Assuming this is 'white-label' Gemini and not feeding Google's voracious data-maw, I'm happy with it in the short-term. I do hope that Apple doesn't abandon developing their own edge-based LLM. I think large-models are both over-hyped and also the future, and Apple's ability to blend software and hardware could still be a great long-term advantage if it doesn't abandon this in-house model development.

I'll do you one better. I'll keep my non-AI capable iPhone 14 for longer so even if I do decide to upgrade to an AI-capable version of iOS, AI still won't be able to run on it. 😂
Apple can't compete against Google, who is the original creator of LLM models.
In the long run, even OpenAI will have to submit themselves to Google.
Also, Google has alot of experience with AI for smartphones. So it makes perfect sense.

It’s clear Apple is incapable of closing the technological gap it has accumulated over the year. This is a confirmation cook leadership has been extremely poor and he has missed the technological trends and focussed Apple’s efforts on the wrong things (Apple car, Apple Vision Pro… ). He has to go.
Agreed but this is still a spectacular failure from Apple and given that AI/LLM’s is the key technology now, they’ve left themselves very vulnerable.
Let’s hope they’re working on their own model. But I don’t think they’ll ever be able match Google.
Apple has chronically underinvested in Siri for too long and to them ‘the cloud’ means a CDN or storage. For Google it’s a compute platform.
I know I’m going to get lots of haha responses from this but I think their failures with AI will ultimately lead them to ‘merging’ with Google.
Or they can just gradually fade into being someone like Sony. A company who will still make very nice - but not essential - hardware.
To those that still think I’m a fool… Note that alphabet today has a £4tn cap and Apple is $3tn something.
That’s still a lot. But it’s not the valuation of a company who has won from this deal - Alphabet’s valuation is.

yes we want a functional siri and no we don't want another pact with the devil. that's why we're not happy with having to support google on this. apple should have allowed a smorgasbord list to pick from but as usual makes the silliest of mistakes. looking forward to when Tim Cook is finally gone and hopefully a product person replaces him.

An informed decision. Gemini is excellent on mobile, and is all-around a superb AI, even simply using the web interface. It’s the only AI app I have on iPhone. And I trust Gemini answers. Gemini Pro is stellar, as is deep research, and the image and video tools. Same for Google’s TPU silicon.
Very glad it is Gemini. I really hope we get the Pro versions on iPhone.
Of course, queue all the negative comments. Most are grossly uninformed. No, Apple doesn’t need to waste $50 billion building a duplicative LLM, and there are so many reasons not to, the commodification of these models a primary one (hello DeepSeek). Others are doing the work for this commodity.
More fundamentally, many informed researchers say LLMs are just a stopgap, and world models are the way to AGI breakthroughs. Hence LeCun leaving Meta.

Nothing whatsoever make Gemini more suitable for ‘mobile’ devices. There are plenty models (even open source and free ones) small enough to run locally on a smartphone, especially a powerful one with plenty of ram like an iPhone. The issue is that full sized model are way too large and will always run remotely in some large server, so one has to accept that for any non trivial task information will be sent to google and processed in their servers.
Yes. They take it personally if the iPhone hasn't the best camera, the best apps, the best design. Same for other devices or software.
It’s not a perfect world scenario, but if I have the choice between handing over my data to Google - who, let’s face it, already have it - and ChatGPT, I’ll take Google 8 days a week.

yeah I’m quite sure Apple isn’t aware of this as they clearly missed any internal and publicly announced deadline about Siri and Apple Intelligence. They have been caught completely unprepared confirming they missed the technological trends and didn’t not put research effort when it was required. If their plan was to go to Google all along the new Siri would have been released when originally planned. Clearly they tried to develop something internally and failed. I’m quite confident that they’re going to be unable to develop the next step (world model or whatever) as they’re going to be even more complex and Apple was incapable of developing an LLM let alone something more complicated.
Apple is only using Google's model. Not handing over your data to them.
Hopefully using Gemini will make their AI a little "smarter". Right now Apple AI is dumb as a rock. Try speaking to Siri and ask "date and time". She will ALWAYS give you the time only without the date. And if you ask her to refine her answer multiple times, her answer will be "that's not an item on your calendar".

Not fully true.
Apples/Jobs M.O has always been "if you don't have a great direct competitor in-house, you partner with the state of the art partner, then you build something just as good internal then switch to it."
They did this with a few Mac Apps, like Internet Explorer at one point. With how fast Apple Maps and the Yahoo bits were replaced after Jobs passed they were clearly already in the works when he died. It also wasn't logical for Apple to make a YT competitor or search engine so they just didn't. It may have also been part of the deal to get access to Google Maps, that YT be included as an app. Google was THE standard on most those apps when the iPhone came out. it was only logical to partner with them early on.
