spoken like a true non-musician. or maybe a truly bored 21st century digital kid...

some people use it like you described. and many others don't. and music production/equipment is a multi (multi)-billion dollar industry, now being streamlined for [the much larger number of] casual musicians - who are LOVING getting into mobile music production. and people who do it on their computers are generally interested in doing it on their tablets. and $549 isn't very expensive, it's a couple days work for most professionals. and its resemblance to an iPhone is a tired talking point. and.... what else?

Might be a tired talking point, but it is still partly true. (Most musicians and DJs are rocking MacBook Pros with their setups, and running real pro tools software.)

It's brilliant marketing during the Grammys and that is all it needs to be. It was a cool compilation. Meant to get "a different segment" interested in iPad again. Not meant for all.

Yeah well I'm bored because

  • iPad development has been slow, maybe too slow. It's still not much more of a thing since the 2010 original
  • Apple alone has not been able to take advantages of iPad screen estate. Look at the music app, Notification Center, Newsstand app, app swicher. So many blank part of the screen left unused
  • Professional can go and get a $549 iPad for a couple days of regular work. Sure. But it's still a toy compared to their other tools. It's not the main tool per se. More of like a sidekick instead.
  • Twist it all you want, I do have an iPad, and I use it daily. But I was just posting my opinion about why tablet market is stagnant, which was the point of the original post.

Did not care for the commercial. While I am definitely not the target they trying to reach here, they could at least have something more interesting and for sure a better music.

well that was strange....
what the heck did I just watch and what the hell did it have to do with the iPad

Partly because it doesn't do anything much more than the original iPad? Many people still use it for book reader, watching movies, browse, social media and maybe a bit playing time for infants. That's quite narrow for a $549 device.
Making music on an iPad is niche and only a handful of people would do it. Most will do it on their laptop and computers.

In short, iPad should be way more powerful and functional than it is to make it worthwhile. Some might not be agree with me, but it's still a giant iPhone without the phone part. It's still not able to substitute a Mac or computer completely.

I've actually used it to do web development with Diet Coda. It was nice not having to take my MBA. I also use AirPreview feature of Diet Coda which allows me to see my web page while I code. Really useful when I don't have my external monitor.

While yes, most people don't use all the features of the iPad I think people don't discover what it really can do because of the way you see it. I do use it for all the things you say and more.

Also, terrible ad.

ad is alright
the music isn't

I actually like it, funk, hiphop, dub, quite a mix.

Exactly - it's sad to see an iPad associated with this pile of crap.

You can talk for yourself, plenty of people like this "noise"; even old fogeys like me. Maybe the U2 release was geared just for you. And btw, I actually bought the first U2 albums as vinyl in the early 1980s...

----------

Yes, it's "easier" for things it was designed for. Grab and use for browsing on the couch, or watching movies at lazy times. But not much more in my personal experience. It's still an electronic paper in most cases. I was hoping it replaces something (hopefully, Mac and PC) instead of adding or complicate things.

Right now I feel too many "in betweeners" on today's gadgets. From Apple alone, there are Apple Watch (supersmall), iPhone (small), iPad (not too small), and also Mac which consists of laptop (a bit large but not too large) and desktop (large but not 60" large). iPhone is getting bigger while iPad is getting, well.. nowhere.

Don't get me wrong, I have iPad and use it daily too, and yes I love it for what it is, but its development has been slow and still not as significant as an iPhone, or smartphone in particular. I have no intend or need to upgrade it as often, which is why the market is a bit stagnant (as a respond to the original post). Everybody has already got a "good enough" iPad and hesitant enough to buy a new one.

Ipads sold 20M in the last quarter. How is that nowhere? The professional market for Ipads and laptops is way way smaller than the number of Ipad Apple sells. Just look how much people are buying the Surface, not even 1M last quarter and probably half a million in Q1. Bet much more professionals use Ipads than the Surface pro, or any competitors' variant.

Lets face it. Most people don't do anything extraordinary with their computers no matter what they are. Apple products are aspirational after all; giving you the possibility of greatness even if it is never fulfilled... That's what commercials like these are all about.

----------

Apple is losing the plot. I know I sound like a "Apple is doomed" guy, but it's far from that. They're not doomed, far from it. They're lost though. First it's U2 for all, and now it's some crappy beats made in Garageband than can be passed off as music to the newest generation. They don't know what they're doing.

Software quality control has gone down like 10 pegs (figuratively at least), commercials are a joke...Apple, it's not too late.

This is ACTUALLY the sound of this generation (at least a part of it). As for software quality going down, you will have to do a lot better than just say so. Also, considering the abysmal quality of the competition, AKA Android Lollipop, Apple doesn't much to worry about.

So you think true musicians use an iPad? I can't speak for the guy you quoted, but I'd rather sound like a true "non-musician" than sound like someone pretending to be one.

People don't understand how powerful the iPad's are, especially the Air 2. The Air 2 is as powerful as a 2014 MacBook air! Did you know that?

The apps for iPad are excellent and are designed to utilize its screensize and power, so comparing to a iPhone is not all that fair. Yes it uses the same OS but guys forget how clean, fast and complex IOS is, this might shock you, but I actually think it is the best OS on the market even compared to OSX. Getting actuall work done on IOS is, fast, neat and simple and the apps for iPad have all the complex features one needs, you just have to know how to find them - (Sure it might be missing some features comparred to OSX, but there's a reason they are not there in the first place.)

Folks do not understand how simple and fast to use IOS actually is,

Agreed. Apple has too much money to fail overnight. But they're lowering the bar terribly.

You would never know unless they said they did or recognized instruments and loops from certain things. It's not like these things always end up the way they're recorded.

The real question is do you expect most singer-songwriters know how to work Pro Tools?

They payed "upwards of two million dollars" for that ad? What we're they thinking? Also, what is that terrible font they used? It just seemed very un-Apple-like.

*Goes back to listening to early Coldplay album in fear of what is considered "music" now*

They'll have paid that amount of money for the ad slot, not necessarily the advert itself.

Not a good ad.

Only one person in the world wants to do what she's doing. I can't even imagine she'd want to do whatever it is she was doing in that ad more than once.

Lots of people like playing Boggle. They'd be better off showing people playing Boggle. People like Boggle.

Yes, you are the voice of the common man, of the average Grammy viewer, of the average Apple buyer... (sic) We got that.

if apple manages to make its entire itunes library open to subscription streaming would be just wonderful.

INSTRUMeNTAL group music died years ago. Now it's all strummy "singer songwriters" dirges. Thanks mainly to Simon Cowell and ... iPads! Ironically. Let's celebrate this by making adverts to recognise the fact that true entertainment ensembles will never return. Let's thank Ed Sheeran. Jessie J. And BBCs The Voice for keeping at bay the chances of another Level 42, Kid Creole or .... In fact any band that doesn't do folk-rock/guitar template dross. Trying to explain to anyone under 30 how it was is like describing why album art was as important as the album itself. THIS sadly IS the future of "music". So enjoy the advert and shed a little tear and never look back.

C'mon people...

Hard to believe how ignorant and narrow minded so many of the posters are here, But this is the internet after all. I doubt any of you claiming the music in this ad is crap or fake could produce anything even halfway close to this level. Despite what you may think, making music on a computer or tablet does take musical talent. Feel free to go and buy logic and prove me wrong if you really believe what you say.
