The wife didn't have an upgrade until March 2013 so I gave her mine. She wanted the 32GB White so alas I will hold onto my iPhone 4 until first quarter of next year.

Tried to order through ATT this morning, but website was not working properly. I ordered through Apple and got the Oct 5 delivery date for white 64gb. 
Went back to ATT to see if I could get a better date, but now I am no longer showing as upgrade eligible. I wonder if I cancel the Apple order if I will still be able to get the 9-21 date from ATT and if they will now show me as upgrade eligible. Oct 5 is three weeks away!!
BTW - I preordered the new iPad in the spring and it arrived one week ahead of the scheduled delivery date apple had provided. I am thinking I won't be so lucky this time.

My order status is now showing as "Preparing for Shipment" (Delivers 9/21). I ordered on the Apple Store App in the UK at exactly 8AM UK time (midnight California time).
Did you try updating the delivery address at apple.com/orderstatus ? Might save you another annoying call.
Does anyone here really believe that they sold out in 1 hour or is it more likely that the order status is broken? I ordered a 64 gig iphone, which according to what I've read is less in demand than others about 4am Eastern time and order status says Oct 5. I find this hard to believe. If it turns out that the Oct 5 date is actually correct I suppose I'll cancel my order on just go to the store in person.

I received my confirmation email from Apple at 3:02am EST.

Thats a good point, i remember the same was the case for 64 4S. they never ran out of them.
A wild guess here, but I think Apple assembled less 64GB iPhones initially at release because of supply/demand.
They are most likely more stocked on 16GB iPhones than 64GB.
I got a 32 and 64, both black, on 2 orders. One email at 3:25 am eastern. The other at 3:29. Both through the Apple Store App. Both are currently at processing, 9/21 delivery.

Here's to hoping. Guess we'll find out in a few days for sure. I for one can't camp out. My kids are home from school that day and my husband works.
so is it possible to change the shipping address on orders placed through the apple store? as in deliver to a business address instead of my billing address?
Ordered mine at 1:10am MST on the Apple Store app on my 3GS. Right now, it's still processing. Charge went through on the credit card (?).
How did you order at midnight Central time? Pre-Orders didn't start here until 2:00am.
Sorry I think the way I wrote it was kinda misleading. What I meant to say is I ordered right after midnight Pacific Standard Time.
I finally did when I had them fix my shipping address since it didn't include my apartment number for some reason. 3 hours in being hung up on or holding and I finally got through.
