Why do you think Wall Street is asking for a 5" iPhone? Because they can see there is a potentially lucrative market that Apple is missing out on. Nobody is asking for a phablet or touchscreen Mac as the market demand has not been proven as yet. Wall Street are only interested in one thing - earnings. If they think Apple is missing a revenue opportunity they will say so, after all they do own the company. Yes Tim Cook et al doesn't own Apple, Wall Street does.

My point is Apple is doing what it wants product wise. And I think these ad campaigns are just reinforcing that. Especially the Wall Street and media need for a constant stream of new, new new. Basically Apple is saying they're not going to follow in Samsung's footsteps flooding the market with product. We don't have a Apple watch or TV (yet) because Apple isn't going to release a product just for the sake of having another product on the market or to satisfy Wall Street's craving for new, new new. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, just that this ad campaign seems to be reinforcing it.

These are definitely better. However in their iOS 7 video during the keynote I noticed the part where they were showing off Airdrop looked like one of those Samsung commercials with similarly dressed hipsters sharing data on their phones. I'm sure it was deliberate and thought it was pretty funny.

Yes, and how true was that S3 commercial, when the guy in the line says: "But we're gonna get that for sure. Maybe not this time, but next time, right?" What do you know? A year later, the iPhone has airdrop...

That's the golden question hahah

This guy?

It certainly is better than a 2-page ad explaining why jobs are being off-shored as much as possible.

You obviously don't understand marketing if you think that. The fact that they highlight "designed in California" is so obviously marketing and branding. If it wasn't they wouldn't even mention it.

You obviously don't understand reality. Apple didn't start designing in California for marketing purposes. The previous poster was trying to somehow discredit the fact that Apple is an American company and also trying to say that the fact that the products are designed in California is "just marketing".

What I was pointing out was that the fact that Apple products are designed in California was reality. Sure you can market and let people know that reality. But it's still something real. On the other hand, Samsung's "Next Big Thing" campaign is just pure marketing. It's not reality. It is staged actors playing out situations dreamed up Samsung's marketing team heads and played out on TV for gullible people.

I thought it was hilarious that this guy was trying to say Apple's campaign about being designed in California wasn't "reality" when it in fact is. Or that I or anyone else who appreciates that fact wasn't living in "reality". Especially in light of the Samsung commercials designed for gullible people based on fake situations.

That's how it works in the U.S. We have a high percentage of people here whose families have emigrated (some very recently) from other countries. It would actually be next to impossible to run a company comprised of people whose entire family history is native to the country. It's a given. You don't have to be pedantic about it.

So, what exactly is your point?

My point is that being designed in california means ****. you take the same people and bring them to NY, they will still be as good.

I understand "Designed by Apple" but in california means nothing to me unless they were all california natives...

Why does it matter if you were born in California or not?

Samsung just came out with a new campaign, coincidentally...

"Samsung Galaxy: Designed in California, Copied in South Korea"

There's a sweaty dude in the add, but on his arm is a 12" phablet ...

"Our products can be used a weights as well!!"

And finally the tag line...

"Samsung, same thing, only cheaper...cuz we stealz Samsung-style."

It matters to me and it matters to millions of other Americans. You need to wake up and go into the real world if you think it doesn't matter to Americans. You must not live here.

And why does it hurt your feelings so much that Apple promotes that its products are designed in California and Americans appreciate that? Is it because of the obvious contrast to Samsung's stuff which is designed in South Korea?

And being designed in America isn't marketing, it's REALITY. Marketing is those made up situations Samsung puts in their "Next Big Thing" ads and the gimmicky "features" they market all over TV and billboards everywhere that people are sick of seeing. That's marketing. Being designed in California is REALITY. Deal with it.

By the way, when the Mac Pro is released you better believe that Apple will be promoting that it is both designed and made in America. And this WILL matter to a LOT of people... even those not even buying a Mac Pro.

Ok I don't know why I'm even discussing this with you. How much is Samsung paying you?

It doesn't "hurt my feelings", but it is pathetic when people just lap it up as if any company has some amazing tie to the country they started in.

Also... I -wish- I was getting paid to post here. But, seriously, if you think any multi-national corporation puts their home country above how much cash they make? BWAHAHAHAHA.

The marketing you're falling for is whether or not it matters where it's designed. It doesn't. Whether a phone is designed in America or Seoul or Moscow or whatever, the phone is still being made in China and sold in America.

What really irks me is this mistaken idea that 100% of the profits from iOS devices stay in America and 0% of Samsung's Android device profits do. It's like you're trying to make this some stupid "us vs them" thing.

Who said it wasn't?

And for the most absurd straw man in your post:

Just wait until Samsung's new ads:

Designed by Samsung in South Korea

It's like Apple is daring them to copy that. Samsung doesn't want to remind Americans that their stuff is not only not made in America but not even designed here either. And all the money Americans pay for Samsung products goes back to Korea.

It's like you haven't read anything I've been responding to, you're just circling the wagons with essentially a "nuh uh" and then finished with a "no u" response.

"Designed by Apple in Canada" would be a lie, wouldn't it?

Seriously, I think "Designed in California" will be much more appreciated than "designed in the USA" in most parts of the world.

Besides, "Designed by Apple in California" really is their signature... Which is what this is all about.

Also, in pushing this idea, the feel of these new ads AND things like going for the name Mavericks for OS X 10.9, I think they're aiming for a "back to their roots" direction.

They could have a picture of Psy holding the latest Samsung device, with the tagline: Copy Samsung style.

Could work...

They're selling "California" as a state of mind, hence "Mavericks". We've got plenty of New Yorkers out here, but all they do is complain about the Pizza.

Nobody out here acts more stereotypically "Californian" than the transplants.

Suffering through East Coast Summers and Winters is probably better for writers, than Industrial Designers.

I don't know. But it obviously matters to Apple. And the think it works for an ad campaign.

Right, because people who have just finished doing workouts have perfect wall street hairdos filled with hair gel, and are freshly showered with clean dry clothes. Do you want reality using Apple's products or do you want Vogue? ;)

Hey, Hollywood movie sex scenes always end showing the amorous couple having perfect hairdos neatly clean and combed, and are freshly showered with clean dry sheets and never sweaty. I guess Hollywood goes Vogue... :D

Meanwhile, looking out for Apple's ad that touts 'All Our Products Are Manufactured by Apple in America.' now that would really be something nice...
