How weird - i'm trying to activate a new UDP line from Apple. But I don't want to use the phone I bought with it... instead I went to Verizon to switch that line to a phone that was previously on the account (a 3G phone, if that matters).
I believe you must activate the phone you bought the line with at least when you add a line through Verizon that is the case.

Also, 3G phones have a different feature code for their UDP plan than LTE phones.

----------

Maybe it's because you are going from a lte phone (the one you purchased via new udp line to a 3G phone. Not sure.
I am sure that is a problem when you are trying to activate a new line. The 3G UDP line is a different feature code from the 4G LTE UDP feature code.

----------

Let me make this easier for you... Just call *228 from your 3G phone, put in the number you want that phone to be on, and then enter your account passcode, or if you don't have one, the last 4 digits of the primary account holder's SSN. It will activate the phone on that line for you. Make sure it's a smartphone, and not just a 3G dumb phone though, or you will lose your unlimited data!
gtk! Yes - NEVER put a basic phone on a UDP line as you WILL LOSE UDP!!!!!

Just picked up my 3rd plus time to sell sell sell.

They didn't make me pay a deposit this time SMDFH
Are the Pluses back in stock or is it a hit or miss kind of thing?

Do you have free mobile to any mobile minutes? If so, it won't work. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ADD A LINE THROUGH APPLE OR ANYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT VERIZON.

I can confirm this. When I switched from 700m (with mobile to mobile) to 450m (without mobile to mobile), I was suddenly able to order more plans.

The beauty is I can switch back and forth whenever I want.

What?!!?!?!!?!?!?!?

What do you mean you can switch back and forth whenever you want?

CAN YOU SHOW ME A SCREEN SHOT??!?!?!?!?!?!!?!??

Can you share which exact plans you are switching between?

What is mobile to any mobile? Is that the friends and family feature?

I think you can change the amount of minutes online without affecting the data plan part.
Right but with our plan that has free mobile to any mobile minutes, if you try to do that online, you lose the free mobile to any mobile minutes. And when you do, then you can order more UDP lines.

However, if we can switch back at will, then we can manufacture UDP lines WITH free mobile to any mobile lines. GOLDMINE!!!!!!

I like gold

I wanted to transfer the new line OFF of the new phone, so that I can sell the phone independently.

Oh, well that is in fact easier. That won't prevent the new user from switching it back to a 4G device later, right?

why don't you just sell the phone without the SIM? the line is tied to the SIM not the phone

I believe he is trying to not activate the phone before he sells it. Plus, he must have another phone on the line to free up the phone he is selling to be put on someone else's account.

Received additional udp line with iPhone 6 ordered through apple.com. Can not activate using included sim. What could be the problem?

Could you elaborate on this? Specifically:

he must have another phone on the line to free up the phone he is selling to be put on someone else's account.

Assuming you do an in-store pickup, I was under the impression that you could AOL the new unlimited line, open the phone box, remove the SIM, then sell the phone.

What am I missing?

Every line must have a phone on it unless you can convince Verizon to put a dummy ESN on the line. They used to do that, but now will not do it.

However, even if you could find a dummy ESN to put on your line, all of the dummy ESNs that used to work were for basic lines and if you put one of those on a UDP line, then you would drop the data plan and not be able to put it back on and so you would have a 2 year contract on a line w/o UDP.

And a phone cannot be on 2 Verizon lines at once.

Since you must have a phone on every line and b/c a phone cannot be on 2 Verizon accounts at the same time, if you sell the iP6 w/o first putting another phone on your line the person to whom you sell the phone will not be able to activate the phone on their Verizon account. Now - if you sell the phone to someone who is going to use it on ATT or TMobile or international carrier, then it will be OK. But if anyone from Verizon wants to use the phone, they won't be able to unless you put another phone on the line.

Thanks for the info. I'm still confused.

Once you do the in-store pickup, and they scan the phone, and you open it/turn it on, it is activated on that line correct? Then you do an AOL with that line, someone else activates their phone on that UDP, and your iPhone now has a useless SIM inside, which you remove before selling the phone.

Maybe we are talking about slightly different things.

I know you are pretty knowledgeable on this, so my apologies if that is redundant, or only tangentially related to your response.

I just edited it perhaps now it is more clear.

Correct, but the poster who prompted this does not want to turn on the phone and activate it.

Then you do an AOL with that line
Now you are bringing AOLing lines into it. I wasn't talking about that step. I was talking about selling the phone.

someone else activates their phone on that UDP
Well then at that point you would satisfy the requirement that every line has to have a phone on it.

I see now, I misunderstood what he was trying to do.

Follow-up questions:
Do you know if you can AOL a newly created line without ever turning on the phone?
related question:
Is there a difference between what happens when the Apple Store employee scans the phone box, vs. turning the phone on for the first time?

I do not know, but Verizon's AOL department could tell you. So do in-store p/u for the phone, then come home and ask Verizon's AOL department if you can.

I doubt it as every line must have a phone on it. The phone won't be on the line until you turn it on.

However, perhaps you could put another 4G LTE phone on the line and then call Verizon's AOL department, but I was under the impression that new lines had to be activate with the phone you purchased on the line if you did purchase a phone on the line. I could be wrong, idk.

yes, the scan activation actually creates the line if you chose in-store p/u. If you did ship to home, those lines appear time activated based on estimated shipping date, but that isn't always consistent.

Thanks.

Just so I'm clear:

So the in-store scanning "creates the line".

And turning the phone on "activates that SIM to that line"?
