Oh how people love to hate...the world is not enough for macrumors.

I'd rather Apple show me functionality, which they do, than tell me how it will make my life great like the Droid commercials without any real mention of what the hell the thing does.

I like how the AT&T end screen says the worlds largest WIFI network. Even AT&T itself is avoiding its terrible phone network.

Could be that facetime requires WiFi so it would not make a whole lot of sense to talk about their 3G network...Nah, that could not be it.

Ok.. so

Apple made four new great ads, but tell me this. Who here would like to find out via Facetime that you got your wife pregnant, especially if you'd been working on it for a while? I think this is precisely the kind of news that you would want to receive in person...

Somebody earlier on this thread said this was a brilliant campaign for the masses, and they were right. Anyone who needs their emotions spoon-fed to them will eat this up and ask for seconds.

Not to mention anyone who wants to use technology to see the people they are talking to.

These ads are guilty for all those charges.

But you know what? Real people are corny, kitsch and cliché, most of the precious moments plays out exactly as those clips on flims only less perfect. Be it wedding, child birth or any other sweet private times.

This is the age when people have to act to appear "real" while real expression of emotion are deemed too stereotypical thus "unbelievable". This is the age when people feel compelled to parody everything too close to heart and too sincere for reason one can only guess maybe that's because any serious notion about our earthly existence becomes a challenge to them.

You know what's becoming unbearably corny, kitsch and cliché?

Cynical, sarcasm, the urge to spoil something subtle, delicate but familiar.

Very well put, ArseneKarl: that's exactly right. Real people are like this, which is why I think the acting is spot-on. Believable. When you're watching someone on the screen and you can tell they're acting, you just can't buy into it. I really felt the emotions in both videos.

I'm an actor too, which is why I know this stuff so well. (Just not a very well paid one at the moment. Scorcese hasn't found me yet. Give him time.) :)

You make no sense. This is the type of good news that a spouse might rush to pick up the phone and tell their significant other.

That said (earlier post), I would like to add that the ads are refreshingly unApple. They actually show real people using real features. Connecting the dots for those that need dot connecting.
Maybe not so much for the niche here in these forums, but I suspect these spots will resonate well with the general public. Which is, after all, Apple's target audience. Sorry guys/gals. ;)

It's nice to know I'm not the only one with common sense!

Fring has been updated to do video chat. You should use it on 3G to understand why apple only lets you use WiFi. Apple understands that people blame the product for circumstances beyond the control of the product.

Personally I think these are wonderful ads. The acting is good. The production is excellent, no music adds to the moment. You'll also notice that there's no intro to the commercials, creating a sense of seriousness or urgency. This is very well done.

At the end of the ads, you'll notice that in three of the ads that there's a line that is said as the apple and iphone logo come up. Words like "it feels pretty great, " you like it? i do" and "beautiful" are references to the iphone, or the experience of using the iphone.

It's been mentioned that these commercials are for the masses, not Apple fans per se, I tend to agree. The average consumer doesn't give a rats ass about apple nor its products. By seeing a commercial like this, it will pique their interest, and as such, seek out more info on the product. They then visit the website and are met with a bold statement "This changes everything"

Quite epic-like commercials, bold statements, ...this is extreeeeeeeemely well done. Apple doesn't need to geek out with specs. Apple always does a great job demonstrating the value. It's all about the value proposition. They did the exact same thing with the ipad ads.

done.

At what point did our society dumb down to the point where dissenting opinions on a topic became synonymous with "hate"? Are we really at a point where people are supposed to be sheep and follow along with whatever we're spoonfed? I see nothing wrong with anyone who doesn't think that these commercials are great. It's obviously not everyone's cup of tea, so to speak.

I thought the ads were corny that and Apple could of picked a better name Face Time sounds stupid. Doesn't matter I'll never use it anyway.

Argh! What were Apple thinking!? These ads are terrible!

There are far better and less *corny* ways of promoting FaceTime... Wayyyyyy to emotional - this is actually a bit of a 'turn off' to their younger markets (16 to 26)

"Meet Her" is beautiful in just about every way. Kind of leaves you speechless.

Pricelessness is a pretty amazing feature.

i definitely think these ads will attract people to the phone.
especially those kind of people who are like "well just in case"
the same ones who buy a huge truck to hitch their boat that they plan to get and use all the time in the future. and also, the extra back seats for when they go camping all the time.
you know, just to have it. so they can technically use it for things they won't actually ever do.

but they keep doing the same kind of moments, like.
a baby?
going to college.
pretty much being there with a loved one when you are far away.
and at 'emotional' times.

they should do some more common uses, such as.
hey man, i'm at a concert. which t-shirt do you want me to get you?
what are the options?
i'll show you.
facetimeeeeeeeeeee.

I kind of agree. Of course, advertising is not the same as reality. Maybe the advertising experts know that these emotional hooks will catch people's attention and don't expect these to be practical examples.

More practically, I could see this as a way to show off something like a remodeled home, new furniture, new artwork, new project, a pet's antics and such. Yes, you could chat with a laptop but the iPhone gives you the freedom to wander around and look at all sides of something.

Another cool ad would be someone getting remote technical help for some sort of equipment. It could be something as simple as helping your mom hook up the stereo or new TV. Instead of the word games we play now you could see what they see and guide their hands.

...really?

It's shmaltzy, conservative, clean, 2-dimensional, benign, unbelievable, vanilla, aggressively mediocre commercial acting.

It's like they raided the rejects at a casting call for Days of our Lives.

Well said. Not to mention they are also emotionally restrained, hollow, with no depth or resonance with human emotion... oddly empty and creepy. FAIL.

the only thing that bugs me about facetime is the whole wi-fi thing, and i know that's been said a million times.
but you can video chat on a laptop/computer from your house,
doing it with iphone 4 is cool because it's portable. but still, if you can't do it on the go, it seems way less useful/cool.

you pretty much have to sit down and plan to facetime someone, rather than just do it. if you want to show someone something, you can't be like. oh hey, check this out. it's more like, hey man. are you in a wifi area? ok, get to one. now turn on your wifi. alright. now look at this.

First of all, it is not like this is cast in stone. Eventually this will work over 3G. You never get the whole world in version 1.0.

Second, this gives you a lot more flexibility than a laptop. With a laptop you pretty much have to sit in one place. With the iPhone you could pace around, show off different rooms, walk through a garden, show off all sides of furniture, art, projects. You could get technical advice on a mechanical device. Loads more flexible than trying to wave your laptop around.
