It means that it's preparing for shipment. The gnomes are working as hard as they can. They have short legs and tiny arms. This means they are not able to move packages that fast. Although the iPhone box is small, it is still large for a little gnome man or woman.

It actually must mean, at least for many people, that it's preparing for the NEXT shipment since many IP5s have made it half way around the world while that order status remains unchanged.

My cables came today :)

Nah. Mine is still preparing for shipment, but both packages are at a UPS center in Nashville and Louisville.

Yes, that's what I mean. They already shipped, right? So the status should say shipped, not preparing for shipment. At least status should say preparing for next shipment. What am I missing?

It's safe to assume that the status will not change till Thursday night or Friday morning when it is on the way to the shipping address. Don't know why they are doing it that way but o well.

You're missing that apple hasn't sent anyone in the U.S. tracking numbers. Right now, preparing for shipment, delivers 9/21 means the same as processing, delivers 9/21, regardless of whether you can find your package on UPS with a reference number. Evidently apple doesn't want to call anything "shipped" until it's en route to your city/house, whether or not it's moving with UPS. Kind of unusual, yes, but if no one found a tracking number it might make more sense.

I think it's funny to think of what this thread would look like if no one found a tracking number on their own. We'd all be blasted with tracking numbers at once from Apple tomorrow showing movement for days before we knew about it. End result the same: 9/21 phones delivered 9/21. Guess one benefit is that people have been able to hold and reroute.

The status will most likely change from "preparing for shipment" to "Shipped" once the packages have left Louisville or where ever it is coming from, to your local sorting facility.

Remember I said my local Apple store has a bunch of lightning-30pin adapters? I just called them and they're sold out. Every other Apple store/authorized retailer is also sold out.

I just ordered some cheap ones off of ebay. Since I'm waiting anyway, I might as well save money!

Apple hasn't shipped yet to apple.com customers in the US, they have been preparing to ship by pre-staged some phones in warehouses and making up some labels (someone here figured out a back door so we can track them). When Apple gives the go ahead to UPS, Apple will send you a shipping notice with tracking number and UPS will deliver the phone sometime Friday. There is no specific time Friday, just sometime Friday... like waiting for the cable guy :)

They're not updating statuses because they don't want certain organized (or unorganized) groups trying to pull any oceans 11 with our precious cargo. Of course, I'm kidding :) or maybe I'm not

Am I the only one that still has the status of departure from Addison, IL as of 9/17 at 6 PM?

I have one phone in that lot, there are a couple others here. Not to worry, the lot is actually in Louisville but the public UPS system is not picking up the status, just like that flight some seem to be anxious about.

sorry for double post

i called apple, explained i wanted to pick it up, they put in a request to ups. today, my status says:

not sure if that means it's at my center now...i don't understand it.

I think it means that once it's shipped to your local UPS facility, they shouldn't put it on a truck because you're going to pick it up. I hope they let you pick it up on the 21st because it looked like the first pickup date was the 24th.

I went to my apple store yesterday, they told me they will have them available on Friday.

I'm afraid some of our Siris are going to have a drawl and an affinity for chitlins with this extended stay in Louisville
