone. Ugh.....

I think the numbers are skewed

Here's my experience from yesterday:

Went to att.com to order yesterday at 6 AM EDT. Made it through all the screens in about three minutes, entered my credit card info, and clicked "Place Order". My browser sat there for about 60 seconds and then I got a message that it had timed out. No confirmation screen, no confirmation e-mail. When I tried to check my orders on att.com, it said I had no orders.

Thinking that the order didn't go through, I tried again several times on att.com, and at about 2 PM EDT, I was able to place an order and get to a confirmation screen with a number, which I printed. About 30 minutes later, I got an e-mail informing me that AT&T had cancelled this order.

At this point, I downloaded the Apple Store app and reserved a phone at my nearest Apple Store that way.

About 6 PM EDT last night, I decided to try again--this time at apple.com. After three or four attempts, I was able to add a phone to the cart for 6/24 delivery and checkout. I received the e-mail confirmation from Apple, and figured I was all set.

This morning, I woke up to find that AT&T charged my card $212.93. I went to att.com and it was now showing that I have an order (that is not backordered) consisting of a 16 GB black iPhone and a SIM card. Since there was no way to cancel the order on AT&T's site and they had already charged my card, I went to apple.com and cancelled my order there. I received an e-mail stating that because I had cancelled my order, I would not be charged.

Keep in mind that all of these different orders and reservations are for one line of service. I suspect I could've left my order on apple.com in place and I would've had two iPhone 4's at the subsidized rate delivered to me on launch day.

Until I get a shipping confirmation from AT&T, I am keeping my reservation at my local Apple Store for 6/24. I suspect a lot of other people are potentially in the same boat as I am after yesterday's debacle -- multiple phones coming to them from different places.

If many people receive multiple subsidized phones on launch day, they'll sell the extra phones on eBay and make a couple hundred bucks per phone, most likely.

Trust me, no. The servers would have copped, but the bandwidth would have not been enough, hence you would still get back server not responsing error messages. Even though the servers are up and running and could handle much more load.

No, sorry, but this is simply incorrect. The server load is far from unusual in e-commerce and grown up business solutions, and there are more than adquate solutions on the marketplace to connect them together with sufficient throughput.

The AJAX spinners were only a tip of the iceberg. I'm sure there is a lot of work that can be done in the backend code of the Apple Store.

Thank God I was able to pre-order! I would not want to be anywhere near an Apple or AT&T store on the 24th with this kind of demand.

WTH does this mean? You have one reserved, but really, you don't? lol?
My guess is that when they are talking about reservation, they aren't talking about the phone, but rather your upgrade for the account. That's why they say "pre-authorization"

Heck, they could even get the itunes guys to help. They handle a ton of transactions a day.

I wouldn't count on it. I suspect walk-in supplies will be SEVERELY limited. They'll have enough trouble having stock to fulfill all of their pre-orders.

I doubt that is true. This is 600,000 out of the millions they will likely have for launch. The previous launches at our store of choice have yielded a pile of hundreds of them. I'm guessing that this is the difference between 100 and 200 in-store, for example. Not 20 vs. 200.

In this case, Apple must be doing some serious reconsiderations of their current server design and adding more capacity.

Very true.

If you run with the crowd you will get crushed by the crowd.

I don't see why it would be so prohibitive for them (both Apple AND AT&T) to have a massive amount of servers to be able to handle the rush.
Servers are easy, getting the software to work correctly under massive load isn't. Besides you mis the important issue the demand greatly exceeded their estimates. Indications now are ten times last years sales that is pretty surprising.
Sure it'd be a waste for most of the year, but the frustration faced by me and EVERYONE else yesterday was ridiculous for a 4th year in a row now!
If a lemming runs over a cliff to his death is it his fault for running with the crowd or is it the herds fault?

My position is that you have nobody to blame but yourself here. You need to learn to stand on your own two feet and navigate this world free of the herd. Once you do so your self respect will go up and you can divorce yourself from these issues.
I haven't heard of one story where the person was able to order smoothly and/or quickly.
So?

Really so?
Now here's a question, would Verizon be able to handle this amount of load on a single day?

-Brian
That question is so ignorant as to class this whole message as crap. Contrary to what has been indicated in the press Verizon isn't any better than AT&T. Especially with respect to predicting consummer demand. Remember they originally had a shot at iPhone and couldn't grasp why it would be a hot seller.

Locally I had a Verizon phone before the iPhone and can say there is no difference in performance. More so Verizon is a real pain in the a$$ when you have to do business with them. They wanted to turn every conversation into an effort to sell something else. AT&T on the otherhand hasn't bothered me with that.

I'm trying not to be hostile here but this crap really needs to be addressed because Apple, AT&T and all of it's other launch partners got swamped. In a very real sense they had numerous servers going into overload.

hmmmm....600,000 doesnt sound that much for having so many problems with the ATT and Apple websites to do the pre-orders. And I would like to know exactly why Radio Shack and Best Buy had the pre-order option disallowed from their stores at the very last second. If it wasnt for my Radio Shack employee calling me late monday night I would never have known because Apple doesnt seem to keep their customers updated! Trust me I love my iphone 3GS just not so sure about Apple right now.

I'm inclined to think that this doesn't include reservations, since those aren't actually orders with credit cards attached to them.

Impressive either way. I'm glad I managed to squeak through last night around dinner time.

WHITE iPHONE 4?????

When will the white iphone 4 be available???????

Why has Apple been completely silent on this?

How many times did each of those 600K try to place their order, plus all the people trying to reserve one...

--Preorders will be the priority for Apple. I don't buy this July 6th crap. They are more than capable to full-fill these preorders. Good lucky camping on the 24th. Two people walk in then the genious bar goes to lunch.

Have Fun!!

Is anyone else who's had an iPhone since the beginning somewhat upset about how now everyone has one.?

You just nailed my biggest issue wth the iPhone (and Apple in general) right now. Choosing Mac over PC used to mean counter-culture and being distinct. Now, it is the norm and common.

Congrats Mac users, we are officially the otherwise of the 1984 commercial!!!

Munster Estimate

If the estimate is 9,500,000 phones this quarter (Apr-Jun) then that's 730,000 iphones a week.
Next quarter (Jul-Sept) is traditionally a bigger quarter so they must be ramping production of iphone 4 up above this figure - maybe 1,000,000 a week to keep up with anticipated demand in the next quarter, even before the pre-orders started.

After many frustrating attempts on-line and trying to reach 1-800-MY APPLE, I called my local Apple Store and was told to place the pre-orders using the new Apple Store iPhone app. It worked flawlessly for the first order and then failed on my attempts to pre-order new phones for my wife and son. I later stumbled upon a reference on Apple's website that said "iPhone pre-orders are limited to one per Apple account". No issues once I made this adjustment.

Apple could have done a better job of promoting this interface and also providing a more useful diagnostic in the app regarding the "one per account limitation". All it said was something like "unable to complete your order at this time".

An a press release that the international release will be postponed due to "unexpected" high demand in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ...
