I agree with this. I bought an Apple Watch over the weekend and walking out the door I remembered it doesn’t include a charger. So I had to spend 30 minutes trying to figure out what type of charger it needs since the box doesn’t specify what type of cable is included. Absolute ********
you should have 100 of these blocks in your drawer, if not, ask your neighbor, he has 200 of them in his drawer. They are all over planet earth, the landfill is overflowing with them!!! ;)

Apple should be forced to include a free charger, at time of purchase, to anyone who wants one. Period. To sell a device that can’t be used without additional purchase is just wrong. I get it that many people already have charging bricks and don’t need another charger...those people can choose not to request one. Anyone buying a phone who needs a charger should get one, free of charge.
The issue is everyone will ask for one...

so then you sell the car to someone else and say, oh yeah it doesn't come with tires so you can't test drive it, but buy it anyways, then install your own tires. lol how ridiculous
Your imagination seems quite limited. In a world where a set of tires costs $5,000 and lasts for 500,000 miles, the car dealer would have a set of tires that gets mounted for a test drive and then removed. You would buy one car without tires, add the tires, and then save $5,000 on your next two cars.

So you are saying you have zero USB charging bricks in your house? I have like 20 of them.

this is one stupid analogy.

Actually, there were companies selling iPhones who made a bit of extra money by swapping the Apple chargers in the box with a cheap and dangerous fake charger, and then selling the original Apple chargers for good money. So iPhones did catch fire when they were used with the charger _in the original, resealed box_. Which was not an Apple charger.
Which was totally not Apple's fault.

Wait it took you 30 minutes to figure out what kind of charging brick to buy for an Apple Watch? You can’t be serious 🤦‍♂️

For someone who says "use your brain", you sure could use some reading comprehension lessons.

1. "Evidence" refers to "Apple's motivation": did they do this because they genuinely want to help the environment, or because they're cutting costs and increasing profits? Everyone knows it's the latter, and more power to them, but don't try to lie to people, they can see right through it. Let marketing figure out a way to sell this cost-cutting measure as a benefit to the consumer. Something along the lines of "we discovered that 90% (or whatever) of our users already have a charger, so we're giving you the option of buying one or not, and you pay less if you don't".

2. Leaving that aside for a moment, assume everyone would buy new chargers. In that case, it would be worse for the environment, as you would be producing two boxes instead of one. Therefore, there is at least one situation in which it is worse for the environment. Thus, it's not automatically beneficial for the environment as you claim. Therefore, it's up to you to prove that enough people will forego buying a new charger that it is a net win for the environment. But of course, there's no need to prove that, because as mentioned in point 1, the evidence is for Apple's motivation, not for the environmental benefits.
Nonsense. I have/had a bunch of iPhone/iPad chargers at home which I never used and eventually throw away and I'm surely not the only one. But Apple had to produce them anyway, even though most people didn't really need them.

From working in product development, it’s probably not that simple. If you look at the new parts of the iPhone such as the Lidar sensor, that particular part is really expensive (not even including all the related parts) and removing the charger is probably closer to a wash in costs.

The lidar sensor isn't included in the default iPhone 12 models. And even with the lidars, the pro models still have a huge profit margin nevertheless.

I always think it’s weird people get mad at companies for making money on products people want. Are you expecting everything to be free?
I don't get mad at companies for making money on products that people want. However, I don't fall for PR stunts like this, praising the environmental impacts. Ditching the charger and earbuds, without compensating the price, was clearly and mainly a financial choice by Apple, increasing it's margins even more.

Also, environmental impacts of this choice, including the smaller packaging, may not be what you think:

Have you not seen how much smaller the new boxes are?

How is anyone with an IQ above 0 denying the environmental benefits?

Yes, I've got the small box, the unused USB-C cable is still in it... However, ditching the charger and earbuds, without compensating the price, was clearly and mainly a financial choice by Apple, increasing it's margins even more.

sure, but now you have a phone with fast charging capabilities and you're stuck using a slow old brick to charge your new phone with. if apple truly cared about the environment, they would have done away with the lightning port on the iphone and made it usb c. I wouldn't complain at all about the block then, bc i already have an ipad pro and a macbook air that use that.
I have 2 iPad chargers and 4 regular iPhone chargers. Plus a slew of chargers from other devices as well as outlets with USB ports. Getting another charger is not a plus for me. It just means more crap in our junk drawer.

We don't have many USB-C charging bricks, so had to buy one for my wife's new iPhone 12. Not the greatest moment from Apple, in my opinion, given the switch to USB-C cables (well, on one end, at least... they seem to be determined to hold onto lightning as long as possible...)

Apple had an opportunity to offer these plugs for free as an option for people who purchased a new iPhone. The “doing it for the environment” pillar they were standing on as a reason for not including something that is required to charge your device was quite a stretch.

Did you also not have any USB-A charging cables that would work perfectly well with the iPhone 12?

The issue is everyone will ask for one...
Even in just these type of discussions (of which there have been quite a few) on just online forums quite a few people have said they have plenty and wouldn't want another one, so even just lookin at a small percentage of the user base that the online forum community represents it seems that it would be quite far from even close to most, let alone everyone, that would actually want to or ultimately bother with requesting one.

The home of the Bikini Wax snaps back!

Mee-OWWW.

At least someone's got the gumption to push back against this malarkey...

No worries, Apple will just add an extra $20 (equivalent) to the price in Brazil.

Life goes on. Nothing to get worked up about.
