I couldn't agree more about UPS, but this is a huge contract for them and they want to hold on to it. For those of us who've been doing this for 9 years, we remember when it was FedEx that had Apple's launch business. So UPS works very hard to execute on launches. Even though I have had numerous problems with UPS over the years, NONE of them have involved my iPhone Launch products.

View attachment 729089 When I was ordering from the Apple store app at 3 am ET on Friday morning, I had a glitch which I’m now wondering is worth pursuing.

I managed to get connected at about 3:02, ordered the Verizon silver 256 GB model, signed up for the Apple Upgrade program, and then put in the payment information. There was already 11-10 mail delivery date but I was able to choose pickup on 11-3 at an Apple store near me. The next screen let me choose what time to pick up and I chose 3 pm, hit next and then the screen was just hanging forever. But it seemed as though my enrollment in Apple upgrade and payment was already complete.

App was frozen so I went to a laptop browser and tried to do the order again. When I tried to enroll in the Apple upgrade program it wouldn’t let me, said I already had a reservation(screenshot). I have not, however, gotten any email to complete my order yet. Other people in similar situations seem to have gotten emails to complete their orders. Is this worth pursuing or do I keep my backup order- from Verizon which delivers on 11/15?

Heh...well, the modem in the Verizon phone is faster than the AT&T one (or, at least, that's the case with the 8's). But, whether you actually see those speeds in real life? Debatable. :)
Hopefully we see Apple adjust the dates for the rest of the pre-orders once all those in the 11/3 club are sorted.

Some of the iPhones have the Qualcomm modem which is capable of gigabit LTE, but is purposely crippled by Apple since the Intel modems they source aren’t capable of those speeds yet. Apple doesn’t want some users to have a different experience (faster speeds) than others. They went with Intel as a supplier because Qualcomm charges crazy royalties compared to industry and Apple doesn’t want to source all from them. Apple will make their own modem/wireless chipset within a year or 2. You will not see any faster speeds on the Qualcomm than the Intel unless you were able to somehow hack it.

Well, what a joke is the IUP and the Apple Store App lol. I placed an order 2.5 hours AFTER pre orders went live on AT&T's website on my phone lol...that order is preparing to ship for Nov. 3rd and the apple store app order is still showing delivery dates of Nov. 17-24th lol. I'm disappointed to say the least...there's no way to use this AT&T next phone as my IUP phone is there?

Apple has been a big joke this year. For the first time ever my T-Mobile phone purchased through the carrier has shipped before my Apple store order.

I second that. Never any issues with my iPhone launch products.

The Verizon iPhone contains the GSM modem, not just CDMA. Qualcomm has patents on the CDMA technology. Funny, CDMA was invented by a movie star - Hedy Lamarr. I know what you’re going to say.... “That’s Hedley!”

They're still using Qualcomm for the Verizon/Sprint phones because Verizon/Sprint haven't yet shut down their CDMA networks. That's the difference between these models. The AT&T/T-Mobile models don't support CDMA.
The reason that everyone uses Qualcomm for their CDMA modems is two-fold. 1) They OWN the CDMA protocol - so anyone else has to pay Qualcomm licensing when they make one (so Qualcomm's usually cheaper) and 2) Qualcomm actually makes a good, fast product, which typically out-performs their competitors - as we've seen with Intel.

Apple/Qualcomm are in a royalty/licensing pissing match right now. In all likelihood when the US carriers shut down their CDMA networks (likely 2019), then Intel may become the sole supplier for the LTE modems Apple uses.

Time will tell if Apple wants to make their own modems or not....maybe make it part of their SoC? :)

Can I ask why you and so many people on this forum chose to put in multiple orders to try and ensure a Nov 3rd date? Seems selfish to take up multiple reservations if you intend to only buy 1. If I’m missing something about your situation I apologize in advance.

I ordered with the hope of getting Nov 3rd, but was prepared to wait if I didn’t get in fast enough. Thankfully I got Nov 3rd, but it never occurred to me to put in multiple orders to get what I want.

One,what I went through with last year’s reservation I didn’t want to go through with it this year. I preordered like everyone else and T-Mobile canceled my order for no reason and I didn’t receive my 7+ until the middle of October. I had to reach out to Legere’s team to have them expedite my order when they realized it was still sitting in their warehouse with my UPS label. Two, Apple’s app and website didn’t come up for me until 3:10am while I got through with T-Mobile earlier. Whichever phone ships first determine which one will be canceled. Either way someone will get bumped because of my cancellation.

I was just discussing the speeds that each are capable of. Qualcomm’s modem is faster than Intels if not limited by Apple. I agree that Apple will move away from Qualcomm the moment they can. Apple has been moving towards making as much of the phone as they can from a chipset perspective. Gives them greater control and is cheaper in the long run.

I still cannot believe I ordered at 3:08am eastern and got 11/17-11/24 shipping window, when att still had launch day available at 6:30am!! Wtf, last year I ordered from att at 3:05 and couldn’t get launch day so went with Apple this year. Can’t win

Whether it is or isn't throttled is part of the litigation between these two. (I could certainly see Apple doing that).
Now, how much of that you see in real life, with how congested the carrier's base stations are??? :)

Blame Apple for giving the US carriers pre-allocation stock. Me, I'd love to see Apple just sell to everyone directly, so we all have an equal chance of getting a launch day device when pre-orders open.

I would too, also I would like for Apple to figure out another way of blocking scalpers other than requiring an account with one of the 4 major carriers, for launch pre-orders. I don't think any carrier should have any say in a phone I buy for full price from Apple.

You guys need to start lobbying the FCC to do away with Carrier locking of devices. They've done so in Europe and now Canada. Get it done...no more Carrier models (well...once Verizon/Sprint finally get rid of CDMA, you guys can have the same models for all of the US).
If we could get the US carriers out of the subsidy business and everyone that wants to finance using Apple's IUP, that would help too. :)

Yeah same...my ATT order is preparing to ship while apple's is still showing the same dates. I FINALLY got a chat agent and they literally just gave me the same information that I could see myself on the website. Horrible. I gave them a piece of my mind, LOL. I made sure to tell the agent though it wasn't her fault or directed towards her but if she could pass along to the higher reps my experience that would be great. I'm keeping both orders and selling one to make a profit off it. At least for my inconvenience i'll make a pretty penny lol.

That's cool. My bro did it early too and had to wait an extra day last year. Hopefully it won't be any trouble for doing it too early this year.
Oh shoot! I did it early too! Why did he have to wait? Did he pick a CC or a UPS Store? Argh
[doublepost=1509368985][/doublepost]Would it not change the estimated date of delivery on the app in that case?

I honestly don't mind waiting another week for the phone to get here...but its the whole way it's being handled what's turning me off lol. They don't give a crap if you're a new IUP or existing IUP member or if you're paying in full or upgrading. To them it's the same crap because the product is getting sold regardless lol. So, every year i'll just have to finess the finessers. :D:p

Just spoke with UPS on the phone, and they said as long as you make the request to Hold for Pickup BEFORE it registers a Destination Scan on the tracking, there will be no delay. Once the Destination Scan takes place, they cannot guarantee that any changes will not delay the delivery date until the Change Request has processed. Sometimes they are able to still meet the same date, but she said the earlier you request it, the more likely it is to be still on time. My request to Hold for Pickup is still pending, but the UPS International department (1-800-782-7892) assured me that it will process today without any effect on the delivery date, and it will be ready for pickup ~8:30AM on 11/3

Is there a way of seeing if you have a destination scan already? This is the order in question that still says “exception” but is showing as 3rd delivery..
[doublepost=1509369837][/doublepost]Damn me for not waiting. Then again, several pages back, somebody else was saying they always do it as early as possible and the recommendation is to change for CC ASAP. Argh. What to believe!
