These are really good ads. I have family visiting for the next week and we were all watching TV last night when one of the ads came on. It got everyones attention and all of my non-tech family members were all commenting how cool it was and then asked me questions about how facetime worked.

I know some young people on here don't get how important it is to share moments with family and kids but Apple and their ad agency certainly do.

I needed it last month when trouble shooting my mum's macbook.

itunes wasn't showing the "accept button"

I had to open up iChat, get her to point the camera at the dressing table mirror and squint to see that she needed to scroll down the page. :D

Wouldn't screensharing have worked better?

I don't think I'll ever understand people on this forum. I've never understood how people can look at an advertisement and say "there's underlying sexist tones in this, she has to ask permission from her boyfriend." She was just showing a drastic haircut. You sound like Jessie Jackson when he said Cleveland wants LeBron because it's a "runaway slave mentality." Stop making huge deals out of nothing. I bet you also hate when they swear on the radio, or I bet you hate when there's sex on TV because it's "corrupting our nation's youth."

Anyways, these commercials are great. Look at every other one of Apple's commercials: Mac/PC were all about putting the competition down, iPad was to look cool, and the iPod was just dancing. These commercials actually show how the feature works and how we could incorporate them into our lives. Who cares if the acting is a little meh, the point still comes across, especially when the apple logo is only shown for 2 seconds at the end. Apple didn't try and brand these with "Droid does what Droid wants when Droid can and droid droid droid." They let the phone speak for itself, making it less about what it is and more about how it will help you.

Genius.

FaceTime

the only thing that bugs me about facetime is the whole wi-fi thing, and i know that's been said a million times.
but you can video chat on a laptop/computer from your house,
doing it with iphone 4 is cool because it's portable. but still, if you can't do it on the go, it seems way less useful/cool.

you pretty much have to sit down and plan to facetime someone, rather than just do it. if you want to show someone something, you can't be like. oh hey, check this out. it's more like, hey man. are you in a wifi area? ok, get to one. now turn on your wifi. alright. now look at this.

I did hear and read that it will be possible to do FaceTime on 3G in the future. It's AT&T that needs to get the network set up to handle it. I do not know how true that is but it makes sense. I also have read some people getting it to work on 3G with a MiFi so I don't think it's to far off.

...really?

It's shmaltzy, conservative, clean, 2-dimensional, benign, unbelievable, vanilla, aggressively mediocre commercial acting.

It's like they raided the rejects at a casting call for Days of our Lives.

wow. a cynic down to the molecular level. undesirable quality. who hurt you?

you might need to call the nine line.

So far FaceTime has NOT been that smooth for me. Not even anywhere near that smooth. Anyone else have choppy quality?

Is it me or is the haircut one a little too stereotypical? The female is almost asking for permission to like her new haircut from the husband/boyfriend.

Am I the only one who got that feeling?

Are you serious? This is what normal people do when they get a drastic haircut. Stop trying to stir a pot that isn't there.

Here is my idea for an ad...

Greg Facetimes up his wife:

Greg: I just finished the interview with DigaMax
(Background) - You see the bars reducing as he is holding his iPhone 4 as they do in the other commercials.
Wife: How did it go?
Greg: Great! I think they are going to offer me the job!
Wife: Wow, now we will finally be able to get that house we have been looking at...
Greg: Yeah, will be perfect to start our family...

You have a voice mail message pops up.

Greg: Huh? Looks like I missed a call. Dang it, just noticed my iPhone 4 is "Seaching..." for signal... I'll call you back...

Greg goes to Visual Messaging.
Message; Hi Greg, This is Tim from DigaMax we called to offer you the job but since we were not able to get ahold of you and we need a answer ASAP we have to move on to the next candidate...

iPhone 4
:apple:

(note: just make sure you hold the phone the right way)

The way Apple uses teenage girls instead of adults in the ads just seems kind of creepy to me - with the "smile" one, throughout the commercial, I see this older guy trying to get this young, vulnerable girl to smile. It's not until the very end that I hear "Dad." Seems creepy. And the one with the bob hair seems awkward and she's young and vulnerable. Sorry, but these commercials just hesitant to buy MY daughter an iPhone 4.
Although I doubt Apple intended for this, I think these commercials will make parents think twice about buying their daughter an iPhone.

You picked the adverts up wrong. Which is fine, that happens, but I'd imagine very few would misunderstand it in that way. That's great for Apple, obviously.

I guess I should haul my Macbook Pro to Starbucks with me when I just wanna stop for a quick cup of coffee and make a quick video call to a friend while waiting for them to pour my drink?:

Actually, as the annoyed customer standing behind you, I'd prefer it if you used your laptop and sat in the corner, instead of standing in front of the line with your iphone 4 wasting everyone's time making cute faces at your kid.

Agreed. I'm especially looking forward to watching you coo and be all gaga while I'm sitting next to you on a long flight. Won't that be a treat

I just gotta ask...how important is a video call you gotta make one while you're waiting in line for coffee?

"Hey mate guess what I'm doing?"
"I give up."
"Getting Coffee!!!"
"FACETIIIIIIIIIIIME"

I'll pass. I love the iPhone 4, but none of these ads would compel me to buy one if I wasn't already an owner. Maybe I'm just not on the FaceTime bandwagon yet, but there's more to this phone than video calling, yet that seems to be where all of Apple's energy is being focused.

So far FaceTime has NOT been that smooth for me. Not even anywhere near that smooth. Anyone else have choppy quality?

No, mine is absolutely perfect so far!
I have used it quite a bit just to play with it because it's there, but I don't know very many people with iPhone 4. FaceTime is very cool and I can't wait until it's possible on 3G. I really like the new iPhone 4, it's great!!!

These commercials give me deuche chills!

These commercials give me deuche chills!
Like seriously, I couldn't watch them, I felt so deuchy.

These adds are cheesy, sappy, and just plain lame.

Will they work? who knows, but they are horrible.

"Cool." Not exactly why I like Facetime.

I like how the AT&T end screen says the worlds largest WIFI network. Even AT&T itself is avoiding its terrible phone network.

Well, doofus, since Facetime only works over wifi....oh, nevermind.

What's "deuche"?

Definitely a different approach than the Mac vs PC ads. Steve Jobs' near death experience definitely changed something at Apple ad made them more emotional and family oriented.

LULZ

That's amazing that you were able to dig into my psyche over my ability to recognize *****ty acting when I see it. Kudos.

Next week on FaceTime Commercials: Victor's brother's gardener's daughter reveals she's Haircut girl's long lost twin sister :p

Somebody earlier on this thread said this was a brilliant campaign for the masses, and they were right. Anyone who needs their emotions spoon-fed to them will eat this up and ask for seconds. The rest of us will see this for what it is: Manipulative, shmaltzy pap that, in spite of it's awkward writing and cardboard-cutout acting, will lead a movement that will have the uninformed believing Apple invented yet another product that they had nothing to do with. (See: Podcast.)

All you critics are missing point--AGAIN!

It doesn't matter if some of you don't buy an iPhone.

What matters is that these ads are gonna sell a LOT of iPhone 4's to a LOT of people who DO like the ads, like the product.

Apple has placed itself way out in front--AGAIN--with its Face Time.

It's going to change the world--AGAIN.
